  • Background: Tuberculosis (TB) causes substantial health burden to the Korean military. This study aims to assess the impact of infectious TB cases on close and casual contacts in the Korean Army settings based on contact investigation data. Methods: Six Army units with infectious TB cases from September 2012 to May 2013 were enrolled in the study. We analyzed the clinical data from close and casual contacts screened using the tuberculin skin test (TST) and QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube to identify latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) cases. For the control group, 286 military conscripts with no reported TB exposure were tested by TST only. Results: Of the 667 contacts of index cases, LTBI cases identified were as follows: 21.8% of close contacts of smearpositive cases (71/326), 8.5% of casual contacts of smear-positive cases (26/305), and 2.8% of close contacts of smearnegative cases (1/36). In the control group, 16.8% showed positivity in TST. In a multivariate analysis, having stayed in the same room or next room with TB patients was identified as a risk factor of LTBI. Conclusion: Using the data from TB contact investigations in the Korean Army units, we found an overall LTBI rate of 14.7% among the contacts screened. This study demonstrates that contacts living in the same building, especially the same room or next room, with TB patients are at a high risk of acquiring LTBI, serving as additional evidence for defining close and casual contacts of a TB patient with regard to Army barrack settings.

  • US Army Found Five Lessons For the Urban Operations After Implemented Offensive Operations in Mosul, Iraq for the First time in the 21st Century. Based on these lessons the US Army Adds Spur Preparing For Future Megacity Operations Such as Weapon System, Warfighting Concept, Structure and etc. Korean peninsula experiences rapid Urbanization, so the Megacities are also Expected to Increase by this trend. So the ROK army also need to Benchmark the US Counterpart, so that the Organization needs to prepare following Elements. First, Establishing Collective Intelligence Platform for uture Megacity ops. Second, force Builing Optimized for the Megacity Operations(Warfighting Concept, Weapon System, Structures), Lastly, Establishing Megacity Synthetic Training field. By Preparing so, ROKA can Assure its Success in Future Warfare.

  • This study examined the reality of military counseling education applied by the Army and studied the effects of military counseling training using virtual reality. First, we explored the cases of virtual reality application related to counseling, reviewed the virtual reality technology that can be benchmarked in the Army military counseling education, and examined the applicable technology. We classified the education method and the curriculum for the students and tested the difference using the analysis of variance, which is a statistical analysis method, through the satisfaction measurement of the current education. In addition, after having students experience virtual reality contents, the effects of practical training applied with virtual reality technology were derived and the difference in actual training was compared and analyzed through T-test. Then, the reliability of the study was improved by analyzing the effects of practical training using virtual reality by using the Analytic Hierarchy Process for the expert group who can consider the overall situation. Based on the results of the analysis, the development plan of military counseling training combined with virtual reality technology and the supplements of current military counseling education were presented as policy implications.

  • Sparse unmixing has been proven to be an effective method for hyperspectral unmixing. Hyperspectral images contain rich spectral and spatial information. The means to make full use of spectral information, spatial information, and enhanced sparsity constraints are the main research directions to improve the accuracy of sparse unmixing. However, many algorithms only focus on one or two of these factors, because it is difficult to construct an unmixing model that considers all three factors. To address this issue, a novel algorithm called multiview-based spectral weighted and low-rank row-sparsity unmixing is proposed. A multiview data set is generated through spectral partitioning, and then spectral weighting is imposed on it to exploit the abundant spectral information. The row-sparsity approach, which controls the sparsity by the l2,0 norm, outperforms the single-sparsity approach in many scenarios. Many algorithms use convex relaxation methods to solve the l2,0 norm to avoid the NP-hard problem, but this will reduce sparsity and unmixing accuracy. In this paper, a row-hard-threshold function is introduced to solve the l2,0 norm directly, which guarantees the sparsity of the results. The high spatial correlation of hyperspectral images is associated with low column rank; therefore, the low-rank constraint is adopted to utilize spatial information. Experiments with simulated and real data prove that the proposed algorithm can obtain better unmixing results.

  • This study presents the direction of the Republic of Korea Army in the future by examining the Manned and Unmanned Teaming(MUMT) Systems of the Military Advanced Countries of the United States, Israel, and France. In this study, the current status of the U.S. Ground Forces' 'Squad-X' program, the Israeli Ground Forces' Digital Army Program (DAP), and the French Army's Scorpion program were examined. Next, it was followed by a discussion of The Combat concept, a way of fighting in the future battlefield, with the development trend of a complex Combat system with various weapon systems supporting it. Finally, based on this, the direction of the development of MUMT system, which the Republic of Korea Army should engage in in the future, was presented as a conclusion. Since such MUMT system of advanced military forces are being developed in a secret manner, continuous longitudinal research needs be conducted.

  • We have developed new algorithms for solution of the three-dimensional, time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations that utilize massively parallel supercomputing implemented on the Connection Machine 5. Here, we apply these techniques to analyze he fluid flows that occur during the growth of the tow nonlinear optical crystals-potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP), which is producted in a novel rapid growth system under development by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Laser Division, and Potassium titanyl phosphate(KTP), which is grown from a high-temperature aqueous solution.

  • Here represents a case of aneurysmal bone cyst which is very rare non neoplastic bone tumor especially in rib. The aneurysmal bone cyst usually arises from long bones of the upper and lower extemities and tt-e spine, which together account for 60 to 70 per cent of cases. In this case the tumor is found in right ninth rib on routine chest X-ray. It is resected successfully and the result is excellent.

  • The military vehicles are an inevitable resource that is indispensible to successfully perform modern wars. Military vehicles used in the Korean Army are the copycats of American out-dated military vehicles, but limited to fulfill the specific requirements by the operators. Korean army are nowadays trying to launch a new developmental plan for military vehicles of new concepts by the Korean Army. This article, hence, extracts the necessary factors upon the advancement of military vehicles by the expertises with the operation of military vehicles as well as sufficient experiences about maintenance. Suggesting and setting up the priority, the result makes practical application for the decision of the development of military vehicles.

  • The army developed the ATCIS(Army Tactical Command Information System) for the battlefield information system with share the command control information through the realtime. The using the public key and the encryption equipment in the ATCIS is enough to the confidentiality, integrity. But, it is vulnerable about the availability with the zero day attack. In this paper, we implement the worm propagation simulation on the ATCIS infrastructure through the modelling on the ATCIS operation environment. We propose the countermeasures based on the results from the simulation.
