  • This article discusses the vascular change of dorsal surface of tongue following inferior alveolar nerve block of 2% lidocaine HCl with 1:100,000 epinephrine. Twenty-two rats were randomly allocated to three groups: control group; without mandibular nerve block, experimental group 1; 2% lidocaine HCl, experimental group 2; 2% lidocaine HCl plus 1:100,000 epinephrine. The assessments were performed at 1-, 5-, 30-, 60-, 120-minute after inferior alveolar nerve block. Vessel diameters using the micrometer were measured and compared. Results showed that the increase in vascular constriction in group 3 was greater than those in groups 1 and 2. In conclusion, local anesthesia combined with epinephrine assures safer anesthesia for hemostasis.

  • This article examines the role of children in the modern era of globalization. The twentieth century sets the tone of viewing children as independent human beings, holding inherent and universal rights. Children are no longer viewed as immature beings in need of charity care, but rather ones with evolving capacities. Several important international movements are discussed : (1) The Convention on the Rights of the Child; (2) World Summit for Children; and (3) the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children. Trends in the current issues ranging over children as active citizens of the global world are provided, including poverty, violence, and climate change.

  • This article reports the drag reduction phenomenon of aqueous suspensions containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) flowing through horizontal tubes. Stable nanofluids were prepared by using a surfactant. It is found that the drag forces of CNT nanofluids were reduced at specific flow conditions compared to the base fluid. It is found that the friction factor of CNT nanofluids was reduced up to approximately 30 % by using CNT nanofluids. Increased kinematic viscosities of CNT nanofluids are suggested to the key factors that cause the drag reduction phenomenon. In addition, transition from laminar to turbulent flow is observed to be delayed when CNT nanofluids flow in a horizontal tube, meaning that drag reduction occurs at higher flow rates, that is, at higher Reynolds numbers.

이에 KISTI(한국과학기술정보연구원)는 국가차원의 학회 정보화 사업의 일환으로 학회정보 유통 체제 전 과정을 온라인화하고 쉽게 관리할 수 있도록 한 $\boxDr$KISTI-ACOMS(KISTI -Article COntribution Management System: KISTI- 학회논문투고관리시스템)$\boxUl$을 개발하여 2001 년부터 학회에 무상으로 보급하여 왔다.

  • To support speech information technology industry it is vital to create and distribute standardized speech corpora to be used for the development of products and technologies. In this article we introduce speech corpora created by Speech Information Technology & Industry Promotion Center(SiTEC) during its 1st and 2nd fiscal years (2001/5/1-2003/4/30) and plans for those corpora which is being created currently or will be created in near future. We introduce the corpus for car application to expand speech information technology to the field of traditional industry, the corpora for foreign languages to support exportation, the corpus for basic research for the sake of application in the industry, the corpora for common use, and others.

  • Despite of the rich literature in discriminant analysis, this complicated subject remains much to be explored. In this article, we study the theoretical foundation that supports Fisher's linear discriminant analysis (LDA) by setting up the classification problem under the dimension reduction framework as in Li(1991) for introducing sliced inverse regression(SIR). Through the connection between SIR and LDA, our theory helps identify sources of strength and weakness in using CRIMCOORDS(Gnanadesikan 1977) as a graphical tool for displaying group separation patterns. This connection also leads to several ways of generalizing LDA for better exploration and exploitation of nonlinear data patterns.

  • In this article, a new remote sensing image fusion model based on modified Kohonen networks is given. And a new fusion rule based on modified voting rule was established. Select Shaoxing City as the study site, located at Zhejiang Province, P.R.China. The fusion experiment between Landsat TM data (30m) and IRS-C Pan data (5.8m) was performed using the given fusion method. The fusion results show that the new method can gain better result in apply ing to the lower hill area, and the whole classification accuracy was 10% higher than the basic Kohonen method. The confusion between the woodlands and the waterbodies was also diminished.

  • Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) is a management and technical process whereby all the diverse elements needed to fully operate, maintain, and totally support a materiel system in the field are identified, developed, and deployed simultaneously and on an equal priority with the item of materiel being supported. The test and evaluation (T&E)of ILS act the important role of reduction of life-cycle cost and keeping of good performance for weapon system. In this article, we suggest the alternatives for improvement in the test and evaluation of ILS during weapon system acquisition. It is hoped that this research is valuable and beneficial to persons related weapon system acquisition, in order to maximize the efficiency of defense acquisition management by reducing the life-cycle cost and enhancing the quality of weapon system.

  • Generally, the posterolateral approach had been recommended in case of extraforaminal disc herniation or lateral stenosis but it has been speculated that this procedure may be feasible to posterolateral disc herniation at the high lumbar levels of the L1-L2 interspace. Topographically, a posterolateral approach should be able to access anteromedial side of the spinal canal without the risk of the bony instability and damage to the neural structures. During the past one year period, three patients with high lumbar discs at the L1-L2 level were treated by the modified posterolateral approach. This article describeds the details of this approach with pertinent literature review.
