Gamdutang aqua-acupuncture solution (GAS), Gamdutang water-extracted solution (GWS) and Dae-Gamdutang aqua-acupuncture solution (DGAS) were prepared and tested for chemopreventive potentials. GAS was potent inducer of quinone reductase (QR) activity in Heapa1c1c7 murine hepatoma cells in culture, whereas GWS is less potent. GAS, GWS and DGAS were significantly induced QR activity in cultured rat normal liver cell, Ac2F. Glutathione (GSH) levels were increased about 1.8, 1.0 and 1.1 fold with GAS, GWS and DGAS in Hepa1c1c7 cells, respectively. In addition glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity was increased with GAS, GWS and DGAS. The effects of GAS, GWS and DGAS on the growth of Acanthamoeba castellanii were tested. Proliferation of A. castellanii was inhibited by GAS, GWS and DGAS at concentrations of 1 $\times$ and 5$\times$. These results suggest that GAS has chemopreventive potential by inducing QR and GST activities, increasing GSH levels and inhibition of polyamine metabolism.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of aqua-acupuncture of Laennec N HO (Hominis placenta Cervi pontotrichum cornu Carthami semen). on trabecular area and physiological change in ovariectomized osteoporotic rats. This experiment was performed to .investigate an antiosteoporosis. effects of Laennec N HO(Hominis placenta Cervi pontotrichum cornu Carthmi semen) aqua-acupuncture on the osteoporosis induced by both ovariectomy in Rats. So rats were divided into Sham group and OVX group. OVX groups were divided into control group, Exp. I group, Exp II group and Exp III group). The Ratios of trabecular area seen in ephiphysis and diaphysis of tibia and lumbar vertebral body and physiological change were as follows. 1. In the proximal ephiphysis of tibia, Exp I II III groups were significantly increased compared to that in control group (p<0.05). 2. In the diaphysis of tibia, Exp III group were significantly increased compared to that in control group (p<0.05). 3. In the first lumbar vertebral body, Exp II group were significantly increased compared to that in control group. 4. In the cortical thickness index of tibia, Exp III III groups were significantly increased compared to that in control group. 5. Osteoca1cin was increased in the Exp II group than those of other Experiment groups and control group, and Phosphorus was decreased in the Exp I II group than that in control group, But a significant difference was not seen. GOT, GPT and Alkaline phosphatase were decreased in all Experiment groups than that in control group. But a significant difference was not seen. From the above results, it might be suggested that aqua-acupuncture Laennec N HO(Hominis placenta Cervi pontotrichum cornu Carthami semen) prevented the increase in bone turnover and the decrese in bone mass induced by OVX in rats.

Objectives : In order to study the effects of Harpagophyti Radix Aqua -acupuncture in rats with arthritis induced by Freund's complete adjuvant, performed several experimental items : that is edema rate, number of WBC, hemazocrit, platelet, total protein and albumin. Methods : In this study rats were divided into five groups : Normal group (non treated group), Control group (non-injected group in rats with arthritis induced by FCA), ST group (0.2cc normal Saline-injected group at right Chok-Samni(Zusanli,$ST_{36}$) once in every two days during the two weeks in rats with arthritis induced by FCA), HRS group (0.2cc Harpagophyti Radix-subcutaneous injected group once in every two days during the two weeks in rats with arthritis induced by FCA), HRST group (0.2cc Harpagophyti Radix-injected group at Chok-Samni($ST_{36}$) once in every two days during the two weeks in rats with arthritis induced by FCA). Results : 1. In the right plantar edema, HRS group showed a decrease with statistical significance on the 2 weeks and HRST group showed a decrease with statistical significance on the 1 weeks as compared with control group. 2. In the WBC, HRST group showed a meaningful decrease with statistical significance and also HRS group showed a decrease with statistical significanae as compared with control group. 3. In the platelet, HRST group showed a decrease with statistical significance as compared with control group. 4. In the hematocrit, HRS group showed a increase with statistical significance as compared with control group. 5. In the serum total protein and albumin, HRS group showed a increase with statistical significance as compared with control group. Conclusions : According to the above result, it is concluded that Harpagophyti Radix Aqua-acupuncture showed the therapeutic effect of antiinflammation in adjuvant arthritis and it is suggested that further studies and researchs for clinical use be needed.

Objectives : Circium japonicum is a pharmacologically active used in traditional Korean medicine. An aqua-acupuncture solution of the Circium japonicum was assessed to determine the mechanism of its antioxidant activity. Materials : Circium japonicum was obtained from a Dongguk Korean Medicine Hospital (Kyung-ju, Kyungbuk). The freeze-dry powder was collected (yield 5.1%) for the aqua-acupuncture solution. Scavenging activity on DPPH free radicals by the Circium japonicum aqua-acupuncture solution (CJAS) was assessed according to the method followed by Gyamfi et al.. and then scavenging activity orl superoxide radicals $(O_2^-{\cdot})$ was assessed by the method described by Gotoh et al. with slight modification. Deoxyribose assay to determine the rate constant for the reactions between either antioxidants and hydroxyl radicals or antioxidants and iron ions. We tested by; (1) Non-site-specific scavenging assay (hydroxyl radicals, OH), (2) Site-specific scavenging assay (chelate iron ions), and (3) Pro-oxidant effect of the CJAS on iron dependent hydroxyl radical generation. Finally, we determined hydroxyl radical-mediated DNA nicking formation. Conclusion : Our study demonstrated that CJAS has antioxidant activities and we investigated the potential effectiveness of CJAS in preventing oxidative stress-mediated disease further.

Taraxacunf mongofieum Hand-Mass aqua-acupuncture solution (TMAS) was prepared and investigated og, the effect on initiation of carcinogenesis. The following effe.Is as a blocking agent were measured. .(a) Indu.ction of quinone reductase, (b) Induction of glutathione S-transferase activity (c) Increase of reduced glutathione. TMAS was potent inducer of quinone reductase in Hepa Iclc7 murine hepatoma cells. Clutathione S-transferase activity was increased with TMAS. In addition glutathione levels were increased about 1.6-fold with TMAS in cultured murine hepatoma Hepa Iclc7 cells.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of chondrocyte re-differentiation in using ukmijihwang-Tang gamibang aqua-acupuncture. Methods In this study, chondrocytes were extracted from New Zealand white rabbit's knee joint, and cultured in monolayer after collagenase treatment. In the third passage, after the mRNA transcript of the type II collagen significantly reduced, diluted Yukmijihwang-Tang gamibang were added to cultured of chondrocyte, and its effect on the mRNA expression of type II collagen was quantitatively evaluated. Results As a result of treatment with Yukmijihwang-Tang gamibang in vitro for 48 hours, the mRNA expression of type II collagen was up-regulated. In addition, the result of H&E-staining in vivo indicated that chondrocyte-like tissues were formed in repairing injured cartilages after 12 weeks of treatment with Yukmijihwang-Tang gamibang. Conclusions These results indicated that Yukmijihwang-Tang gamibang was effective on the recovery of chondrocyte phenotype, and could be used for cartilage regeneration in arthritic diseases. However, more clinical study of Oriental medical treatment for this case might be also needed.

Cervus elaphus, being known to reinforce Kidney, have tested to study the effects concerning damages of brain tissue induced by lipid peroxidation. In vitro, the level of lipid peroxide in brain tissue was decreased proportinally according to dose by Cervus elaphus extract solution for aqua-acupuncture (CESAA). It was much more decreased, when lipid peroxidation was induced with Fe(II). And, it was seen proportinally decrease according to the dose of CESAA on xanthine oxidase activities and type conversion ratio. However, I can not find special changes about aldehyde oxidase activities. And, I had observed the effects of CESAA on damages of rat's brain following ischemia and reflow. Before ischemia was caused, CESAA was applied 0.2 ml per 250 g through femoral vein in ischemia and reflow group and normal sailine was applied in normal group. Ischemia was caused by cervical artery's clamp for 30 min and reflowed by clamp remove after 15 min. It was increased on the content of lipid peroxidation, activies and type conversion ratio of xanthine oxidase following ischemia and reflow. However, they were decreased when CESAA was pre-appllied. However, it could not seen special changes on aldehyde oxidase activities, either. In conclusion. CESAA recovers the damage of brain due to ischemia and reflow by decreasing the lipid peroxidation through decreasing of xanthine oxidase activies and type conversion ratio.

Background and Purpose : This study shows the clinical effects on treatment with Rheumatoid arthritis using Aqua-acupuncture such as Ursi Fel Bovis Calculus and Cathami Flos that are known for which have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Objective and Methods : This study has been carried out Aqua-acupuncture treatment such as Cathami Flos and Ursi Fel Bovis Calculus twice or three times a week with patients diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis on 7 criteria of US Rheumatism Academy. Results : 1. If you see the sexual distribution, it shows the rates of male and female 1: 1.83. Age distribution shows as age ascend it shows high. 2. If you see the duration distribution, it shows chronic tendency in order of more than 6 months(63.3%), 2 to 5 months, and I month. 3. If you see the invaded distribution, it shows chronic tendency in order of hand(37 cases), wrist joint(34 cases), knee joint(32 cases), ankle joint(21 cases), elbow joint(16 cases), shoulder joint(14 cases), feet(14 cases), hip joint(9 cases), low back(6 cases), neck(4 cases). 4. Seeing the mean post-therapeutic index among groups on RA factor level distinction, it shows that 0-18(normal range) scored 89.0, 19-50 scored 94.8, 51-80 scored 101.2, 81-100 scored 97.3, 101-140 scored 102.4, above 141 scored 97.5. 5. Seeing the mean post-therapeutic index among groups on CRP level distinction, it shows that 0-0.4(normal range) scored 100, 0.5-1.0 scored 48.6, 1.1-2.0 scored 34.9, 2.1-3.0 scored 35.7, 3.1-4.0 scored 37.1, 4.1-5.0 scored 53.8, above 5.0 scored 70.4. 6. Seeing the mean post-therapeutic index among groups on ESR level distinction, it shows that 0-20(normal range) scored 48.6, 21-40 scored 57.5, 41-60 scored 59.2, 61-80 scored 59.2, above 81 scored 66.0. 7. If you see the satisfactory assesment after Aqua-acupuncture treatment such as Cathami Flos and Ursi Fel Bovis Calculus, Excellent is 11 cases, Good is 14 cases, and Moderate 5 cases. Conclusion : It will be better effects, if herbal medicine, moxibustion, and acupuncture are used together with Cathami Flos and Ursi Fel Bovis Calculus on rheumatoid arthritis as chronic inflammatory disease.

To investigate effects of Paeonia Radix Rubra aqua-acupuncture on Adjuvant Athritis in rats, the edema rate, the number of WBC, the quantity of total protein, albumin and globuline in the blood serum were measured and histological test of the muscular tissue were done in the arthritis part. 1. After arthritis of Sprague dawley(SD) rats was induced by injecting Freund's complete adjuvant for 2 weeks, normal saline was injected for the Control group and Paeonia Radix Rubra acua-acupuncture was injected for the Exp. group during 30 days. Selected point was $D{\acute{u}}bf(ST_{35})$ in both groups. And then the inframmator volume of plantar were checked. The volume of the plantar was $0.84{\pm}0.14mm$ in Control group and $0.57{\pm}0.09mm$ in Exp. group, the swelling of plantar was restricted significanily in Exp, group(P<0.05). 2. The number of WBC was $10.34{\pm}0.14(10^3/ml)$ in normal group and $37.47{\pm}5.46(10^3/ml)$ in Control group. It was $25.21{\pm}3.45(10^3/ml)$ in Exp. group. This fact showed that Exp group. with Paeonia Radix Rubra acua-acupuncture was more effective than Control group in the treatment of arthritis(P<0.05). 3. The content of total protein in the blood serum were $6.14{\pm}0.43g/d{\ell}$ in normal group, $7.95{\pm}0.94g/d{\ell}$ in Control group, and $6.82{\pm}1.23g/d{\ell}$ in Exp. group. There was no significance in total protein between Exp. group and Control group from the statistical analysis. 4. The contents of albumin in the blood serum were $2.94{\pm}0.13g/d{\ell}$ in normal group, $2.01{\pm}0.48g/d{\ell}$ in Control group and $2.75{\pm}0.14g/d{\ell}$ in Exp, group. This fact showed that Exp. group had significant increase in the serum albumin from the statistical analysis, in comparison with Control group(P<0.05). 5. The contents of globulin in the blood serum were $3.19{\pm}0.48g/d{\ell}$ in normal group, $4.70{\pm}1.26g/d{\ell}$ in Control group and $3.58{\pm}0.73g/d{\ell}$ in Exp. group. There was no significance in the serum globulin between Exp. group and Control group from the statistical analysis. 6. In histological examinadon, because inflammatory reaction was active, remarkably irregular tissue and large amount of inflammatory cells were found in Control. group. But Exp. group showed that tissues were in some degree recovered, the number of inflamed cells was decreased and inflammation was restrained. From these results, it is shown Paeonia Radix Rubra aqua-acupuncture restrained inflammatory reaction and muscular tissue necrosis in SD rat's plantar was restrained by Freund's complete adjuvant.
