Effects of Functional Oils on Coccidiosis and Apparent Metabolizable Energy in Broiler Chickens

  • The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of a mixture of functional oils (Essential, Oligo Basics Agroind. Ltda) on performance response of chickens challenged with coccidiosis and the determination of apparent metabolizable energy (AME), nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn), the coefficients of protein and ether extract digestibility and intestinal morphology of broilers fed with diets containing Essential. In Exp. 1, a completely randomized design (CRD) was used, with one control diet without Essential inclusion with coccidiosis (Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria maxima, and Eimeria tenella) challenged birds and two different inclusion rates of Essential (1.5 kg/ton and 2 kg/ton) with coccidiosis-challenged and non-challenged birds for each inclusion rate, using 10 replicates and 50 birds per experimental unit. After 7 d of coccidiosis challenge, the livability was approximately 10% lower (p<0.05) for the control group. Intestinal lesion scores were lower (p<0.05) in the anterior intestine and the cecum for the chickens supplemented. Feed efficiency and growth rate were improved in birds supplemented with Essential (p<0.05) before the coccidiosis challenge and during the first 7 d post infection. In Exp. 2, a CRD was used, with one control diet without Essential inclusion and one diet with inclusion of Essential (1.5 kg/ton), using nine replications and 33 chicks per pen. The diets with Essential yielded approximately 4% higher AME (p = 0.003) and $AME_n$ (p = 0.001). Essential supplementation increased villus height in the jejunum on d 14 (p<0.05). Villus height:crypt depth ratio for the supplemented birds was larger (p<0.05) in the jejunum on d 7, larger (p<0.05) in the jejunum and ileum on d 14. In conclusion, these functional oils improved the energy utilization and the livability and decreased lesions caused by coccidiosis in supplemented birds.

A study on estimation of metabolizable energy content in starch-foods and seaweeds (주요 당류 및 해조류의 대사 에너지 함량 평가에 관한 연구)

  • The validity of the energy data of the starch-foods and seaweeds in Korean food composition tables has been suspected due to possible differences in their chemical compositions from those of western food ingredients. Energy conversion parameters being used currently in nutrition has been derived in countries where food items re quite different from ours. This study was undertaken to determine the metabolizable energy of starch-foods and seaweeds by the method selected in preexperiment20). Cooked starch foods and seaweeds were freeze-dried and fed to Sprague Dawley rat with 200∼300g body weight to measure apparent metabolizable energy (AME) values and nitrogen-corrected AME (AMEn) values for four days after three days of preliminary period for adaptation to the diets. The AME and AMEn values of the wheat noodle were 4554.6, 4584.7, the Starch Vermicelli, 3763.4, 3855.7, the Ra myon, 4916.9, 4876.0, the Buckwheat noodle, 4469.7, 4442.0kcal/kg dry matter, the Potato, 4514.6, 4520.0 and those of the Bread, 3256.9, 3582.6, 3260.5, kcal/kg dry matter, respectively. Those of Sea tangle were 1437.3, 1631.3 and of Laver, 3126.6, 3171.3kcal/kg dry matter, resectively. When the AME values of the starch-foods and seaweeds measureed in present study were compared with energy values calculated by various conversion parameters such as Atwater's Rubner's, Sochun's and FAO's, there appeared dramatic differences indicating that for many of the food items, the latter energy values by conversion factors are hardly acceptable. These data also suggest that the existing energy conversion factors are not applicable to seaweeds and a further study is needed to obtain specific factors for the conversion to biological energy from the chemical composition of seaweeds.

  • The characteristics of critical spontaneous ignition of granulated activated carbon were investigated In atmospheres of differing oxygen concentration. At the same concentration the larger vessels yielded the lower critical spontaneous ignition temperature. At the same vessel, as the concentration of oxygen was reduced, Ignition occurred later and at higher ambient temperature, and critical spontaneous ignition temperature increased. The apparent activation energy calculated from the Frank-Kamenetskii's ignition theory appeared to be the slight different value respectively and the mean apparent activation energy was 19850㎈/㏖.

  • The experiment was made to study the effect of levels of metabolizable energy of basal diets on apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and true metabolizable energy (TME) values of corn and soybean meals. The test materials, corn and soybean meals, were substituted with basal diet at 50% and 30%, respectively. The excreta of fed md unfed birds were collected for 30 hours. The results obtained were as follows; 1. The AME values of corn were not significantly different among treatments (P>0.05) except for 2400 Kcal/13% treatment, The AME values of soybean meals differed significantly between 2,400 Kcal/13% and 2,800 Kcal/15% or 3,000 Kcal/16%, but were not different between 2,400 Kcal/13% and 2,600 Kcal/14 % (probability at 5% level). 2. The energy levels of basal diets did not affect the AME values of corn and soybean meals (P>0.05) except 2,400 Kcal/13% treatment. This fact indicates that it is not necessary to change energy levels of basal diet according to test materials. 3. That the values of standard error of soybean meals were higher than those of corn was resulted from its low level of substitution with basal diet. 4. The TME values of corn showed significant differences (P<0.05) between 2,400Kcal/13% treatment and other treatments but those of soybean meals were not different among all treatments (P>0.05). 5. The reason that the AME values of corn and soybean meals and the TME values of corn reduced significantly in 2,400 Kcal/13% could be explained by the effect of interaction among ingredients in the diet.

Apparent Digestibility Coefficients of Various Feed Ingredients for Olive Flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus (사료원료에 대한 넙치 Paralichthys olivaceus 소화율 평가)

  • The apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter, crude protein and energy in white fishmeal, herring meal, anchovy meal, salmon meal, sardine meal, mackerel meal, squid meal, soybean meal, corn gluten meal and wheat flour were determined for olive flounder. Digestibility coefficients were determined using a reference diet and test diets that contained 70% of the reference diet mixture and 30% test ingredients. All diets contained 0.5% chromic oxide as a digestibility indicator. The fish averaging 220 g were held in 500 L tanks at a density of 20 fish per tank. Feces were collected from three replicated groups of fish using a fecal collection column attached to a fish-rearing tank. The apparent dry matter, crude protein and energy digestibility coefficient values observed were in the ranges 29-79%, 59-95% and 45-91%, respectively, for various test ingredients. The apparent dry matter, crude protein and energy digestibility of white fishmeal, herring meal, anchovy meal, salmon meal, sardine meal, mackerel meal and squid meal were significantly higher than those of soybean meal, corn gluten meal and wheat flour.

Evaluation of Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Insulation Material Using Inorganic Filler and Polyurethane (무기질 충진재와 폴리우레탄을 활용한 유·무기 복합 단열소재의 특성 평가)

  • Recently, inorganic-organic hybrid materials have attracted much attention not only for their excellent thermal conductivity but also for their flame retardant properties. In this study, the properties of organic-inorganic hybrid insulating materials using inorganic fillers and polyurethane foam with different foaming conditions have been investigated. The addition of 1.5 wt% water to polyurethane as foaming agent shows the best foaming properties. The pore size was decreased in the foaming body with increasing of the $CaCO_3$ addition. The apparent density and thermal conductivity were increased by increasing the $CaCO_3$ addition. With an increasing amount of $CaCO_3$ powder, the flame retardant property is improved, but the properties of thermal conductivity and apparent density tend to decrease. When the addition of fine particles of $CaCO_3$, the apparent density and thermal conductivity were increased and, also, with the addition of coarse particles over $45{\mu}m$ in size, the apparent density and thermal conductivity were increased as well. In this study, the adding of $CaCO_3$ with average particle size of $27{\mu}m$ led to the lowest thermal conductivity and apparent density. After evaluation with different inorganic fillers, $Mg(OH)_2$ showed the highest thermal conductivity; on the other hand, $CaCO_3$ showed the lowest thermal conductivity.

Effects of Coated Compound Proteases on Apparent Total Tract Digestibility of Nutrients and Apparent Ileal Digestibility of Amino Acids for Pigs

  • Two experiments were conducted to evaluate effects of coated compound proteases (CC protease) on apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nitrogen (N) and energy, and apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of amino acids (AA) and nutrients in diets for pigs. In Exp. 1, 12 crossbred barrows (initial body weight: $20.79{\pm}1.94kg$) were housed in individual metabolism crates and allotted into 2 treatments with 6 piglets per treatment according to weight in a randomized complete block design. The 2 diets were corn-soybean meal basal diets with (0.2 g/kg) or without CC protease supplementation. The CC protease supplementation increased (p<0.05) the digestible and metabolizable N and energy values and the digestibility and retention rate of N in the diet. The ATTD of energy and nutrients had been improved (p<0.05) in the diet supplemented with CC protease. In Exp. 2, 12 crossbred barrows (initial body weight: $20.79{\pm}1.94kg$), fitted with T-cannulas at the distal ileum, were blocked by body weight into 2 groups with 6 pigs each. The diets were the same as those in Exp. 1. The CC protease increased (p<0.05) the AID of crude protein and some essential AA including arginine, isoleucine and leucine. The AID and ATTD of energy and nutrients had been improved (p<0.05) by supplemental CC protease, but the hindgut digestibility of nutrients was unaffected. Overall, the CC protease improved the ATTD of N and energy and AID of some indispensible AA and nutrients in the corn-soybean meal diet for pigs. Therefore, the CC protease supplement could improve the utilization of protein in the corn-soybean meal diet and thus contribute to lower N excretion to the environment.

  • In this work, the properties of an organic-inorganic hybrid insulating material using an inorganic filler and polyurethane foam with different foaming conditions were investigated. At weight ratios of polyol and isocyanate of 1 to 1.2 good foaming properties were noted. In addition, an addition of 0.4 g of water, 0.1 g of surfactant, and 0.1 g of catalyst with respect to the composites of polyol at 5 g and isocyanate at 6 g showed the lowest apparent density and thermal conductivity. The pore size was smaller in the organic-inorganic hybrid foaming body with an increase in the $CaCO_3$ addition amount. Moreover, the apparent density and thermal conductivity were increased when the added amount of $CaCO_3$ increased. Increasing the amount of $CaCO_3$ powder is expected to improve the flame retardant capabilities; however, doing this tends to increase the apparent density and thermal conductivity.

A Study on the Activation Energy and Characteristics of the Heat Decomposition of Flour (밀가루의 열분해 특성과 활성화 에너지에 관한 연구)

  • After examining the characteristics of the heat decomposition of the 80~120mesh flour using the Mini cup pressure vessel test and determining the apparent activation energy in a spontaneous combustion, the conclusion is as follows. The heat decomposition of flour occurs at around $100^{\circ}C$ and the peak for the maximum rise in pressure appears at around $290^{\circ}C$. The decomposition pressure against various temperature in the vessel shows the maximum value of $4.7kg/cm^2$ approximately at $440^{\circ}C$. When the thickness of the sample is 3cm, the maximum temperature and the critical temperature of ignition are $398^{\circ}C$ and $204.5^{\circ}C$, respectively; the critical temperature is $194.5^{\circ}C$ when the thickness of the sample is 5cm, and $182.5^{\circ}C$ when the sample is 7cm. In addition, the apparent velocity calculated using the method of least squares is 35.0407Kcal/mol.

Effect of Blowing Agents on Physical Properties of Polyurethane-polydimethylsiloxane Hybrid Foam

  • In this study, the properties of polyurethane-polydimethylsiloxane (PU-PDMS) hybrid foams containing different types and contents of physical blowing agents (PBAs) were investigated. Two types of blowing agents, namely physical blowing agents and thermally expandable microspheres (TEM), were applied. The apparent density was measured using precisely cut foam samples, and the pore size was measured using image software. In addition, the microstructure of the foam was confirmed via scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The thermal conductivities related to the microstructures of the different foams were compared. When 0.5 phr of the hydrocarbon-based PBA was added, the apparent density and pore size of the foam were minimal; however, the pore size was larger than that of neat foam. In contrast, the addition of 3 phr of TEM effectively reduced both the apparent density and pore size of the PBAs. The increase in resin viscosity owing to TEM could enhance bubble production stability, leading to the formation of more uniform and smaller pores. These results indicate that TEM is a highly efficient PBA that can be employed to decrease the weight and pore size of PU-PDMS hybrid foams.
