  • In 1997, Lavagnino defined four stages of technology trends in libraries; but, he left a question about the fifth stage. Based on literature review, the following; Web technology, open source application, library consortia, digitization, wireless, and social media are the main trends in the fifth stage. Analyzing the job advertisements (ads) dating from 2006 to 2010 in systems librarianship, the analysis showed that there are three patterns. The first pattern is that the title of 'system librarian' is no longer specific to managing only the ILS at many libraries. The second pattern - network management skills - is not highly required in the job ads. And the last pattern - especially academic institutions which have archive or special collection departments - was looking for a systems librarian. In addition, Web technology has evolved as the most required skill according to the advertisements, as well as inter-personal skills in a team environment.

  • Tiered wireless sensor network is a network model of flexibility and robustness, which consists of the traditional resource-limited sensor nodes and the resource-abundant storage nodes. In such architecture, collected data from the sensor nodes are periodically submitted to the nearby storage nodes for archive purpose. When a query is requested, storage nodes also process the query and return qualified data as the result to the base station. The role of the storage nodes leads to an attack prone situation and leaves them more vulnerable in a hostile environment. If any of them is compromised, fake data may be injected into and/or qualified data may be discarded. And the base station would receive incorrect answers incurring malfunction to applications. In this paper, an efficient verifiable top-k query processing scheme called EVTQ is proposed, which is capable of verifying the authentication and completeness of the results. Collected data items with the embedded information of ordering and adjacent relationship through a hashed message authentication coding function, which serves as a validation code, are submitted from the sensor nodes to the storage nodes. Any injected or incomplete data in the returned result from a corresponded storage node is detected by the validation code at the base station. For saving communication cost, two optimized solutions that fuse and compress validation codes are presented. Experiments on communication cost show the proposed method is more efficiency than previous works.

  • Recently internal information leakage in industries is severely increasing in spite of industry security policy. Thus, it is essential to prepare an information leakage prevention measure by industries. Most of the leaks result from the insiders, not from external attacks. In this paper, a real-time internal information leakage prevention system via both storage and network is implemented in order to protect confidential file leakage. In addition, a Hadoop-based user behavior analysis and statistics system is designed and implemented for storing and analyzing information log data in industries. The proposed system stores a large volume of data in HDFS and improves data processing capability using RHive, consequently helps the administrator recognize and prepare the confidential file leak trials. The implemented audit system would be contributed to reducing the damage caused by leakage of confidential files inside of the industries via both portable data media and networks.

  • Rhetorical relations between two text fragments are essential information and support natural language processing applications such as Question - Answering (QA) system and automatic text summarization to produce an effective outcome. Question - Answering (QA) system facilitates users to retrieve a meaningful response. There is a demand for rhetorical relation based datasets to develop such a system to interpret and respond to user requests. There are a limited number of datasets for developing an Arabic QA system. Thus, there is a lack of an effective QA system in the Arabic language. Recent research works reveal that unsupervised learning can support the QA system to reply to users queries. In this study, researchers intend to develop a rhetorical relation based dataset for implementing unsupervised learning applications. A web crawler is developed to crawl Arabic content from the web. A discourse-annotated corpus is generated using the rhetorical structural theory. A Naïve Bayes based QA system is developed to evaluate the performance of datasets. The outcome shows that the performance of the QA system is improved with proposed dataset and able to answer user queries with an appropriate response. In addition, the results on fine-grained and coarse-grained relations reveal that the dataset is highly reliable.

  • The purpose of the study is to explore the strategies to build participatory digital archives for documenting localities. Following the introduction of the chapter one, the chapter two deals with categorizing participation types of persons and organizations for documenting localities, analysing characteristics and benefits of each type, and listing up the requirements of participatory archives based on literature reviews. The chapter three focuses on the analyses of digital archives especially based on the participation of organizations such as collecting institutions and community archives in USA, Canada and UK. The cases of participatory archives are divided into two types; i) digital archives based on archival collections of institutions such as libraries, archives, and museums, ii) digital archives mainly based on various community archives. Online Archives California(OAC) and Calisphere of University of California, MemoryBC of British Columbia of Canada, and People's Collection Wales of UK as the first type cases, and Connecting Histories of Birmingham, 'Community Archives Wales(CAW), Cambridgeshire Community Archive Network(CCAN), Norfolk Community Archives Network(NORCAN) as the second type cases are selected for comparative analyses. All these cases can be considered as archival portals since they cover collections from various organizations. This study then evaluates how these digital archives fulfill the requirements of participatory archives such as : i) integrated search of archives that are to be distributed, ii) participation of individuals and organizations, and iii) providing broader contextual information and representation of context as well as contents of archives. Lastly the final chapter suggests the implications for building participatory archives in Korean local areas based on following aspects : host organizations and implementation strategy, networks of collection institutions and community archives, preserving and reorganizing contextual information, selection and appraisal, and participation of records users and creators.

  • It is time to prepare for the imminent development from the field of records management through decentralization to the records management of the new age in accordance with the flow of decentralization. To overcome a centralized record management system, more archives should be established to realize autonomous and decentralized records management. In accordance with the shift to a full-scale electronic record management environment, the appropriateness and effectiveness of the three-phase system of processing-archival-permanent record management based on physical transfer should be reviewed in terms of transfer cost and work efficiency. The archives should function as institutional archives to carry out the continuous volume record management and the autonomous record management at the institution level. This study examined the possibilities and implications of the archives to expand their functions as archives of institutions for the decentralization of record management and information governance orientation. In addition, the study diversified the types of records management institutions as a way to accomplish this and determined a way to design the functions of archives that integrate the current-end-end-end records management. At each level, institutions should set up archives based on their circumstances and aim at information governance at the level of each archive. Moreover, each archive level should establish a horizontal network to govern record information management.

  • The e-CALLISTO is a global network of frequency-agile solar radio spectrometers that was constructed in a collaboration between Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) and local host institutes. It is intended to monitor solar radio bursts 24 hours a day in frequency range between 45 MHz and 870 MHz. One of e-CALLISTO spectrometer was installed at Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) in 2007 October. The spectrometer gets signals from a horizontally polarized log-periodic antenna mounted on an automatic Sun-tracking system. Tracking status and data are monitored in Space Weather Monitoring Laboratory (SWML) of KASI in real time, and flare time data are transferred to ETH Zurich data archive daily. Using this spectrometer we obtained a couple of type II solar radio bursts on 2007 December 31, and found that these bursts are associated with a CME which occurred on the east limb.

  • For more than a decade, NEA (Near-Earth Asteroid) survey teams equipped with 1 meter-class telescopes discovered thousands of NEAs in the northern sky. As of August 2011, some 8,200 NEAs have been cataloged, yet only five percent of them has been investigated for their physical and chemical properties. In order to improve current situation, we propose a deep ecliptic survey utilizing KMTNet, for detection and characterization of NEAs in the southern sky. Thanks to the wide-field capability (four square degrees) of the telescopes, we will be able to considerably expand the search volume carrying out precision photometry down to 21.5th magnitude. We plan to focus our survey on opposition and two "sweet spots" in the ecliptic belt. Since SDSS colors characterize mineralogical properties of NEAs, g', r', i', z' filters will be employed. Based on the round-the-clock observation, we will study their rotational properties; for multiple systems, mass, density and other physical parameters can be obtained. We plan to maintain a dedicated database of the physical and mineralogical properties of NEAs. With this archive, it is expected that our understanding on the population will see a drastic change. We also plan to participate in the GAIA Follow-Up Network for ground based observation of the Solar System Objects (GAIA-FUN-SSO). The follow- up astrometry will be performed upon alerts issued by the GAIA-FUN-SSO Central Node in France.
