  • This paper is aimed to analyze the electrical and thermal signal such as ignition possibility, ignition time, thermal characteristics and arc fault power that are associated with electrical fire in case of the occurrence of series arc at IV wiring used for interior wiring at commercial power source. In order to analyze the signal, series arc was induced by generating the constant vibration through vibrating device in the one phase (R phase) and ignition possibility was analyzed along the condition of current value by adding cotton material to the contact point of wiring. The ignition time is shortened as the electric current value increased, burning time is not associated with current value and the temperature rose up to $740^{\circ}C$ though it was not ignited. It was checked out that the temperature was the energy source enough that can generate the fire related with insulation aging of wiring and the inflammable. The possibility of electrical fire by series arc was shown as more than 12% at 5A, more than 42% at 20A and arc showed 27W at 5A, 180W at 20A. It was confirmed that the possibility of electrical fire exists at the condition as above and the circuit breaker did not operate. This data can be used as the reference value for the investigation of electrical fire or development of the circuit breaker.

  • For the analysis of the relatively volatile lead in blood by GFAAS(graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer), one can not raise the ashing temperature beyond certain degree due to the elevation of the baseline. Previous investigations showed that background is stabilized when the ashing temperature is raised to $700^{\circ}C$ using a matrix modifier. In this study, same result was obtained at the ashing temperature of around $550^{\circ}C$ even when the matrix modifier is not used and only Triton X-100 is used as a diluent, on an instrument which is equipped with both temperature and current controller(Shimadzu, AA-6501S) and thus the temperature control is fast and accurate. Background correction methods of $D_2$ arc and SR(self reversal) were reviewed. The results show that the absorbance is higher for the $D_2$ arc method, but the background correction is higher for the SR method.

  • The Zn coating on automotive galvanized steel sheets can improve corrosion resistance. However, the boiling temperature of Zn is lower than the melting temperature of steel and it causes well-known spatter and porosity problem. One of most prominent solutions is a pretreatment of Zn coating by an additional welding arc prior to the main welding process. In this research, GTA and GMA are selected as heat sources for pretreatment and main welding processes, respectively. The authors suggested three possible mechanisms to reduce weld defects by the GTA pretreatment: (1) Formation of gap between the sheets; (2) Evaporation of Zn layer; (3) Oxidation of Zn layer. Among them, Zn Oxidation is the most important mechanism to reduce weld defects in the GTA-GMA hybrid process.

  • This paper describes a method to measure a weldment surface temperature for estimating variations of the weld pool size in the gas metal arc(GMA) welding processes. An Infrared sensing system is designed to measure the radiation emitted from the top surface of the weldment, The interference effect of the electric arc to the measurement is rejected by detecting the low peaks of the noisy signal. An optimizing criterion, in which the correlation between the weld quality and the measured temperature is maximized, is also proposed to determine the optimal measurement location.

  • Arc-spot welding is generally used in joining of precise parts such as case and core in electric compressor. It is important to control joining deformation in electric compressor because clearance control of micrometer order is needed for excellent airtightness and anti-nose. The countermeasures for this deformation in field have mainly been dependent on rule of try and error by operator's experience because of productivities. For control this deformation problem without influence on productivities, development of exact simulation model should be needed. In this study, on the basis of previous study, the analysis model io predict deformation of precise order in arc-spot welded structure with non-uniform stiffness is brought up through feedback and tuning between monitoring data and analysis results. For this, deformation monitoring system was built and boundary condition considering mechanical melting temperature was applied.

  • The electrical contact characteristics including temperature rise, contact resistance and arc erosion rate of the $Ag-SnO_2$ materials with increased $SnO_2$ content were investigated during the repeated make-and-break operations. The thickness of arcing melting layer reduces by half and the arc erosion rate decreases more than 70% under 10000 times operations at AC 10 A with the $SnO_2$ content increasing from 15 wt.% to 45 wt.%, on one hand, temperature rise and contact resistance increase obviously but could be reduced to the same order of conventional $Ag-SnO_2$ materials by increasing the contact force. The microstructure evolution and the effect of $SnO_2$ on the arc erosion, contact resistance were analyzed.

  • In order to determine the wear properties of AIP (Arc Ion Plating) deposition, wear process was evaluated by using a Falex test machine. Also, in order to determine the effects of coating material on the wear process, TiC, TiN, and TiCN coatings of thickness about 5 $\mu\textrm{m}$∼6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ coated by Arc ion plating deposition method were tested. The wear property was determined under a dry sliding condition as a function of the applied load, sliding distance, sliding velocity and temperature. The results show that when wear of the coating-layer occurred, specific wear amount increased with the wear rate. At initial state, the wear rate rapidly increased, but it gradually reduced as the velocity increased. Also, when raising the temperature, the wear rate increased in the order of TiCN, TiN and TiC due to the frictional heat.

  • A ball-shape alumina arc-tube for low-wattage lamp was developed by the PIM process. An ultra high purity translucentgrade alumina powder was used. In injection molding process, a hot-runner type mold was developed. The translucent-grade alumina powder was extremely sensitive to contamination so that the injection molding condition and atmosphere control in the furnace should be taken care of with extreme caution. Contamination sources were pinpointed with EPMA. The arc-tube was molded in half and two halves were bonded in the middle by a new bonding technique at room temperature developed in this study.

  • Cr-Al-N coatings were deposited onto WC-Co substrates using a cathodic arc evaporation (CAE) system. CAE technique is recognized to be a very useful process for hard coatings because it has many advantages such as high packing density and good adhesion to metallic substrates. In this study, the influence of deposition temperature as a key process parameter on film growth behavior and mechanical properties of Cr-Al-N coatings were systematically investigated and correlated with microstructural changes. From various analyses, the Cr-Al-N coatings prepared at deposition temperature of 450℃ in the CAE process showed excellent mechanical properties with higher deposition rate. The Cr-Al-N coatings with deposition temperature around 450℃ exhibited the highest hardness of about 35 GPa and elastic modulus of 442 GPa. The resistance to elastic strain to failure (H/E ratio) and the index of plastic deformation (H3/E2 ratio) were also good values of 0.079 and 0.221 GPa, respectively, at the deposition temperature of 450℃. Based on the XRD, SEM and TEM analyses, the Cr-Al-N coatings exhibited a dense columnar structure with f.c.c. (Cr,Al)N multi-oriented phases in which crystallites showed irregular shapes (50~100nm in size) with many edge dislocations and lattice mismatches.

  • Numerical analysis of 150kW Huels-type arc jet was performed using compressible Navier-Stokes CFD code. To consider chemical reaction by high temperature, the flow was assumed to be chemical equilibrium states. As a turbulence and a radiation model, the two-equation k-epsilon model and the 3-band radiation model were adopted, respectively. Mass flow rate and current density were given as conditions for calculations. In this study, two kinds of mechanisms for injection of air flow wire considered. One is that air is provided by left wall surface and the other is that air is injected from upper wall surface. The pressure, density and temperature contours of two cases were compared and heat transfer rates were estimated. The numerical results of two cases were not much different to each other. However, in real 150KW device, air is injected from upper wall surface with swirl. To calculate more accurately, swirl effect is must be considered.
