  • The influence of deficient(7${\mu}M$) and suffcient(1000${\mu}M$) magnesium(Mg) supply on the content of mg, chlorophyll, protein and the activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD), scavengers of superoxide radical($O_2$), and ascorbate peroxidase(AP), $H_2O_2$scavenging enzyme, and glutathione redutase(GR) were studied in pumpkin(Cudurbita moscata $D_{UCHESNE}$) plants over a 11-day period. Over the 11 days Period of growth in nutrient solution with sufficient and deficient Mg supply, the contents of Mg, chlorophyll protein and the activities of the antioxidative enzymes remained more or less constant in Mg-sufficient leaves. In Mg-deficient leaves, the contents of Mg, chlorophyll and protein was seriously decreased with time, however the activities of SOD, AP and GR highly enhanced compared to those of Mg-sufficient. The results indicated the stimulative effect of Mg deficiency on toxic oxygen species and scavenging enzymes in plants.

  • This study was performed to determine the effects of silicon on zoysiagrass after the application of drought stress. The daily amount of water or scilicon solution was 150 ml per a pot. For 14 days, plants were treated with 0.1 and 1.0 mM silicon (Si) and with distilled water for control and the drought only-treatment. Afterward, the plants in Si and drought treatment were exposed to a 21-day under drought stress condition but the plants in control received water. The results indicated that the growth and the moisture and chlorophyll contents decreased in the drought only-treatment and 0.1 mM Si compared to the control. However, 1.0 mM Si showed an increase in the growth with a significant increase of water and chlorophyll contents. The MDA and $H_2O_2$ concentrations and electrolyte leakage decreased, while the radical scavenging capacity increased in 1.0 mM Si. 1.0 mM Si showed little to no differences in the growth and no differences in water and chlorophyll contents, electrolyte leakage, MDA and $H_2O_2$ concentrations and antioxidant capacity compared to the control. These results suggested that application of silicon is useful for drought tolerance improvement of zoysiagrass under drought that is occurring in turf fields.

  • Field and greenhouse trials were conducted to evaluate application variables including spray volume, surfactant, and simulated rain affecting phytotoxicity of glyphosate for enhancing efficacy of postemergence herbicides. Glyphosate phytotoxicity was increased by addition of surfactants, L-77 and Triton CS-7 to glyphosate solution in Artmesia princeps and Equisetum arvense and addition of Triton CS-7 to glyphosate solution enhanced control of Trifoliurn repens. Simulated rain within 4 or 8 hours after glyphosate application reduced glyphosate phytotoxicity. However, addition of L-77 and Triton CS-7 to glyphosate solution increased glyphosate phytotoxicity reduced by simulated rain in Artmesia princeps and Trifolium repens.

  • Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is a member of family Asteraceae that grows all over the Korea. Recently, dandelion was cultivated for medicinal crops because of its positive medicinal effects. However, dandelion is considered as a troublesome weed in grass lawns of golf course and orchards. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of plant growth regulators [gibberellins ($GA_3$); kinetin; salicylic acid (SA); ethephon)] with different concentration on seed germination control of dandelion. Seed germination rates were increased in all concentration of $GA_3$ and kinetin treatment compared to control. In the 0.5 mM of ethephon application, seed germination rate was more increased than that of control while seed germination rate was reduced in 1.0 and 1.5 mM of ethephon treatments. Seed germination rate was significantly decreased with different SA dilutions compared to control. The germination rate was more reduced when SA was applied in combination with $GA_3$ than only SA treatments.

  • Research was initiated to evaluate cool-season grass (CSG) overseeding effects on coverage and species transition in Korean lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) and to determine CSGs and their seeding rate for a practical overseeding. Treatments were comprised of Kentucky bluegrass (KB, Poa pratensis L.), perennial ryegrass (PR, Lolium perenne L.), tall fescue (TF, Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and their mixtures. Significant differences were observed in turfgrass coverage and species transition. Since overseeding, the coverage was highest in PR, followed by TF and lowest in KB. The highest coverage in polystand was associated with Mixture IV (TF 50 + PR 50) at a seeding rate of $150gm^{-2}$ which had highest PR and TF, but without KB. Regarding turfgrass transition, zoysiagrass recovery continued to come back up to 80% from late March. But it reduced after early October. Zoysiagrass in monostand was greatest in KB and lowest in TF, but variable in polystand. For the fast and great coverage in winter, it would be the best to apply with PR at $100gm^{-2}$ and equal combination of PR and TF by 1/2 in the mixture at $150gm^{-2}$. For the smooth spring transition to zoysiagrass, however, KB application at $50gm^{-2}$ is recommended.
