  • The results of source location in terms of AE signal occurred by the spot exciting as suggested in this research, it has been confirmed that AE technique is quite fruitful in figuring out the location of the occurrence, form, size and direction of the defects. Thus, it is expected that the application of the experimental method suggested in this study would make it possible to identify, in the nondestructive way, the location of the defect in the material.

선박의 용접구조 피로시험에 대한 음향방출기법의 적용 연구 (A Study on the Application of Acoustic Emission for the fatigue Test of Ship Welded Structure)

  • 본 연구에서는 선박 용접구조물의 피로균열 발생 여부와 균열의 진전 상황을 실시간으로 모니터링하기 위한 기초 연구단계로서 선박의 전형적인 용접형태인 필렛용접부(fillet welded joint)의 피로시험에 대한 음향방출(Acoustic Emission, AE)기법의 적용성을 검토하였다. 필렛용접부의 피로시험에서 균열의 발생과 진전, 위치를 검출하기 위하여 AE 카운트(ring down count)와 위치표정(source location)등을 이용하였다. 시험결과 용접 토우(toe)부의 표면균열(surface crack)이 관통균열(through crack)로 발전하기 전까지의 AE 신호는 비교적 미약하게 나타났으나 균열의 발생시점과 위치를 카운트-위치표정으로 어느 정도 추정 가능함을 확인하였다. 표면균열이 브라켓의 두께방향으로 관통한 시점에서는 AE 카운트의 양이 급격히 증가하였으며 카운트-위치표정, 이벤트(event)-위치표정으로 균열의 위치와 발생시점을 명확하게 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 AE 위치표정과 클러스터(cluster) 기능을 이용하여 균열발생 위치 이외의 영역에서 검출된 신호는 잡음에 기인한 것으로 추정할 수 있었다.

AE에 의한 치과용 다이아몬드 버의 연삭가공 특성 (Grinding Characteristics of Diamond Burs in Dentistry)

  • This study was carried out to verify finding performance of dental diamond bur and investigate the possibility of AE application in density field. Work pieces were made of acryl and bovine respectively for the experiments in this study. Grinding test was conducted to get the data of grinding resistance and specific finding energy of low different types of diamond bur by using tool dynamometer. AE signal was acquired to verify grinding process in the AE measuring system. AErms value was increased as the grinding velocity and depth were increasing, but it decreased as the feed rate was increasing. The case of the small value of AE signal is due to abnormal grinding in D type diamond bur. By analyzing AErms start and finish time of grinding working, abnormal grinding state can be confined. Abnormal state can be found through the behavior of AE signal in the finding working. As a result, it is expected that forecast of abnormal state is possible using AE equipments under real time process.

  • A monitoring system for magnetic abrasive polishing process is necessary to ensure the polishing products the high quality and integrity. Acoustic emission (AE) signal is known to reflect the material removal phenomena in other machining processes. In a case of the magnetic abrasive polishing of non-magnetic materials, application of AE method is very difficult because of lower machining force on the surface of workpiece and the level of AE signal is extremely lower. In this study, AE sensor-based monitoring system is applied to the magnetic abrasive polishing. The relation between the level of the AE RMS and the surface roughness during the magnetic abrasive polishing of magnesium alloy steel is investigated.

굴삭기용 호스 니플의 마찰용접과 음향방출기법의 적용 (Application of Acoustic Emission Technique and Friction Welding for Excavator Hose Nipple)

  • 마찰용접은 축 대칭 단면금속을 용접하는 매우 유용한 결합 과정이다. 본 논문에서는 굴삭기용 호스 니플의 관대관 마찰용접을 시행하여 수송산업 등에 적용 가능성을 제안하고 마찰용접 변수의 기계적 특성을 분석하여 최적화 조건을 결정하고자 하였다. 회전속도, 마찰가열압력 및 가열시간 등 주요 변수를 선정하고 각 매개변수의 세 가지 수준에서 실험을 수행하였다. 한편, 최적의 마찰용접조건을 비파괴적으로 도출하기 위하여 음향방출기법이 적용되었으며 카운터, 이벤트 및 파형과 주파수 스팩트럼 등의 AE 파라미터들을 이용하여 마찰용접시 발생하는 신호를 분석하고자 하였다. 인장시험 결과 최적의 용접 변수는 회전속도 1300 rpm, 마찰가열압력 15 MPa, 마찰가열시간 10초로 나타났으며, 이벤트는 마찰용접된 시험편의 인장강도를 추정하는데 유용한 파라미터가 되었다.

Acoustic emission source location and noise cancellation for crack detection in rail head

  • Taking advantage of the high sensitivity and long-distance detection capability of acoustic emission (AE) technique, this paper focuses on the crack detection in rail head, which is one of the most vulnerable parts of rail track. The AE source location and noise cancellation were studied on the basis of practical rail profile, material and operational noise. In order to simulate the actual AE events of rail head cracks, field tests were carried out to acquire the AE waves induced by pencil lead break (PLB) and operational noise of the railway system. Wavelet transform (WT) was first utilized to investigate the time-frequency characteristics and dispersion phenomena of AE waves. Here, the optimal mother wavelet was selected by minimizing the Shannon entropy of wavelet coefficients. Regarding the obvious dispersion of AE waves propagating along the rail head and the high operational noise, the wavelet transform-based modal analysis location (WTMAL) method was then proposed to locate the AE sources (i.e. simulated cracks) respectively for the PLB-induced AE signals with and without operational noise. For those AE signals inundated with operational noise, the Hilbert transform (HT)-based noise cancellation method was employed to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Finally, the experimental results demonstrated that the proposed crack detection strategy could locate PLB-simulated AE sources effectively in the rail head even at high operational noise level, highlighting its potential for field application.

크랭크 샤프트강재의 마찰용접 최적화와 AE 실시간 평가 (Optimization of Friction Welding for Crank Shaft Steels and Its Real Time AE Evaluation)

  • The crank shafts need anti-corrosion materials. So STS 304 is the essential material to manufacture this shaft. However, it costs more to manufacture the shafts by using only STS 304 than welding of STS 304 to other carbon steels. And it has been difficult to weld this sort of dissimilar materials. They could be unstable in the quality by the conventional arc welding. And also they have a lot of technical problems in manufacturing. But by the friction welding technique, it will be able to be made without such problems. Then, this study aimed not only to develop the optimization of dissimilar friction welding of crank shafts steels of STS 304, SM35C, but also to develop the application technique of the acoustic emission to accomplish in-process real-time quality(such as tensile) evaluation during friction welding of the shafts by the AE technique.

  • The application and development of on-line monitoring technology of AE to surveillance of crack propagation will contribute to the structural integrity of reactor pressure vessel and piping system. This research has been performed in order to obtain the evaluation technology for source location of AE and the analysis for the AE signal of the welded specimen. AE is detected by 4-channels AE system during pressurization in small pressure vessels. The cracking of artificial defects can be accurately located and categorized in real time. The welded specimens have more events rate and higher amplitude than the weldless less specimens, and the events rate have a peak around the yield point and just before the failure under tensile test.

  • This study aimed not only to develop the optimization of dissimilar friction welding of pinion gear of a motor vehicle steels of SCM415 and SMn443, but also to develop the application technique of the acoustic emission to accomplish an in-process real-time quality(such as strength and toughness) evaluation during friction welding of the pinion gear by the AE technique.

  • This paper aims at reviewing the possibility application over normal or abnormal, detection used by AE and the characteristics of grinding process. In this study, when diamond bur in dentistry with chosen grinding conditions were tuned at grinding. The variation of grinding resistance and AE signal is detected by the use of AE measuring system. The tests are carried out in accordance with diamond burs and workpiece: arcyl and cowteeth. According to the experiment results, the following can be expected; AE has the possibility to detect the state normality and abnormality. However, the grinding resistance measuring can find it difficult to detect it. It can be accurately excepted from AE occurrence pattern in contact start point of diamond but and cowteeth, grinding condition and derailment point. It is known that AErms is well compatible with grinding resistance.
