Antibacterial and deodorization properties of silk fabrics dyed with Sappan wood are investigated by Halo, Shake flask, Bioassay and Detection column methods. The results are obtained as follows; 1. Although K/S values increase with Al mordant and concentrate concentrations, these are decreased in 10% Al mordant concentration in case of 4mlg dye concentration. 2. Reduction ratios of bacteria increase with K/S values in various tests. 3. When undyed silk fabrics are treated with Al mordant, reduction ratios of bacteria are not varied with Al mordant concentrations. 4. Deodorization property of Al pre-mordanted dyeing silk fabrics is better than one of unmordanted dyeing and raw silk fabrics. 5. Antibacterial properties of Cu and Cr mordanted dyeing fabrics are better than ones of the dyeing fabrics treated with the other mordants. 6. Natural dyes extracted from Sappan wood show the good antibacterial and deodorization properties, and colorant among various components contained in Sappan wood has a excellent antibacterial and deodorization properties.
Pterocarpus marsupium, Clitoria ternatea, and Sanseveiria cylindrica are some of the important and endangered medicinal plant species of India. Despite of medicinal properties, antibacterial potential of the plants have not yet been explored. The present study was designed to optimize the in vitro technique for micropropagation and to screen the extracts from leaves and in vitro raised calli for antibacterial properties. Excised leaf-explants from the parent plants were surface sterilized and cultivated on Murashige & Skoog's (MS) medium containing $N^6$-benzyladenine (BA) in concentrations of 1, 2, 5, and $10{\mu}M$. Optimal growth of calli was noticed at a concentration of $5{\mu}M$, therefore the extracts from calli grown at this concentration were further studied for antibacterial activity. Both alcoholic and aqueous extracts from leaves of respective plants, and their in vitro raised calli were tested for antibacterial activity by agar well diffusion method against a range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Aqueous extracts showed antibacterial activity against limited number of bacterial species; notably the extracts of C. ternatea which showed antibacterial activity against Streptococcus pyogenes, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus. Alcoholic extracts of all three plants showed antibacterial activity against a wider range of bacteria. Among the Gram-positive bacteria, extracts from C. ternatea showed strong antibacterial activity against Bacillus spp., whereas the extracts of S. cylindrica showed good antibacterial potential for Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis and S. pyogenes. The extracts from all three plants showed antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria, including, Salmonella spp. and Shigella dysenteriae; organisms causing enteric fever and dysentery. In most of the cases, the extracts from respective calli showed comparable, and in some cases better, result in comparison to the extracts from parent leaves. To the best of our knowledge this is the first preliminary report on antibacterial potential, especially through calli extracts, of these plants; and in vitro cultivation of the explants may be used to obtain phytotherapeutic compounds.
Preparation of antibacterial biopolymer film which is suitable for food packaging film was investigated using K-carrageenan as a base material. K-Carrageenan showed good biodegradability and film-forming characteristic but poor mechanical properties under humid condition. Also, various bacteria grew well on its surface. The poor mechanical properties could be improved by mixing with alginate at a 1:1 ratio and crosslinking with $CaCl_2$ solution. Antibacterial property coul be provided by modifying the K-carrageenan film surface with acrylic acid plasma followed by ion-exchange with $Ag^+$ ions. Such prepared film still showed good biodegradability by various fongi.
The treatment of alkylated nitro derivatives of indazole with 2-(4-chlorophenyl)acetonitrile under basic conditions gave the new 8-chloro-3-alkyl-3H-pyrazolo[4,3-a]acridine-11-carbonitriles via the nucleophilic substitution of hydrogen which proceeds at room temperature with concomitant cyclisation in fairly good yields. The structures of all newly synthesized compounds were confirmed by IR, $^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR and mass spectral data. Fluorescence experimental results of all newly synthesized compounds revealed remarkable photoluminescence properties and strong green fluorescence properties. Also, the new compounds exhibited potent antibacterial activity and their antibacterial activity (MIC) against Gram positive (Staphylococcuse aureus methicillin resistant S. aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and negative bacterial (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) species were determined.
Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the mechanical properties and antibacterial effects on Streptococcus mutans of composite resins containing phytoncide. Methods: Phytoncide was mixed with commercial composite resins at 0 (control), 1.25, 2.5, 3.75, and 5.0 weight percentage (wt%). Mechanical properties related to composite resins such as surface hardness, depth of cure, and flexural strength were measured. Antibacterial effects of composite resins were analyzed by using Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175). The results were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey's test (p<0.05). Results: Composite resins that contain low wt% of phytoncide demonstrated no significant difference in surface hardness, depth of cure, and flexural strength (p>0.05). However, composite resins that contain high wt% of phytoncide had significantly decreased mechanical properties (p<0.05). In terms of antibacterial effects, composite resins containing phytoncide inhibited the growth of S. mutans. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that novel composite resins containing phytoncide have effective antibacterial properties while maintaining the originally important mechanical features of composite resins.

CuSn thin films were fabricated by rf magnetron co-sputtering method on the Si(100) substrate for evaluation of the antibacterial effect. The co-sputtering process was performed with different rf powers and sputtering times to regulate the thickness of the films and relative atomic ratio of Cu to Sn. The physicochemical properties of the CuSn thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray induced Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES), Optical microscope (OM), 4-point probe, and antibacterial test. An antibacterial test was conducted with Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) as changing contact times between CuSn fillms and bacteria suspension. We compared to the crystalline structures of films before sterilization and after sterilization by XRD measurement. The changes of oxidation states of Cu and Sn and the chemical environment of films before and after antibacterial test were investigated with high resolution XPS spectra in the regions of Cu 2p, Cu LMM, and Sn 3d. After antibacterial test, the morphology of the films was checked with an OM images. The electrical properties of the CuSn films such as surface resistance and conductivity were measured by using 4-point probe.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the dyeing-property and antibacterial activity on nylon fabric dyed with cochineal at variable dyeing conditions. Al, Cr, Fe, Cu and Sn were used as mordants and adsorption was compared with different mordanting methods. The maximum UV-visible absorption band of cochineal extract was 495 nm. The dyeability on nylon fabric was good because of having a amine group. The optimum dyeing conditions of nylon fabrics are dyeing concentration 1.5%(o.w.s), dyeing temperature $60^{\circ}C$, pH 3 and dyeing time 30 minutes. The pre-mordanting method is preferred for Al and Cr, and the post-mordanting one is preferred for Cu, Sn and Fe to achieve better dyeing. The optimum mordanting conditions of wool fabrics dyed with cochineal are mordanting concentration of 0.5%(o.w.s), mordanting temperature $60^{\circ}C$, and dyeing time 30 minutes. Nylon fabrics dyed with cochineal show a little antibacterial activity, but it was increased by Sn mordanting. MIC test results in antibacterial activities revealed that the antibacterial activity of Cu was the highest among mordants, but Sn mordant was the most effective in antibacterial activities after mordanting treatment of nylon fabric. The fastness properties of dyed nylon fabric showd a little worse or a similar level and there was no significant difference between a mordanted and non-mordanted fabric.
The physical and antibacterial properties of ophthalmic lenses fabricated by copolymerization with hydrogel monomers using two types of graphene were measured, and their usability as contact lens materials was analyzed. For polymerization, silicone monomers, including SID-OH, 3-(methacryloxy)propyl tris(trimethylsiloxy)silane, and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane, were used, and N,N-dimethylacetamide, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a crosslinking agent, and azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator were added. Also, graphene oxide nanoparticle (GON) and graphene nanoplate (GNP) were used as an additive, and the physical properties of the lenses fabricated after copolymerization were evaluated. The fabricated lenses satisfied the basic physical properties of general hydrogel contact lenses and showed the characteristics of lenses with high water content, and the disadvantage of very weak durability, due to low tensile strength. However, it was confirmed that the tensile strength and antibacterial properties were greatly improved by adding GON and GNP. With GON, the oxygen permeability and refractive index of the fabricated lenses were slightly improved. Therefore, it was determined that the graphene materials used in this study can be used in various ways as a contact lens material.

Traditional ceramic glazes formulated with copper oxide (CuO) exhibited antibacterial properties on Staphylococcus aureus (Gram Positive) and Escherichia coli (Gram Negative). All the ceramic glazes containing CuO showed antibacterial behavior when fired in reducing atmosphere. However, some of copper glazes presented antibacterial behavior and had no antibacterial properties at all when sintered in an oxidizing atmosphere. To elucidate the antibacterial mechanism, ceramic glazes were studied for phase and microstructure analysis, dissolution behavior and surface zeta potential. Metallic copper was precipitated in the glaze layer when sintered in reducing atmosphere. Less than 0.05 ppm of Cu ion was dissolved from glazes. Ca ion was most dissolved among all the samples. Glaze surface was highly negatively charged when CuO was added over 3 wt.% regardless of the sintering atmosphere. The antibacterial behavior of ceramic glazes seemed to be directly related to the dissolution behavior of cations, but the antibacterial behavior of oxidized specimens was not explained by the dissolution behavior. Surface potential of ceramic glazes appeared to play an auxiliary role in antibacterial properties.

In this study, antibacterial glasses were developed by the addition of CaO in ZnO-Na2O-B2O3-SiO2 glass system. The effect of the addition of CaO on the thermal properties, dissolution properties, surface zeta potential and antibacterial activity were analyzed. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) analysis was performed to analyze the thermophysical properties of 30ZnO-xCaO-20Na2O-30B2O3-(20-x)SiO2 (x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 mol%). It was confirmed that the glass transition temperature decreased as the CaO content increased. The amount of released Zn2+ ions and surface zeta potential of glass samples increased with increasing CaO concentration. For these reasons, the antibacterial activity was dramatically improved. By the addition of CaO, we could successfully develop an antibacterial glass with 99.9 % antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
