  • Solvent extraction experiments for separation of impurities from Ni-rich solution were carried out for manufacturing of high purity Ni compounds from acid leaching solution of spent Ni-Cd secondary battery. Artificial and leaching solutions were used as aqueous phases and PC88A saponified by sodium in kerosene were used as organic phase. The extraction order is Zn>Mn>Co>Ni and extraction percentage of metal ions was increased with increase of the concentration of extractant, initial pH of aqueous phase and ratio of O/A. The separation of cobalt, zinc and manganese from nickel was effectively accomplished at the condition of extraction stage=l, O/A=1 and initial pH 5.0 with 1.0 $mol/dm^3$ PC88A saponified to $50\%$ with NaOH.

  • Separation of strontium ion from synthetic seawater in the contained liquid membrane permeator with two micro-porous films was performed. The permeator consisted of a liquid membrane and two cells for aqueous solutions. The liquid membrane consisted of $D_2EHPA(di-2-ethylhexy1-phosphoric acid)$ and DCH18C6 (dicyclohexano-18-crown-6),diluted to 30 vol% with kerosine and was trapped between two micro-porous hydrophilic films. This liquid membrane separated two aqueous solutions, one of which was synthetic seawater and the other of which was the stripping solutions consisting of 1mol/L $H_2SO_4$ solution. The effects of various operating parameters on the extraction rate and equilibrium extraction ratio of strontium ion from synthetic seawater were experimentally examined. The addition of DCH18C6 to the $D_2EHPA$ solution caused synergy effect on the extraction of strontium ion. The permeator extracted strontium ion from synthetic seawater effectively with high membrane life time.

  • Solvent extraction using salphen as a ligand has been investigated for the selective separation and determination of trace Fe(II) and Fe(III). A salphen ligand was synthesized, and solvent extraction variables, such as solution pH, the concentration of salphen, the type of organic solvent, auxiliary agents, oxidants and the effect of interference were optimized. Salphen is stable at pH 3-4, and Fe(III)-salphen complexes can be selectively extracted into an MIBK(4-methyl-2-pentanone) phase from an aqueous solution within this pH range. For the determination of the total amount of iron in 100 mL of aqueous solution, Fe(II) ions were completely oxidized using 0.05 mL of 3.5% H2O2 without side reactions. To evaluate its applicability, the proposed method was applied to determine trace Fe(II) and Fe(III) in several kinds of water samples. Reproducible results were obtained with RSD of less than 3.0%, and the recoveries for this reliability were obtained with 91-112%.

  • A solvent extraction system of copper-thiocyanate complex into various types of alkylamines such as secondary, tertiary and quaternary ammonium salt for the determination of trace copper by atomic absorption spectrometry is presented. The maximum extraction of copper shows at 0.1 M-thiocyanate and single extraction with 10 ml of 1% amine-MIBK from 50 ml of aqueous solution is enough to be quantitative for micro amounts of copper. The effect of amine diluents and of diverse ions are also examined.

  • Background: Salting-out extraction (SOE) had been developed as a special branch of aqueous two-phase system recently. So far as we know, few reports involved in extracting ginsenosides with SOE because of the lower recovery caused by the unique solubility and surface activity of ginsenosides. A new SOE method for rapid pretreatment of ginsenosides from the enzymatic hydrolysates of Panax quinquefolium was established in this article. Methods: The SOE system comprising ethanol and sodium carbonate was selected to extract ginsenosides from the enzymatic hydrolysates of Panax quinquefolium, and HPLC was applied to analyze the ginsenosides. Results: The optimized extraction conditions were as follows: the aqueous two-phase extraction system comprising ethanol, sodium carbonate, ethanol concentration of 41.51%, and the mass percent of sodium carbonate of 7.9% in the extraction system under the experimental condition. Extraction time had minor influence on extraction efficiency of ginsenosides. The results also showed that the extraction efficiencies of three ginsenosides were all more than 90.0% only in a single step. Conclusion: The proposed method had been successfully applied to determine ginsenosides in enzymatic hydrolysate and demonstrated as a powerful technique for separating and purifying ginsenosides in complex samples.

  • Optimal conditions for the supercritical carbon dioxide $(scCO_{2})$ extraction of glycyrrhizin from licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) were investigated, with an emphasis on the types and levels of modifiers. The morphology of the licorice tissue remaining after the $scCO_{2} $ extraction of glycyrrhizin was examined by scanning electron microscopy, coupled with measurements of absolute density. Conventional organic solvent extraction was also carried out for purpose of quantitative comparison. At 50 MPa and $60^{circ}C$ glycyrrhizin could not be extracted with pure $scCO_{2}$, while a considerable amount of glycyrrhizin was extracted when water was added to $scCO_{2}$ as a modifier. The highest recovery was found to be about $97\%$ when $70\%$ aqueous methanol was added to $scCO_{2}$ at a concentration of $15\%$. The optimal pressure and temperature for the supercritical fluid extraction of glycyrrhizin were observed to be 30 M Pa and $60^{circ}C$, respectively. Under these conditions, the percentage recovery of glycyrrhizin attained a maximum value of 102.67\pm$ $1.13\%$ within 60 min. Furthermore, in the case of $scCO_{2}$ modified with $70\%$ aqueous methanol, the licorice tissue obtained after extraction was found to be severely degraded by excessive swelling, and the absolute density of the licorice residues was observed to be the highest.

  • Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) using various solvents was studied for recovery of acetic acid from a synthetic ethanol fermentation broth. The microbial fermentation of sugars presented in hydrolyzate gives rise to acetic acid as a byproduct. In order to obtain pure ethanol for use as a biofuel, fermentation broth should be subjected to acetic acid removal step and the recovered acetic acid can be put to industrial use. Herein, batch LLE experiments were carried out at $25^{\circ}C$ using a synthetic fermentation broth comprising $20.0g\;l^{-1}$ acetic acid and $5.0g\;l^{-1}$ ethanol. Ethyl acetate (EtOAc), tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO), tri-n-octylamine (TOA), and tri-n-alkylphosphine oxide (TAPO) were utilized as solvents, and the extraction potential of each solvent was evaluated by varying the organic phase-to-aqueous phase ratios as 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0. The highest acetic acid extraction yield was achieved with TAPO; however, the lowest ethanol-to-acetic acid extraction ratio was obtained using TOPO. In a single-stage batch extraction, 97.0 % and 92.4 % of acetic acid could be extracted using TAPO and TOPO when the ratio of organic-to-aqueous phases is 4:1 respectively. A higher solvent-to-feed ratio resulted in an increase in the ethanol-to-acetic acid ratio, which decreased both acetic acid purity and acetic acid extraction yield.

  • This study was conducted to develop a functional feed additive for pig with spent $Lycium$ $chinense$ Mill fruit. We investigated the optimum conditions for the extraction of polyphenol from spent $Lycium$ $chinense$ Mill using methanol. Methanol concentration as a solvent for extraction, extraction time and the volume of solvent per a gram of solid (ground spent Lyceum chinense Mill) were selected as parameters. Three levels of parameters were configured according to Box Behnken experiment design, a fractional factorial design, and total 15 trials were employed. Total polyphenol concentration from each trial was used as response from experiment system and effects of parameters on total polyphenol extraction efficiency were determined using response surface model. As a result, all terms in analysis of variance, regression ($p$ = 0.001), linear ($p$ = 0.002), square ($p$ = 0.017) and interaction ($p$ = 0.047) was significant and adjusted determination coefficient ($R^2$) was 94.7%. Total polyphenol extraction efficiency was elevated along increased methanol content and decreased solvent to solid ratio. However extraction time did not affect the efficiency. This study provides a primary information for the optimum extraction conditions to maximize total polyphenol recovery from spent Lycium chinens Mill fruit and this result could be applied to re-use of argo-industrial by-products and to develop of functional feed additives in organic farming.

  • The solubility characteristics of organic compounds were studied in terms of the extraction efficiency as a function of the polarity of the organic solvent, and the acidity of water in urban aerosol samples collected in University of East Anglia (UEA), Norwich, England. The extraction efficiency of organic compounds were evaluated with respect to the organic carbon, -nitrogen and -hydrogen by means of a wide range of solvent which include polar and nonpolar organic solvents as well as acids and alkaline water. In addition, after being dissolved in aqueous solution, the aqueous chemistry of organic compounds were studied in terms of the organic metal complexes in aerosol, which were studied with oxalic acid, copper, and zinc. The results of this study indicate that solubility characteristics of organic compounds depend on the polarity of the solvents and the acidity of the solvents. In particular, some organic compounds are water soluble, even though they are much smaller than acetone soluble fractions. In the comparison between polar organic solvent extraction and non- polar organic solvent extraction, it can be thought that significant fraction of organic compounds analysed in the aerosol samples, are polar organic compounds because of the higher extraction efficiencies of organic compounds in polar organic solvent extraction than in nonpolar organic solvent extraction. Regarding the study of the oxalic -metal complexes, it can be thought that most oxalic acids are present in the form of oxalic -copper complexes in the aerosols collected at UEA.

  • The proposed head-space supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) methodology as an alternative to an existing conventional procedure was explored for the determination of organochlorine compounds in aqueous matrix. In this study, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were utilized as target analytes. To enhance the recovery efficiency, the factors such as the $CO _2$ density, the extraction time, and the extraction mode were investigated. Furthermore, the analytical procedures and the results obtained were compared with those provided by the conventional method (the U.S. EPA method 8080). Under the optimized conditions, i.e., a combination of static with dynamic SFE mode at 2,000 psi and 40 ${^{\circ}C}$, the head-space SFE methodology gave equivalent or better to the conventional method in recovery efficiencies with clear advantages such as simple sample treatment and fast analysis time as well as reduced solvent and reagent consumption.
