Evaluation of Anti-Sapstain Activity of Rice Powder Adhesives Modified with Wood Preservatives

  • Demand of natural interior finishing material has been widely sprayed in nowadays because many weak people as children, pregnant women, and elder people are being struggled with sick house syndrome due to volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde, toluene, benzene, etc. Our research group developed a no-added formaldehyde adhesive for wood-based panels from mainly rice powder and some additives in the previous study for abating sick house syndrome. Since the rice powder adhesive provides a good source of nutrients with microorganisms, it was suspected a susceptibility of the rice powder adhesive to fungal and sapstain attack. We evaluated anti-sapstain activity of the rice powder adhesives modified by adding wood preservatives. We modified the rice powder adhesive by adding three different types of anti-sapstain preservatives at three different concentrations to assess their anti-sapstin activity. The bonding strengths of the modified rice powder adhesives were still outstanding performance on all samples. Moreover, the plywood manufactured with the modified rice powder adhesive satisfied outdoor use requirement for ordinary plywood (KS F3101, Korean Standard). The results obtained showed that at least 3% of preservative should be added to the rice powder adhesive to obtain effective anti-sapstain activity.

Anti-inflammatory Activity of 3,6,3'-Trihydroxyflavone in Mouse Macrophages, In vitro

  • Numerous studies have examined the role of flavonoids in modulating inflammatory responses in vitro. In this study, we found a novel flavonoid, 3,6,3'-trihydroxyflavone (1), with anti-inflammatory effects. Anti-inflammatory activity and mechanism of action were examined in mouse macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Our results showed that the anti-inflammatory effects of 1 are mediated via p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK), Jun-N terminal kinase (JNK), and the extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Binding studies revealed that 1 had a high binding affinity to JNK1 ($1.568{\times}10^8M^{-1}$) and that the 3- and 6-hydroxyl groups of the C-ring and A-ring of 1 participated in hydrogen bonding interactions with the side chains of Asn114 and Lys55, respectively. The oxygen at the 3' position of the B-ring formed a hydrogen bond with side chain of Met111. Therefore, 1 could be a potential inhibitor of JNKs, with potent anti-inflammatory activity.

나린진(naringin)이 함유된 소프트 콘택트렌즈에서 나린진의 용출 특성 (Elution Properties of Naringin from Soft Contact Lens Containing Naringin)

  • 목적: 본 연구는 천연항균물질인 나린진을 소프트 콘택트렌즈 수지용액에 첨가하여 소프트 콘택트렌즈를 제조하고, 제조된 콘택트렌즈에서 용출된 용액의 광학적 특성과 나린진의 물리화학적인 상태 그리고 식염수에서의 용출 특성 등에 대해 살펴보고자 하였다. 방법: 나린진이 첨가된 콘택트렌즈는 벌크(bulk)중합 방식을 이용하여 제조하였고, 제조된 나린진이 첨가된 콘택트렌즈에서 나린진의 결합상태와 식염수로의 나린진 용출과정, 그리고 시간에 따른 나린진의 용출량 등은 적외선 스펙트럼(IR spectrum)과 고성능 액체 크로마토그래피(HPLC)를 이용하여 살펴보았다. 결과: 나린진이 첨가된 콘택트렌즈에서 나린진의 용출은 일정농도를 유지하면서 약 1개월 동안 지속되었고, 용출된 나린진은 첨가하기 전과 동일한 구조를 유지하고 있었으며 투과율과 같은 광학적 특성 변화는 관찰할 수 없었다. IR spectrum과 HPLC 결과로부터 콘택트렌즈 내에서 나린진의 구조와 결합상태를 확인하였다. 결론: 나린진이 첨가된 콘택트렌즈에서 나린진은 폴리머 분자와 반데르발스(van der Waals) 인력이나 나린진 분자의 수산기 (hydroxyl group)와 약한 수소결합(hydrogen bonding)에 의해 상호 결합되어 있는 것으로 판단되었다. 나린진이 첨가된 콘택트렌즈로부터 나린진은 약 1개월 동안 일정농도씩 꾸준히 용출되었으며 1개월 후에도 하루 동안 용출된 나린진의 농도가 약 10 ppm으로 나타나 일정기간 동안 항균력의 유지가 지속적으로 필요한 소프트 콘택트렌즈의 제조에 나린진을 첨가하는 방법이 매우 효과적임을 알 수 있었다.

How Do South Koreans Perceive Corporate Social Capital and Its Benefits? An Application to Corporations and Community

  • A recent public opinion survey found that the anti-corporate sentiment of South Korean citizens is primarily due to the misbehavior of Korean corporations. South Korean citizens' skepticism of corporations may hinder the democratic and economic development of the country. As a driving force for community development, social capital is considered to enable citizens to collaborate with one another to resolve a shared problem. Specifically, this study pays attention to the relationship among social capital, corporate capacity, and trust, which may perhaps contribute to developing a democratic environment in Korean society. The study aims to explore whether Korean citizens' perceived corporate bonding and bridging social capital affect corporate capacity for collaborative action and trust in corporations. A Web survey of 385 South Koreans was conducted. The findings show that perceived bonding social capital among employees is positively related to corporate capacity for collaboration action. Moreover, perceived bonding among employees and bridging social capital between employees and local residents are positively related to corporate capacity for collaboration action and trust in corporations. These findings suggest that researchers and practitioners for organizational development and community-building need to enhance corporate social capital.

초소수성 발수제를 사용한 모르타르 표면의 결빙 방지 효과 (Anti-freezing effect of mortar surface with superhydrophobic water repellent)

  • In order to examine the adhesion characteristics of road pavement according to environmental conditions, the freezing time of cement mortar and the adhesion performance between ice and pavement were evaluated depending on the presence or absence of polymer and water repellent. As a result of measuring the ice formation time, it was found that there was no delay when a polymer was added, but the complete freezing time was delayed when a water repellent was added. As a result of measuring the strength of ice adhesion, it was found that the bonding force between ice and the surface of the test body was greatly generated in the test body without water repellent. In the case of a test specimen to which a water repellent was added, it was found that the bonding strength between the test specimen surface and ice was reduced.

연료전지 산소환원반응 향상 위한 백금 촉매의 구조적 특성: 밀도범함수이론 연구 (Fundamental Mechanisms of Platinum Catalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Fuel Cell: Density Functional Theory Approach)

  • 연료전지에서의 전체 반응 속도는 산화전극에서 일어나는 수소산화반응에 비해 그 반응 속도가 현저히 느린 환원전극에서의 산소환원반응(oxygen reduction reaction, ORR)에 의해 결정된다. ORR 효율성 평가를 용이하게 하는 지표(descriptor)로서 촉매 표면에서의 산소원자 흡착강도를 활용하는데, 산소흡착강도는 촉매 표면의 기하학적 구조 변형에 따른 전자구조를 변형함으로써 조절할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 백금 표면의 원자모델을 이용하여 표면의 기하학적 구조가 산소흡착강도에 미치는 영향과 그 원인을 밀도범함수이론(density functional theory, DFT) 계산을 통해 분석하였다. 먼저, 기하학적 구조를 인위적으로 변형시킨 Pt(111) 표면에서의 산소흡착반응을 밀도범함수이론 계산을 이용해 분석함으로써 기하학적 구조변화가 산소흡착강도에 미치는 영향(strain effect)을 확인하였다. 최적화한 Pt 격자상수($3.977{\AA}$)에 ${\pm}1%$ 간격의 변화율을 적용하고 각 변화율마다의 산소흡착강도를 계산하였는데, Pt-Pt 원자 간 거리가 멀어질수록 산소흡착강도가 강해지는 것을 확인하였다. 이는 원자 간 거리가 증가할수록 d-band center가 페르미 준위(Fermi level)쪽으로 이동하게 되며, 이로써 일부 반결합 오비탈(anti-bonding orbitals)에 전자가 채워지지 않기 때문에 전체적으로 반결합 오비탈이 형성될 가능성이 적어지기 때문이다. 결과적으로, 순수한 백금이 가진 격자상수($3.9771{\AA}$) 보다 약 2~4% 작은 백금 표면 격자크기를 가질 수 있도록 유도할 수 있다면 산소흡착강도가 적절히 약하게 조절될 수 있으며, 이는 순수한 백금보다 더 향상된 ORR 성능을 가진 촉매물질 개발 연구를 위한 기초자료로서 활용할 수 있을 것이다.

Fabrication and separation performance of polyethersulfone/sulfonated TiO2 (PES-STiO2) ultrafiltration membranes for fouling mitigation

  • Polyethersulfone (PES)/sulfonated $TiO_2$ ($STiO_2$) nanoparticles (NPs) UF blended membranes were fabricated with different loadings of $STiO_2$. The modified membranes exhibited significant improvement in surface roughness, porosity, and pore size when compared to the PES membrane. The $P-STiO_2$ 1 and $P-TiO_2$ 1 blended membranes exhibited higher water flux, approximately 102.4% and 62.6%, respectively, compared to PES. SPP-$STiO_2$ and $P-STiO_2$ showed lower Rir fouling resistance than the $P-TiO_2$ blended membrane. Overall, the $STiO_2$-blended membranes provide high hydrophilicity permeability, anti-fouling performance, and improved BSA rejection attributed to the hydrogen bonding force and more electrostatic repulsion properties of $STiO_2$.

Silane Coupling제로 표면 처리된 ATO 나노입자를 이용하여 제조된 대전방지 ATO/EPOXY 복합체의 코팅 물성 (Properties of Static Dissipative Epoxy Composites Loaded with Silane Coupled-ATO Nanoparticles)

  • For purpose of anti-static film remaining unchanged in the condition of $160^{\circ}C$, organic solvent, acid and base solution $0.01\sim0.03{\mu}m$ particles of Sb doped tin oxide(ATO) were grafted by 3-Glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane(GPTS) for improving interfere bonding force between ATO and epoxy resin. The particles were dispersed in 2-methoxyethanol with YD-I28(Bisphenol A type epoxy resin, Kukdo chemical) and 1-imidazole as hardener. The anti-static solutions were coated on PI film as thickness of $0.1{\mu}m$. Surface resistivity of anti-static film containing conductive polymer became $10^{12}\Omega/\Box$ after 32 hours in $160^{\circ}C$. The surface resistivity of ATO grafted by GPTS / Epoxy coating layer remained as $10^{7.6}\Omega/\Box$ in $160^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. ATO grafted by GPTS / Epoxy coating layer coated on PI film was dipped in acetone for 7 days. The surface resistivity remained unchanged as $10^{7.6}\Omega/\Box$. The anti-static layer dipped in water solutions containing each KOH 10 wt % and $H_2SO_4$ 2 wt% was ultra-sonicated for 10 minutes per once until 30th. The surface resistance of anti-static layer containing ATO grafted by GPTS remained unchanged.

쌍롤법에 의한 Al-Sn합금 Strip의 제조 및 특성에 관한 연구 (A Stud on the Fabrication and Characteristics of Al-Sn Alloy Strips by Twin-Roll Process)

  • Twin-roll process is a relatively new continuous casting process which can produce high-quality strip products directly, and solidification rate can reach $10^3$ to $10^4$ K/s, leading to fine and uniform microstructures with enhanced mechanical properties. The strip casting condition for producing fine Al-Sn alloy strip was obtained experimentally, and defects appearing on the strip was examined. Crack formation and surface quality of the strip was found to depend mainly on process parameters such as melt temperature, roller gap and rolling speed. Sn structure of network type was observed in Al-20Sn and Al-40Sn alloy strips, and cell spacing of Al-40Sn alloy was smaller than that of Al-20Sn. Banding strength of the heat treated specimens increased with increasing of soaking time and temperature, and bonding strength of Al-20Sn alloy was more superior than that of Al-40Sn alloy. However wear resistance of Al-40Sn alloy contained large amount of soft Sn which possess good anti-friction characteristics was superior than that of Al-20Sn alloy.

Synthesis, Antioxidant and Molecular Docking Studies of (-)-Catechin Derivatives

  • 12 kinds of (-)-catechin derivatives were designed and synthesized. The catechin derivatives were evaluated their antioxidant activities using DPPH method. Most of them showed good antioxidant activity, particularly compounds 1d, 1e and 1j exhibited more activity than butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Molecular docking studies for compounds 1d, 1e and 1j with STAT1 showed not only sufficent characteristics binding cavity but also agreement with the observed biological activity. Acording to docking results, the compounds showed greater than hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions, electrostatic interactions, and Van der Waals interactions as compared to the reference compound. They formed hydrogen bonds with important residues such as Lys566, His568, Leu570, and Phe644. The compounds showed a novel hydrogen bonding interaction with Arg649, which was not reported previously. Our results might suggest the compounds could serve as a novel anti-oxidant agent.
