  • The oxide films formed on etched aluminum foils play an important role as dielectric layers in aluminum electrolytic capacitors. $Y_2O_3$-doped $ZrO_2$ (YZ) films were coated on the etched aluminum foils by sol-gel dip coating, and the electrical properties of YZ-coated Al foils were characterized. YZ films annealed at $450^{\circ}C$ were crystallized into a cubic phase, and as the $Y_2O_3$ doping content increased, the unit cell of $ZrO_2$ expanded and the grain size decreased. The etch pits of Al foils were filled by YZ sol when it dried at atmospheric pressure after repeating for several times, but this step could essentially be avoided when being dried in a vacuum. YZ-coated foils indicated that the specific capacitance and dissipation factor were $2-2.5{\mu}F/cm^2$ and 2-4 at 1 kHz, respectively, and the leakage current and withstanding voltage of films approximately 200 nm thick were $5{\times}10^{-4}A$ at 21 V and 22 V, respectively. After being anodized at 500 V, the foils exhibited a specific capacitance and dissipation factor of $0.6-0.7{\mu}F/cm^2$ and 0.1-0.2, respectively, at 1 kHz, while the leakage current and withstanding voltage were $2{\times}10^{-4}-3{\times}10^{-5}A$ at 400 V and 420-450 V, respectively. This suggests that YZ film is a promising dielectric that can be used in high voltage Al electrolytic capacitors.

  • Aluminum alloys have poor corrosion resistance compared to the pure aluminum due to the additive elements. Thus, anodizing technology artificially generating thick oxide films are widely applied nowadays in order to improve corrosion resistance. Anodizing is one of the surface modification techniques, which is commercially applicable to a large surface at a low price. However, most studies up to now have focused on its commercialization with hardly any research on the assessment and improvement of the physical characteristics of the anodized films. Therefore, this study aims to select the optimum temperature of sulfuric electrolyte to perform excellent corrosion resistance in the harsh marine environment through electrochemical experiment in the seawater upon generating porous films by variating the temperatures of sulfuric electrolyte. To fabricate uniform porous film of 5083 aluminum alloy, we conducted electro-polishing under the 25 V at $5^{\circ}C$ condition for three minutes using mixed solution of ethanol (95 %) and perchloric (70 %) acid with volume ratio of 4:1. Afterward, the first step surface modification was performed using sulfuric acid as an electrolyte where the electrolyte concentration was maintained at 10 vol.% by using a jacketed beaker. For anode, 5083 aluminum alloy with thickness of 5 mm and size of $2cm{\times}2cm$ was used, while platinum electrode was used for cathode. The distance between the two was maintained at 3 cm. Anodic polarization test was performed at scan rate of 2 mV/s up to +3.0 V vs open circuit potential in natural seawater. Surface morphology was compared using 3D analysis microscope to observe the damage behavior. As a result, the case of surface modification showed a significantly lower corrosion current density than that without modification, indicating excellent corrosion resistance.

For the second step surface modification process (identical to the step 1), etching was performed using mixture of chromic acid (1.8 wt.%) and phosphoric acid (6 wt.%) at $60^{\circ}C$ temperature for 30 minutes. Anodic polarization test was performed at scan rate of 2 mV/s up to +3.0 V vs open circuit potential in natural seawater. • In order to investigate the fracture behaviors(penetration modes) and resistance to penetration during ballistic impact of surface hardening treated Aluminum, Titanium alloy laminates, ballistic tests were conducted. In this paper, Anodized Al 5083-H131 alloy laminates and nitrified Ti (Gr.2) alloy laminates were used to achieve higher surface hardness. Surface hardness test were conducted using a Micro victor's hardness tester and thickness of surface hardening treated specimens was measured by video microscope. Resistance to penetration is determined by the protection ballistic limit($V_50$), a statistical velocity with 50% probability far complete penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are respectfully observed at and above ballistic limit velocities, as a result of $V_50$ test and Projectile Through Plates (PTP) test methods. PTP tests were conducted with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature using 5.56mm ball projectile. $V_50$ tests with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature were conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests.

  • Icing causes various serious problems, where water vapor or water droplets adhere at cold conditions. Therefore, understanding of ice adhesion on solid surface and technology to reduce de-icing force are essential for surface finishing of metallic materials used in extreme environments and aircrafts. In this study, we controlled wettability of aluminum alloy using anodic oxidation, hydrophobic coating and lubricant-impregnation. In addition, surface porosity of anodized oxide layer was controlled to realize superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity. Then, de-icing force on these surfaces with a wide range of wettability and mobility of water was measured. The results show that the enhanced wettability of hydrophilic surface causes strong adhesion of ice. The hydrophobic coating on the nanoporous anodic oxide layer reduces the adhesion of ice, but the volume expansion of water during the freezing diminishes the effect. The lubricant-impregnated surface shows an extremely low adhesion of ice, since the lubricant inhibits the direct contact between ice and solid surface.

  • Anodic oxide films on aluminum play an important role as a dielectrics in aluminum electrolytic capacitor. In order to obtain the high capacitance, ZrO$_2$ films were coated on aluminum foils by sol-gel method and then, the properties of anodized films were studied. The coating and drying of the films were repeated 4-10 times and annealed at 300~$600^{\circ}C$ and the triple layer of ZrO$_2$/Al-ZrO$_{x}$ /Al$_2$O$_3$ was formed onto aluminum substrates after anodizing of ZrO$_2$/Al film. The thickness of $Al_2$O$_3$ layer was decreased with increasing the annealing temperature due to the densification of ZrO$_2$ film. The ZrO$_2$ films were crystallized even at 30$0^{\circ}C$ and showed nanocrystalline structure. The. capacitance of aluminum foil annealed at low temperature was higher than that at high temperature. The increase of capacitance was due to the high capacitance of ZrO$_2$ film annealed at low temperature. The capacitance of ZrO$_2$ coated aluminum increased about 3 times compared to that without a ZrO$_2$ layer after anodizing to 400 V. From these results, the aluminum foils with composite oxide layers are found to be applicable to the aluminum electrolytic capacitor.

  • A low-cost, simple strip reader system using a linear movement mechanism of CD-ROM deck has been developed to characterize a lateral flow membrane-based immunochromatographic assay. The test strip reader was assembled by a CD-ROM deck and home-made optical head especially designed for immunoassays. The optical head for detecting reflected light from the test strip surface consists of green light-emitting diode, large area silicon photodiode, and anodized aluminum mounting block providing a slit structure for cutting light from the LED. The stepping motor of the deck was operated in the full step mode, whose distance of each reading point is about 0.15mm. The performance of the strip reader was tested by analysis of HBV(hepatitis B virus) antigen test kit. This strip reader can be useful for inexpensive, disposable, and membrane-based assays that provide visual evidence of the presence of an analyte in a liquid sample.

  • Gold-polypyrrole segment nanowires prepared using anodized aluminum oxide templates can be assembled into a curved superstructure that shows stimuli-induced contraction and expansion. The radius of the superstructures can be predicted using the simple equation suggested by J. K. Lim et al. (Nano Lett. 8, 4441 (2008)). The suggested equation, however, is valid only within the limiting condition in that the length of the polypyrrole segment is comparable to, or much longer than the gold segment. In this study, the original equation was modified to a new equation that is valid for all length scales of polypyrrole segments. The radius of the superstructures calculated using the modified equation was compared with the result calculated by the original equation, and the validity of the modified equation is discussed.

  • Polypyrrole-Gold (PPy/Au) segment nanowires are prepared using anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) templates and assembled into a curved superstructure. Since the shape of the obtained superstructures can be designed to be capsule-like with inner space for containing materials, and their openings and closures can be controlled with external stimuli, these structures can be useful for a large variety of applications. Inner space of capsule-like superstructures is an important factor for their applications, and the volume of the inner space can be assessed using the generalized equation suggested by J. K. Lim (Bull. Korean Chem. Soc. 33, 2699 (2012)). In this paper, we introduce a new approach to obtain correct and simplified equation without redundant assumption which was used to induce the previous equations, and recalculate the volume of the inner space in the capsule-like superstructure using a new equation.

  • This paper presents a microfabricated nanowire diluter which dilutes the concentration of nanowires in solution instead of by the conventional centrifuge process. The device has 16 pairs of gold electrodes in a micro channel composed of a glass substrate and PDMS. We prepared nickel nanowires by the template-directed electrodeposition method using nanoporous anodized aluminum template (AAO). We injected the Dimethylformamide (DMF) solution containing nanowires into the inlet of the diluter while applying square wave voltages on the electrodes to trap the nanowires at the subsequent gold electrodes by means of dielectrophoretic attraction forces. The concentration of nanowires at the outlet of the micro channel was changed as we expected, which illustrates that the device can effectively dilute nanowires and can be applied to a controlled assembly of nanowires.
