  • The movement ranges and diurnal behavior of the rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) sonic tagged externally were measured by the acoustic telemetry in the marine ranching area of Tongyoung on 20 to 26 March and 4 October to 3 November, 2003. The results of study are as follows: 1. Two cage cultured fishes (body length: $30-34{\cal}cm$) were released the point where located approximately $250{\cal}m$ from the caught point on 30 March, 2003. They moved to the south $500{\cal}m$ away Sojangdudo and stayed within a $500{\cal}m$ radius of the position during the study. 2. Three wild fishes (body length: $28-32{\cal}cm$) were released around the caught point on 4 and 8 October, 2003. It was often measured that tagged fishes moved out the $500{\cal}m$ radius of released point for a week after release. After several days, the movement range tended to be reduced. Finally, they stayed within the $250{\cal}m$ radius of released point. 3. There was no significant difference of diurnal behavior of the rockfish between the cage cultured and the wild fishes. The movement range, however, for the night-time was a little wider than for the day-time.

  • The present study examined whether light emitted by long-afterglow phosphorescent pigments (LumiNova) would stimulate gonadal development in fish during the nonbreeding season. Pellets containing LumiNova powder (treatment group) were prepared and placed on the calvaria of specimens of the sapphire devil Chrysiptera cyanea, a reef-associated damselfish that requires long days for gonadal recrudescence. A pellet without LumiNova powder was placed on the calvaria of the control fish (control group). Fish were reared at $26^{\circ}C$ under a light-dark cycle (12 h photophase, 12 h scotophase; LD 12:12) for 4 weeks. No difference in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) or ovarian histology was observed among the control, sham-operation, and treatment groups 1 week after the start of the experiment. After 4 weeks, the GSI of the control and sham-operation groups remained at low levels, and ovaries contained immature oocytes at the perinucleolus stage. In contrast, the treatment group exhibited significantly higher values of GSI as well as developed ovaries with fully vitellogenic oocytes. These results demonstrated that long-day conditions were produced by light emitted from the LumiNova pellets, thus stimulating ovarian development in the damselfish. Therefore, long-afterglow phosphorescent pigments can be used as an alternative to standard light sources for purposes of artificial stimulation of gonadal development in fish.

  • The reason of the loss for the plastic sea-eel pots were estimated as crew's mistake, strong current, bad weather, rough seabed, artificial reef and other boats' fishing. Especially, pot loss happened on the fishing could make some additional catch, loss of the catches and ghost fishing because there are baits and alive fish in the lost pot. Quantity of the lost pots was estimated as 2~4 times of the ordinary usage. On the result of investigation to analyze the possibility of sustainable ghost fishing for the lost pot to feed the fishes at anytime because there were blenny, silver whiting, bar-tailed flathead and shrimp including sea-eel in the lost pot. In the bioeconomic point, ghost fishing is competitive with the general fishing. Accordingly, usage of biodegradable plastic material for the plastic sea-eel pot will be better to reduce ghost fishing

  • Species of fish such as striped beakperch, bluefin searobin and konoshiro gizzard shad are commercially very important due to their high demand in the Korean market. When estimating acoustically the abundance of stocks for these species, it is of crucial importance to know the target strength (TS) to the length dependence. In relation to these needs, the TS experiments were conducted on three different species in an acrylic salt water tank using two split-beam echo sounders of 70 and 120 kHz. The TS for these three species under the controlled condition was simultaneously measured with the swimming movement by a DVR system and analyzed as a function of fish length (L) and frequency (or wavelength $\lambda$). The equation of the form TS=a log (L)+b log ($\lambda$)+c was derived for their TS-length dependence. The best fit regression of TS on fork length for striped beakperch was estimated as TS=35.67 log (L, m) -15.67 log ($\lambda$, m) -46.69 ($r^2$=0.78). Furthermore, the best fit regression of TS on fork length for konoshiro gizzard shad was shown to be TS=25.85 log (L, m) -5.85 log ($\lambda$, m) -32.22 ($r^2$=0.51). The averaged TS for 12 bluefin searobins with a mean length of 24.36cm at 70 kHz was analyzed to be -41.55dB. In addition, the averaged tilt angle obtained simultaneously by a DVR system with TS measurements for 27 konoshiro gizzard shads swimming within an acrylic salt water tank was estimated at $-2.7^{\circ}$.

  • A large scale hydrological laboratory model tests for the geotextile tube were conducted to investigate the stability of geotextile tube and the capability of breakwater with variations of significant wave height, percentage of soil filling, and the water level above geotextile tube. The sliding displacement of geotextile tube is measured to check the stability of geotextile tube for given the various significant wane heights. The marked mash was laid out at the bottom of water channel to measure the displacement of geotextile tube. The bench mark was furnished in the upper part of water channel and the initial location was marked every 10cm interval to measure the displacement of geotextile tube. The wane transmit ratios are analyzed with the variations of soil filling of tube and of the top crown height wave above the geotextile tube in order to study the performance of brekwater before and after the installation of geotextile tube.

  • To acquire seabed information, the mosaic images of the seabed were generated using Side Scan Sonar. Short time energy function which is needed for slant range correction is proposed to get the height of Tow-Fish to the reflected acoustic amplitudes of each ping, and that leads to a mosaic image without water column. While generating mosaic image, maximum value, last value and average value are used for the measure of a pixel in the mosaic image and 3-D information was kept by using acoustic amplitudes which were heading for specific direction. As a generating method of mosaic image, low resolution mosaic image which is over 1m/pixel resolution was generated for whole survey area first, and then high resolution mosaic image which is generated under 0.1m/pixel resolution was generated for the selected area. Rocks, ripple mark, sand wave, tidal flat and artificial fish reef are found in the mosaic image.

  • A coastal marine ranching project in Uleungdo had been conducted for 5 years from 2013 to 2017 with investment costs of 5 billion won, for the special purpose of the deployment of artificial reefs, the release of young fishes. The paper focuses on an ex-post analysis of the economic feasibility for the project after completing the project, which is apart from a preliminary viability. For economic analysis, the economic benefits are derived from direct benefits including increasing effects of fisheries income and saving effects of harvesting costs, and indirect benefits including increasing effects of recreational fishing and preservation effects of coastal marine ecosystems while economic costs include releasing and purchasing costs of artificial reef and juvenile fish, R&D costs, maintenance costs and harvesting costs. The result shows that the project should not be accepted according to NPV=-0.125 billion won, IRR=4.5% and B/C ratio=0.98 under Scenario 1 which considers direct benefits and indirect benefits excluding the preservation values, while the project should be accepted under Scenario 2 indicating NPV=30.9 billion won, IRR=11.3% and B/C ratio=1.49 which considers the direct benefits as well as the indirect ones including the preservation values, based on 4.5% of the social rate of discount.

  • The purpose of this study was to improve growth and survival rate of marine microalgae and macroalga zoospores using with eco-friendly capsulation materials. The capsulation materials were chosen an alginic acid which extracted from marine brown algae combining with starch and calcium chloride. The capsulated microalgae, Nannochloropsis salina and macroalga zoospores, Ulva australis were evaluated with growth and survival rate. When the mixed ratio of alginic acid was less than 50%, capsule formation was not performed. When the ratio of 50% alginic acid and 50% starch, the microalgae was shown the highest growth and survival rate increasing up to $8.74{\times}10^5cells\;mL^{-1}$ while 100% of alginic acid was the lowest rate up to $4.92{\times}10^5cells\;mL^{-1}$. The increasing starch ratio improved to their growth and survival rate, however decreasing alginic acid make physical capsule formation weaken. By applying on a surface of artificial reef, capsulated algal zoospores were germinated 99 individuals $cm^{-2}$. This attempt will be provided to basic core technology for marine afforestation in coastal area.

  • Residual current plays more important role than the tidal current for long-term material transport in coastal areas. The main component of residual current is tide-induced residual current. Otherwise, wind driven current and buoyancy-driven current are important components which change the residual current. To clarify the characteristic of coastal current, application of a three -dimensional model is necessary. This study focuses on clarifying the stratified systems of coastal water affected by freshwater runoff from a river and analyzes the structure of current at Ulsan bay by applying a three-dimensional buoyancy-driven current model. According to the result of “Ulsan bay” study, it shows that the surface layer in semi-enclosed estuaries, which affected by freshwater runoff. has flows going out, and the bottom layer has flows coming in. Besides when the wind blows toward inside of the bay, the surface layer has flows coming in and the bottom layer has flows going out as compensation flows for the surface circulation. The results of simulation could be applicable to examine vertical upwelling, which might be caused by construction of artificial fishing reef to build aqua farm, submerged breakwater to control coastal sediment, and the formulation of oceanic ridge, or a basic study on application to the usage of deep water.

  • The main purpose of this study is to provide an objective evaluation standard for the assessment of marine spatial characteristics via Ulsan floating offshore wind power project using HEA.. Various levels of damage occur in the waters (5,017.6) near the floating offshore wind power terminals in Ulsan, including commercial damage, ecological destruction and reduction in quality of life due to seascape damage. Alternative restoration projects for calculating the economic value of damage were selected including artificial reef projects and estimates based on HEA. For basic households with a 4.5% social discount rate and a 100% maturity index over four years, the damage was approximately 457 hundred million won. The HEA in this study resolves the possible irrationality in the evaluation of marine spatial characteristics, since the value is calculated based on objective and clear DATA. Therefore, the study results are intended to facilitate conflict resolution between stakeholders in the future during the implementation of the marine spatial plan.
