  • Human activities are often affected by weather conditions. Automatic weather recognition is meaningful to traffic alerting, driving assistance, and intelligent traffic. With the boost of deep learning and AI, deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) are utilized to identify weather situations. In this paper, a three-channel convolutional neural network (3C-CNN) model is proposed on the basis of ResNet50.The model extracts global weather features from the whole image through the ResNet50 branch, and extracts the sky and ground features from the top and bottom regions by two CNN5 branches. Then the global features and the local features are merged by the Concat function. Finally, the weather image is classified by Softmax classifier and the identification result is output. In addition, a medium-scale dataset containing 6,185 outdoor weather images named WeatherDataset-6 is established. 3C-CNN is used to train and test both on the Two-class Weather Images and WeatherDataset-6. The experimental results show that 3C-CNN achieves best on both datasets, with the average recognition accuracy up to 94.35% and 95.81% respectively, which is superior to other classic convolutional neural networks such as AlexNet, VGG16, and ResNet50. It is prospected that our method can also work well for images taken at night with further improvement.

  • Recently, with the development of data processing technology and the increase of computational power, methods to solving social problems using Artificial Intelligence (AI) are in the spotlight, and AI technologies are replacing and supplementing existing traditional methods in various fields. Meanwhile in Korea, heavy rain is one of the representative factors of natural disasters that cause enormous economic damage and casualties every year. Accurate prediction of heavy rainfall over the Korean peninsula is very difficult due to its geographical features, located between the Eurasian continent and the Pacific Ocean at mid-latitude, and the influence of the summer monsoon. In order to deal with such problems, the Korea Meteorological Administration operates various state-of-the-art observation equipment and a newly developed global atmospheric model system. Nevertheless, for precipitation nowcasting, the use of a separate system based on the extrapolation method is required due to the intrinsic characteristics associated with the operation of numerical weather prediction models. The predictability of existing precipitation nowcasting is reliable in the early stage of forecasting but decreases sharply as forecast lead time increases. At this point, AI technologies to deal with spatio-temporal features of data are expected to greatly contribute to overcoming the limitations of existing precipitation nowcasting systems. Thus, in this project the dataset required to develop, train, and verify deep learning-based precipitation nowcasting models has been constructed in a regularized form. The dataset not only provides various variables obtained from multiple sources, but also coincides with each other in spatio-temporal specifications.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the performance of transfer learning in a deep convolutional neural network for classifying implant fixtures. Materials and Methods: Periapical radiographs of implant fixtures obtained using the Superline (Dentium Co. Ltd., Seoul, Korea), TS III(Osstem Implant Co. Ltd., Seoul, Korea), and Bone Level Implant(Institut Straumann AG, Basel, Switzerland) systems were selected from patients who underwent dental implant treatment. All 355 implant fixtures comprised the total dataset and were annotated with the name of the system. The total dataset was split into a training dataset and a test dataset at a ratio of 8 to 2, respectively. YOLOv3 (You Only Look Once version 3, available at https://pjreddie.com/darknet/yolo/), a deep convolutional neural network that has been pretrained with a large image dataset of objects, was used to train the model to classify fixtures in periapical images, in a process called transfer learning. This network was trained with the training dataset for 100, 200, and 300 epochs. Using the test dataset, the performance of the network was evaluated in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. Results: When YOLOv3 was trained for 200 epochs, the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and confidence score were the highest for all systems, with overall results of 94.4%, 97.9%, 96.7%, and 0.75, respectively. The network showed the best performance in classifying Bone Level Implant fixtures, with 100.0% sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. Conclusion: Through transfer learning, high performance could be achieved with YOLOv3, even using a small amount of data.

  • Most of the existing machine reading research has used Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithms as networks. Among them, RNN was slow in training, and Question Answering Network (QANet) was announced to improve training speed. QANet is a model composed of CNN and self-attention. CNN extracts semantic and syntactic information well from the local corpus, but there is a limit to extracting the corresponding information from the global corpus. Graph Convolutional Networks (GCN) extracts semantic and syntactic information relatively well from the global corpus. In this paper, to take advantage of this strength of GCN, we propose I-QANet, which changed the CNN of QANet to GCN. The proposed model performed 1.2 times faster than the baseline in the Stanford Question Answering Dataset (SQuAD) dataset and showed 0.2% higher performance in Exact Match (EM) and 0.7% higher in F1. Furthermore, in the Korean Question Answering Dataset (KorQuAD) dataset consisting only of Korean, the learning time was 1.1 times faster than the baseline, and the EM and F1 performance were also 0.9% and 0.7% higher, respectively.

  • The military is facing a continuous decrease in personnel, and in order to cope with potential accidents and challenges in operations, efforts are being made to reduce the direct involvement of personnel by utilizing the latest technologies. Recently, the use of various sensors related to Manned-Unmanned Teaming and artificial intelligence technologies has gained attention, emphasizing the need for flexible utilization methods. In this paper, we propose four dataset construction methods that can be used for effective training of robots that can be deployed in military operations, utilizing not only RGB image data but also data acquired from IR image sensors. Since there is no publicly available dataset that combines RGB and IR image data, we directly acquired the dataset within buildings. The input values were constructed by combining RGB and IR image sensor data, taking into account the field of view, resolution, and channel values of both sensors. We compared the proposed method with conventional RGB image data classification training using the same learning model. By employing the proposed image data fusion method, we observed improved stability in training loss and approximately 3% higher accuracy.

  • Pain is an unpleasant experience for the patient. The recognition and assessment of pain help tailor the treatment to the patient, and they are also challenging in the medical. In this paper, we propose an approach for pain recognition through a deep neural network applied to pre-processed physiological. The proposed approach applies the idea of shortcut connections to concatenate the spatial information of a convolutional neural network and the temporal information of a recurrent neural network. In addition, our proposed approach applies the attention mechanism and achieves competitive performance on the BioVid Heat Pain dataset.
