Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are successfully developed for the modeling and prediction of normalized polarity parameter (ETN) of 216 various solvents with diverse chemical structures using a quantitative-structure property relationship. ANN with architecture 5-9-1 is generated using five molecular descriptors appearing in the multi-parameter linear regression (MLR) model. The most positive charge of a hydrogen atom (q+), total charge in molecule (qt), molecular volume of solvent (Vm), dipole moment (μ) and polarizability term (πI) are input descriptors and its output is ETN. It is found that properly selected and trained neural network with 192 solvents could fairly represent the dependence of normalized polarity parameter on molecular descriptors. For evaluation of the predictive power of the generated ANN, an optimized network is applied for prediction of the ETN values of 24 solvents in the prediction set, which are not used in the optimization procedure. Correlation coefficient (R) and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.903 and 0.0887 for prediction set by MLR model should be compared with the values of 0.985 and 0.0375 by ANN model. These improvements are due to the fact that the ETN of solvents shows non-linear correlations with the molecular descriptors.

The purpose of this paper is to develop a model for forecasting early design construction cost of building projects using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Eighty questionnaires distributed among construction organizations were utilized to identify significant parameters for the building project costs. 169 case studies of building projects were collected from the construction industry in Gaza Strip. The case studies were used to develop ANN model. Eleven significant parameters were considered as independent input variables affected on "project cost". The neural network model reasonably succeeded in estimating building projects cost without the need for more detailed drawings. The average percentage error of tested dataset for the adapted model was largely acceptable (less than 6%). Sensitivity analysis showed that the area of typical floor and number of floors are the most influential parameters in building cost.

Training neural networks is a complex task with great importance in the field of supervised learning. In the training process, a set of input-output patterns is repeated to an artificial neural network (ANN). From those patterns weights of all the interconnections between neurons are adjusted until the specified input yields the desired output. In this paper, a new hybrid algorithm is proposed for global optimization of connection weights in an ANN. Dynamic swarms are shown to converge rapidly during the initial stages of a global search, but around the global optimum, the search process becomes very slow. In contrast, the gradient descent method can achieve faster convergence speed around the global optimum, and at the same time, the convergence accuracy can be relatively high. Therefore, the proposed hybrid algorithm combines the dynamic particle swarm optimization (DPSO) algorithm with the backpropagation (BP) algorithm, also referred to as the DPSO-BP algorithm, to train the weights of an ANN. In this paper, we intend to show the superiority (time performance and quality of solution) of the proposed hybrid algorithm (DPSO-BP) over other more standard algorithms in neural network training. The algorithms are compared using two different datasets, and the results are simulated.
Safety service improvement and development of efficient maintenance strategies for corroded steel structures are undeniably essential. Therefore, understanding the influence of damage caused by corrosion on the remaining load-carrying capacities such as tensile strength is required. In this study, artificial neural network (ANN) approach is proposed in order to produce a simple, accurate, and inexpensive method developed by using tensile test results, material properties and finite element method (FEM) results to train the ANN model. Initially in reproducing corroded model process, FEM was used to obtain tensile strength of artificial corroded plates, for which surface is developed by a spatial autocorrelation model. By using the corroded surface data and material properties as input data, with tensile strength as the output data, the ANN model could be trained. The accuracy of the ANN result was then verified by using leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV). As a result, it was confirmed that the accuracy of the ANN approach and the final output equation was developed for predicting tensile strength without tensile test results and FEM in further work. Though previous studies have been conducted, the accuracy results are still lower than the proposed ANN approach. Hence, the proposed ANN model now enables us to have a simple, rapid, and inexpensive method to predict residual tensile strength more accurately due to corrosion in steel structures.

The conventional approximate optimization method, which uses the statistical design of experiments(DOE) and response surface method(RSM), can derive an approximated optimum results through the iterative process by a trial and error. The quality of results depends seriously on the factors and levels assigned by a designer. The purpose of this study is to propose a new technique, which is called a sequential design of experiments(SDOE), to reduce a trial and error procedure and to find an appropriate condition for using artificial neural network(ANN) systematically. An appropriate condition is determined from the iterative process based on the analysis of means. With this new technique and ANN, it is possible to find an optimum design accurately and efficiently. The suggested algorithm has been applied to various mathematical examples and a structural problem.

In this paper, we intended to present a model for estimating carbon dioxide emissions by work of construction equipment using Artificial Neural Network(ANN) analysis. In this study, data of excavators and trucks are classified according to the work carried out, and carbon dioxide emissions are predicted through ANN based on equipment information and work information. As a result, the effect of each model was validated, and a carbon dioxide emission prediction model was derived for each work. This has the expected effect of establishig an eco-friendly process plan using this model from the construction planning stage.

In this paper, we propose optimal route searching algorithm using ANN(Artificial Neural Network) and implement route searching system. Our proposed scheme shows that the route using artificial neural network is almost same as the route using Dijkstra's algorithm but the time in our propose algorithm is shorter than that of existing Dijkstra's algorithm. Proposed route searching method using artificial neural network has better performance than exiting route searching method because it use several weight value in making different routes. Through simulation, we show that our proposed routing system improves the performance and reduces time to make route irrespective of the number of hidden layers.
Manufacturers and retailers are interested in how prices, promotions, discounts and other marketing variables can influence the sales and shares of the products that they produce or sell. Therefore, many models have been developed to predict the brand share. Since the customer choice models are usually used to predict the market share, here we use hybrid model of Probabilistic Neural Network and Artificial Bee colony Algorithm (PNN-ABC) that we have introduced to model consumer choice to predict brand share. The evaluation process is carried out using the same data set that we have used for modeling individual consumer choices in a retail coffee market. Then, to show good performance of this model we compare it with Artificial Neural Network with one hidden layer, Artificial Neural Network with two hidden layer, Artificial Neural Network trained with genetic algorithms (ANN-GA), and Probabilistic Neural Network. The evaluated results show that the offered model is outperforms better than other previous models, so it can be use as an effective tool for modeling consumer choice and predicting market share.
A bridge transportation network supplies products from various source nodes to destination nodes through bridge structures in a target region. However, recent frequent earthquakes have caused damage to bridge structures, resulting in extreme direct damage to the target area as well as indirect damage to other lifeline structures. Therefore, in this study, a surrogate model-based comprehensive framework to estimate the seismic resilience of bridge transportation networks is proposed. For this purpose, total system travel time (TSTT) is introduced for accurate performance indicator of the bridge transportation network, and an artificial neural network (ANN)-based surrogate model is constructed to reduce traffic analysis time for high-dimensional TSTT computation. The proposed framework includes procedures for constructing an ANN-based surrogate model to accelerate network performance computation, as well as conventional procedures such as direct Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) calculation and bridge restoration calculation. To demonstrate the proposed framework, Pohang bridge transportation network is reconstructed based on geographic information system (GIS) data, and an ANN model is constructed with the damage states of the transportation network and TSTT using the representative earthquake epicenter in the target area. For obtaining the seismic resilience curve of the Pohang region, five epicenters are considered, with earthquake magnitudes 6.0 to 8.0, and the direct and indirect damages of the bridge transportation network are evaluated. Thus, it is concluded that the proposed surrogate model-based framework can efficiently evaluate the seismic resilience of a high-dimensional bridge transportation network, and also it can be used for decision-making to minimize damage.

Considering that earlier stage of construction project has a great influence on the possibility of lowering of environmental load, it is important to build and utilize system that can support effective decision making at the initial stage of the project. In this study, we constructed an environmental load estimation model that can be used at the early stage of the project using basic design factors. The model was constructed by using the artificial neural network to estimate environmental load by applying to planning stage (ANN-1), basic design stage (ANN-2). The result of test, shows that average of absolute measuring efficiency and standard deviation of ANN-1 and ANN-2 were 11.19% / 5.30% and 9.59% / 3.09% each. This result indicates that the model using the input variables extended with the project progress has high reliability and it is considered to be effective in decision support at the initial design stage of the project.
