Functional Chemical Components in Protaetia brevitarsis Larvae: Impact of Supplementary Feeds

  • The goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of various supplementary feeds on the chemical composition and production of bioactive substances in Protaetia brevitarsis larvae. The primary feed-oak-fermented sawdust-was supplemented with a variety of substances, including aloe, apple, banana, sweet persimmon (S. persimmon) and sweet pumpkin (S. pumpkin). Crude protein and fat content were the highest in the control and S. pumpkin group, respectively. Supplementary feeds increased the content of unsaturated fatty acids, except in the group receiving S. pumpkin, in which oleic acid was the most abundant (58.2%-64.5%). Free essential amino acids in larvae receiving supplementary aloe were higher compared with the control group except for Lys and His. Polyphenol and flavonoid contents and the antioxidant activities of ABTS and DPPH were higher in all treated groups compared with the control group. Although supplementary feeds led to a decreased crude protein content in the treated larvae when compared with the control group, these treatments generally improved the levels of unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidative activity. Therefore, we suggest that among the supplementary foods tested, aloe is a better resource for P. brevitarsis based on crude protein content, free amino acids and other bioactive compounds such as unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants.

미선나무의 저온 추출 공정에 의한 항주름 활성 증진 (Enhancement of Anti-wrinkle Activities of Abeliophyllum distichum Nakai through Low Temperature Extraction Process)

  • Skin anti-wrinkle activities of the stems and leaves of Abeliophyllum distichum Nakai were evaluated by the extracts obtained from various extraction processes such as using hot water at $100^{\circ}C$, 70% ethanol at $85^{\circ}C$, and 70% ethanol with ultrasonication at $60^{\circ}C$ The ultrasonicated extract showed 95.62% of the highest cell viability in addition of $0.3mg/m{\ell}$ of the extracts into the normal human fibroblast cell, CCD-986sk. For antioxidant activities, the extracts using ultrasonicated extract showed the highest DPPH free radical scavenging as 80.27%, followed by 75.88% and 62.44% for the extracts using ethanol extract and water extract. The ultrasonicated extract also showed the highest elastase inhibition activity as 25.32%, compared to ethanol extract and water extract based method at 22.01% and 12.88%, respectively. MMP-1 production was most effectively decreased down to $2908.1pg/m{\ell}$ with ultrasonicated extract while $6640.8pg/m{\ell}$ with water extract and $3609.3pg/m{\ell}$ with ethanol extract, in addition of $0.3mg/m{\ell}$. Collagen production was increased up to $154.7ng/m{\ell}$ in addition of ultrasonicated extract, and followed by $121.4ng/m{\ell}$ and $31.2ng/m{\ell}$ for ethanol extract and water extract, respectively. These results indicate that the ethanol extract should have skin anti-wrinkling activities and can be improved by the ultrasonication process that high energy input elute more amounts of bioactive substances eluting more amounts of bioactive substances from the high energy input of ultrasonication.

DLPC Liposome에 미치는 도라지 추출성분의 비타민 C 첨가에 의한 항산화력 상승효과 (Enhancement of Antioxidation Effect of Platycodon grandiflorum with Vitamin C on the DLPC Liposomes)

  • 본 연구는 불포화 인지질인 DLPC liposome에 도라지(Platycodon grandiflorum A. DC, PG)의 용매별 분획물 일정 량을 가하고, 산화제 benzoyl peroxide를 가한 후 시료의 항산화 작용을 비교 분석하였다. 도라지 용매별 추출물 중 ethylether 분획물인 PGMEE와 ethylacetate 분획물인 PGMEA는 $\alpha$-tocopherol의 경우 보다 훨씬 그 산화지수가 낮아두 분획물에 의한 강한 항산화력을 측정할 수 있었으며, 잘알려진 강력한 항산화제인 BHT(butylated hydroxytoluence)의 경우와 비슷한 항산화 효과를 나타내었다. 한편 PGMEE 분획층에 비타민 C를 일정량을 첨가함으로서 상호 보강 작용에 의한 항산화 상승효과를 본 결과, Vit C를 첨가하지 않았을 때보다 산화지수가 횔씬 낮아졌다. BHT 함유의 DLPC liposome의 경우도 Vit C에 의한 비슷한 추과를 나타내었다. 이상의 결과에 의하여 도라지의 PGMEE 분획층에는 BHT와 비슷한 강한 항산화 효과를 가진 물질의 존재가 분명하다고 사료되며 비타민 C 첨가로 인한 항산화 상승 효과도 본 연구결과에 의해 뚜렷이 알 수 있었다. 이와 같은 연구에 의해 여러 질병들의 원인이 될 뿐만 아니라 세포막 손상을 일으키는 활성 산소 또는 유리기의 생성억제 등 균형된 식생활을 통한 식품 섭취의 중요성이 매우크다고 인식되며 특히 식품으로서 애용되고 있는 도라지의 인지질 세포막에 미치는 항산화 효과가 식품으로서 약이 되는 기전 규명에 기초자료가될 것을 바라는 바이다.

복분자 딸기 열매의 품종별 기능성 성분 및 항산화 활성 (Functional Composition and Antioxidant Activity from the Fruits of Rubus coreanus according to Cultivars)

  • 품종별에 따른 복분자 딸기 열매의 항산화 활성 및 기능성 성분 함량을 비교 분석하였다. 우수한 품종으로 개발한 정금 1, 2, 3, 4, 5호(10년생)와 도입종 블랙베리(Rubus fructicosus)를 사용하였다. DPPH법을 이용한 항산화 활성은 2 mg/㎖ 농도에서 46.58에서 78.55% 범위에 있었으며, 이 중 정금 1호의 항산화 활성이 우수하였다. 총 페놀 함량과 비타민 C 함량 및 안토시아닌 중 베리류의 대표성분인 cyanidin 3-glucoside의 함량을 측정한 결과 정금 1호가 다른 품종에 비해 우수한 결과를 나타내었다.

Evaluation of Antioxidative Activity of Various Levels of Ethanol Extracted Tomato Powder and Application to Pork Patties

  • This study was performed to evaluate antioxidant activity of tomato powder extracted by various concentrations of ethanol (0, 25, 50, 75, 100%) and to evaluate the physicochemical properties and antioxidant activities of pork patties with ethanol extracted tomato (EET) powder. No differences in the contents of total of individual phenolic compounds including gallic acid and catechin, were observed among the treatments (p>0.05). Among the various concentrations, 50% and 75% EET powder showed the highest free radical scavenging and iron chelating activities (p<0.05). Lipid peroxidation was retarded in linoleic acid emulsion with the addition of 50% and 75% EET powder (0.1%). Based on the model study, five pork patties were actually manufactured; control patty, reference patty with 0.01% of butylated hydroxytoluene, patty with 1% of water extracted tomato (WET), and patties with 0.5 and 1.0% of EET. Addition of 1% WET and EET decreased pH value, and increased redness values of pork patties, as compared to the control (p<0.05). Pork patties with WET (1.0%) and EET (0.5% and 1.0%) had lower 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances values compared with control patties after 7 d of storage (p<0.05). Pork patties containing EET powder showed lower total bacterial and Enterobacteriaceae counts than control patties (p<0.05). In conclusion, WET and EET (50%) could be used as a natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agent in meat products.

Composition of Biologically Active Substances and Antioxidant Activity of New Zealand Deer Velvet Antler Extracts

  • Deer velvet antler was subjected to the extraction process using boiling water at three different temperatures (100, 110 and $120^{\circ}C$) and 70% ethanol solution. Functional components such as uronic acid, sulfated-glycosaminoglycans (sulfated-GAGs) and sialic acid in the extracts were analyzed, and their antioxidant activities were investigated using several in vitro models. Uronic acid and sulfated-GAGs content of each extract significantly decreased with increasing extraction temperature (p<0.05), while the residues obtained from the upper and middle part of the antler had a higher uronic acid content than the residues obtained from the base section. Sialic acid contents were highest in compounds extracted at $110^{\circ}C$, followed by 120 and $100^{\circ}C$. The 70% ethanol extracts also had a high levels of uronic acid content, but not for sulfated-GAGs and sialic acid. All extracts showed good antioxidant ability in a dose-dependant manner, with the $100^{\circ}C$ residue exhibiting the strongest activity compared to the 110 and $120^{\circ}C$ extracts. In relation to the hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and reduction power, the 70% ethanol extract exhibited the strongest activity. Furthermore, the velvet antler extracts inhibited apoptosis in hydrogen peroxide-induced PC-12 cells.

야생 복숭아나무 추출물의 항산화 및 항염증 효과 (Antioxidant and Antiinflammation Activities of Prunus persica Tree Extracts)

  • 인류의 수명이 연장되고 노령화 사회로 발전됨에 따라 다양한 성인병이 야기되고 있고, 이들 성인병의 원인이 활성산소에 의한 것으로 밝혀짐에 따라 다양한 성인병을 예방 치료할 수 있는 안전하고 우수한 항산화 및 항염증 물질을 천연물로부터 개발하기 위한 연구의 일환으로 자생식물의 하나인 야생복숭아 가지에 대하여 그들의 MeOH 엑스를 필두로 한 분획물 엑스를 대상으로 항산화 및 항염증 효과를 조사하였다. DPPH 법을 사용하여 야생복숭아 가지의 분획물 엑스에 대한 1차 라디칼 소거작용 검색 시험을 한 결과 야생복숭아 가지 의 n-BuOH 엑스와 EtOAc 엑스가 가장 강한 항산화 활성을 나타내었다. 1차 실험에서 얻어진 결과를 토대로 야생복숭아에 대하여 보다 상세한 항산화 효과를 검토하기 위하여 Ferric-Thiocyanate 법을 이용한 지질 과산화 억제작용 시험한 결과 야생복숭아 가지 의 EtOAc 엑스가 천연 항산화제인 tocopherol 및 합성 항산화제인 BHA 보다 우수한 탁월한 항산화 효과를 나타내었고, Rancimat법에 의한 지질 산패 억제 실험을 실시한 결과 또한 야생복숭아 가지의 EtOAc 엑스가 tocopherol보다 우수하고 BHA보다는 약간 우수한 강력한 지질 산패 억제 효과를 보였다. Hyaluronidase 저해에 의한 항염증 효과 시험에서는 항산화 실험에서 전반적으로 우수한 항산화 효과를 보인 야생복숭아 가지의 EtOAc 엑스가 ketoprofen보다는 약하나 ibuprofen과 indomethacin보다는 우수한 항염증 효과를 나타내었다. 이상의 실험 결과는 야생복숭아의 항산화 및 항염증 효과의 활성 주성분 분획은 EtOAc 엑스임을 시사하였다.

식이에 첨가한 Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)가 만성적으로 알코올을 섭취한 쥐에서 간조직의 항산화 체계에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Dietary Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) on Antioxidant System in the Liver of Chronically Ethanol-Treated Rats)

  • The study was designed to observe antioxidant activities of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) by determining antioxidant enzyme protein levels [cytochrome P4502 El (CYP2E1), Copper, Zinc-superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD), glutathione peroxidase (CSH-Px), glutathione S-transferase (GST)] by Western blot analysis and the levels of ${\alpha}$-tocopherol and 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in the liver of chronically ethanol-treated rats. Sixty Sprague Dawley male rats were divided into 3 groups (Control, EtOH, EtOH+CLA). All rats were fed Lieber-DeCarli liquid diet for 4 weeks by pair-feeding against the EtOH group. The liquid diet was supplemented with 1.77g CLA mixture per kg diet in the EtOH+CLA group. Isocaloric maltose dextrin was added in replace of 50g ethanol (36%kcal) for the Control group. Ethanol ingestion significantly increased the levels of CYP2E1 protein and TBARS, but significantly reduced CuZn-SOD protein level and increased GST protein level. There was no significant effect on the level of GSH-Px protein and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol in the liver by ethanol. CLA supplementation with ethanol significantly increased the levels of CuZn-SOD, GSH-Px and GST and also significantly attenuated TBARS level, whereas there was no significant effect on the levels of CYP2E1 protein and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol by CLA. Overall, the CLA supplemented to ethanol could significantly increase the levels of CuZn-SOD, GSH-Px and GST proteins and reduce the level of TBARS in the liver of chronically ethanol-treated rats.

매실(Prunus mume)의 항산화성 (The Antioxidant Activity of Maesil (Prunus mume))

  • 매실의 항산화력을 알아보기 위해 매실과육과 매실즙 및 이들의 수용성 추출물을 시료로 하여 과산화물가, TBA가 및 전자공여능을 측정하였다. 과산화물가는 저장 4주 후 매실과즙 추출물의 경우 226.55 meq/kg으로 항산화제로 알려져 있는 BHT(217.38meq/kg) 및 ascorbic acid(223.32meq/kg)와 유사한 값을 나타내 이들과 유사한 항산화력을 갖는 것으로 분석되었다. TBA가를 통해 항산화력을 측정한 결과 합성산화제인 BHT가 45.35%로 가장 높은 항산화력을 보였고 매실과즙 추출물은 25.0%,로 29.94%를 나타낸 ascorbic acid와 유사한 수준의 값을 나타내었다. DPPH를 이용한 전자공여능을 측정한 결과 0.01% 매실과육 추출물은 34.84%, 0.01% 매실과즙 추출물 43.50%를 보였으며 0.02% 매실과육 추출물은 53.21%, 0.02% 매실과즙 추출물은 59.19%로 증가하는 양상을 나타내었으나 BHT(77.82%)와 ascorbic acid(96.69%)에 비해 낮은 활성을 나타내었다. 이상의 결과로 볼 때 매실과즙 추출물의 경우 BHT와 ascorbic acid와 유사한 항산화성을 나타내 천연 항산화제로의 이용 가능성이 있다고 생각되어진다.

Evaluation of Various Packaging Systems on the Activity of Antioxidant Enzyme, and Oxidation and Color Stabilities in Sliced Hanwoo (Korean Cattle) Beef Loin during Chill Storage

  • The effects of various packaging systems, vacuum packaging (VACP), medium oxygen-modified atmosphere packaging (50% $O_2/20%$ $CO_2/30%$ $N_2$, MOMAP), MOMAP combined with vacuum skin packaging (VSP-MOMAP), high oxygen-MAP (80% $O_2/20%$ $CO_2/30%$ $N_2$, HOMAP), and HOMAP combined with VSP (VSP-HOMAP), on the activity of antioxidant enzyme, and oxidation and color stabilities in sliced Hanwoo (Korean cattle) beef loin were investigated at $4^{\circ}C$ for 14 d. Higher (p<0.05) superoxide dismutase activity and total reducing ability were maintained in VSP-MOMAP beef than in HOMAP beef. Lipid oxidation (2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, TBARS) was significantly (p<0.05) retarded in MOMAP, VSP-MOMAP, and VSP-HOMAP beef compared with HOMAP beef. Production of nonheme iron content was lower (p<0.05) in VSP-MOMAP beef than in HOMAP beef. Red color ($a^*$) was kept higher (p<0.05) in VSP-MOMAP beef compared with MOMAP, HOMAP, and VSP-HOMAP beef. However, VACP beef was found to have the most positive effects on the antioxidant activity, oxidation and red color stabilities among the various packaged beef. These findings suggested that VSP-MOMAP was second to VACP in improving oxidation and color stabilities in sliced beef loin during chill storage.
