  • Renal cyst was detected in a mongrel dog aged 3 months old. The most prominent clinical abnormalities were vomiting, loss of appetite, depression, abdominal swelling and lethargy. Gross appearances included ascites and bilaterally irregular capsular surfaces of the kidneys. Characteristic microscopical findings were various sized cysts formation, shrunken glomeruli with hypercellularity, connective tissue porliferation in the interstitum, tubular dilatation and sligth leukocytic infiltration. The cause. of the renal disorder in a mongrel dog could not be determined.

  • The street lighting needs to provide safe and comfortable environment together with producing good atmosphere suitable for the pedestrian's various needs. Thus, the choice of the street lighting fixtures should be based on the needs of the them and the necessities of the street rather than the precedences or appearances. This study proposes street lighting fixtures based on the need of the street lighting and also analyzes the problems of current fixtures.

  • We report a larentiine species, Collix stellata Warren, for the first time from Korea. Two males and one female were collected from Jeju-do Island, South Korea. Collix stellata is similar to Collix ghosa Walker in external appearances, but can be distinguished by the relatively larger discal dot on forewing and the relatively slender valva with distally projected margin of male genitalia. Diagnosis and description of the species are given with the figures of the genitalia.

  • Sclerosing hemangiomas of the lung are uncommon benign tumors. Although their histologic appearances are distinct and well-defined, their histogenesis is uncertain. Liebow and Hubbell reported seven cases of unusual pulmonary lesions which they named sclerosing hemangiomas in 1856. Similar cases had previously been reported under different names: Xanthoma, pulmonary histiocytoma, Xanthofibroma. We have experienced 3 cases of sclerosing hemangioma of lung at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Yonsei University, college of Medicine, Seoul, Korea during a period of December 1985 through September 1988. This report is an early result of surgical treatment of three patients with pulmonary sclerosing hemangioma and their pathologic findings.

  • Sound absorbing materials are divided into several types according to the appearances and the characteristics. Basic mechanism of sound absorption in various sound absorbing materials is the conversion of sound energy into hat energy. Here the important elements which govern by the conversion from sound into heat depend on the type of materials. (omitted)

  • We have collected two species of firefly, Hotaria papariensis and Hotaria unmunsana to investigate their patterns of appearances and distributions from May to July in 1999 at 18 localities in Korea. A total of 1,096 individuals of these two species were collected: H. papariensis 584 and H unmunsana 512. The highest appearance level of adult firefly was different from each altitude. They appeared from the beginning of June to the end of June at 200 m sea level, the middle of June to the end of June at 200∼400 m, the end of June to the beginning of July at 400∼600 m and the beginning of July to the middle of July at 600∼800 m, respectively, All regions of these two species were cohabit, but Cheju-do region is the exceptional case. H papariensis was dominant at the northern parts and H unmunsana was the southern parts of Korean peninsula.

  • This research was conducted over a time span of three years, from 2009 to 2011. Twenty-one surveys in total, seven times per year, were done between April and June of each year on major trees on trails around Donghaksa and Gapsa in Mt. Gyeryong National Park in order to identify foodplants of the Lepidoptera larvae and their characteristic appearances. During the survey of Lepidoptera larvae in trees along trails around Donghaksa and Gapsa, 377 individuals and 21 species in 8 families were identified. The 21 species were Alcis angulifera, Cosmia affinis, Libythea celtis, Adoxophyes orana, Amphipyra monolitha, Acrodontis fumosa, Xylena formosa, Ptycholoma lecheana circumclusana, Choristoneura adumbratana, Archips capsigeranus, Pandemis cinnamomeana, Rhopobota latipennis, Apochima juglansiaria, Cifuna locuples, Lymantria dispar, Eilema deplana, Rhodinia fugax, Acronicta rumicis, Amphipyra erebina, Favonius saphirinus, and Dravira ulupi. Twenty-one Lepidoptera insect species were identified in 21 species of trees, including Zelkova serrata. Among them, A. angulifera, C. affinis, and L. celtis were found to have the widest range of foodplants. Additionally, it was found that many species of Lepidoptera insects can utilize more species as foodplants according to the chemical substances in the plants and environments in addition to the foodplants noted in the literature. Also, it is thought that more species can be identified with a survey of various woody and herbaceous plants.

  • Purpose: This retrospective study was designed to evaluate the appearances of plantar fasciitis by ultrasonography. Materials and Methods: 48 cases of unilateral plantar fasciitis were enrolled in this study. Plain radiograph and realtime sonography of both feet were perfomred and the results were compared between the affected feet and controlateral symptomless feet. Calcaneal spur were observed on plain radiograph and thickness of plantar fascia, hypoechogenecity, blurring of border of plantar fascia, perifascial effusion, wavy plantar fascia were observed on sonography. Results: Women (35 cases) and left feet (30 cases) were more frequent than men and right feet. Thickness of plantar fascia in affected site was thicker than normal site (p<0.01). Hypoechogenecity was observed only in 39 cases (81%) affected site, blurring of border of plantar fascia in affected site was 30 cases (62%) and 7 cases (15%) in normal site, perifascial effusion was observed only in 38 cases (79%) affected site, wavy plantar fascia in affected site was 43 cases (90%) and 2 cases (4%) in normal site. Calcaneal spur in affected site was 36 cases (75%) and 33 cases (69%) in normal site. Conclusion: Sonography is a useful diagnostic procedure for the plantar fasciitis especially in the unilateral plantar fasciitis.

  • This study was carried out to develop eco-friendly wood street lamp (EFWSL) by using wood resources stacked in the forests after tree tending operations which were mostly abandoned, but economical as renewable wood resources for developing the wood coated street lamps with the effects of cost reduction and their attractive appearances. This study has led to the development of key compact structures of street-lighting wood poles (shaft) using laminated timber. The core technique in this study is related with producing the more stable wood poles (shaft) with the hole inside than wood poles exposed under the natural environment through applicable process to protect the wood from bursting and splitting. We also comprehensively developed the method to conserve the timber durability of wood shaft and connect the wood shaft with groove, race way to be located in the groove, locking ring, current stabilizer connected to the groove and luminaire support arm, base and hand-hole which was partly used in combination with steel materials and wood. Also we increased the utilization of abandoned and stacked woods after thinning in the forests such as Pinus densiflora, Larix leptolepis, and Pinus koraiensis plantations by maximizing the value of these natural wood resources as main materials of eco-friendly street lightings with the effects of cost reduction and attractive appearances and also the expectation of advertising effects of street lightings developed in this study.
