Biomass and Energy Content of Pinus densiflora Stand in Mt. Wolak, Chungbuk Province (충북 월악산 지역 48년생 소나무림의 바이오매스와 에너지량)

  • This study was conducted to understand the biomass and the energy content of 48-year-old Pinus densiflora stand planted in Mt. Wolak, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea. The total biomass of aboveground was 138.14 ton/ha (87.3 ton/ha from stemwood, 41.43 ton/ha from live brances, and 9.41 ton/ha from leaves). Annual net production (ANP) of aboveground was 10.85 ton/ha/yr, and the ANP of stemwood, live branches, and leaves were 5.3 ton/ha/yr, 2.93 ton/ha/yr, and 2.62 ton/ha/yr, respectively. Energy content of aboveground was 2,981 GJ/ha, and annual energy accumulation was 239 GJ/ha/yr. The leaf area index (LAI) of P. densiflora stand was 6.58.

  • This study was conducted to understand the biomass and the energy content of 36-year-old Pinus rigida stand planted in Mt. Taehwa, Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea. The total biomass of aboveground was 252.0 ton/ha (65.9% from stemwood, 8.9% from stembark, 20.6% from live branches, 1.5% from current leaves, 2.6% from previous leaves, and 0.5% from cones). Annual net production (ANP) of aboveground was 27.4 ton/ha/yr, and the ratio of stemwood, stembark, live branches, current leaves, and cones to ANP of aboveground total, 56.3%, 6.1%, 19.1%, 13.9%, and 4.6%, respectively. Energy content of aboveground was 5,434 GJ/ha, and annual energy accumulation was 597 GJ/ha/yr. Photosynthetic layer of P. rigida was shown at about 5.2 m in height, and maximum needle amount of crown at 11 to 13 m in height.

  • This study was conducted to understand the biomass and the energy content of 24-year-old Pinus koraiensis stand planted in Mt. Wolak, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea. Nine sample trees were selected and harvested for the study. Stem, bark, branches and leaves were weighed respectively with the stratified clipping method, and analyzed for productive structure. The allometric regression equations between dry weight of each component and $D^2H$ were obtained to estimate the total biomass of aboveground (47.0 ton/ha) and other parts (56.5% from stemwood, 9.1% from stembark, 0.5% from current twigs, 18.4% from live branches, 2.6% from current leaves, and 12.9% from previous leaves). Annual net production of aboveground was 6.0 ton/ha/yr, and the ratios of stemwood, stembark, current twigs, live branches, and current leaves to that of aboveground were 49.8%, 7.3%, 3.5%, 18.6%, and 20.8%, respectively. Energy content of aboveground was 1,028 GJ/ha, and annual energy content was 133 GJ/ha/yr. Leaf area index (LAI) of P. koraiensis plantation was 20.2 in Mt. Wolak.

Productive Structure and Net Production of a Larix leptolepis Planatation (낙엽송 인공 조림 임분의 생산구조와 생산성)

  • This study was to investigate the productivity of 24-year-old Larix leptolepis plantation in the Experimental Forest of Chungbuk National University located in Mt. Worak, Chungchungbuk-do, Korea. Eight plots(l0m x l0m) were established in the larch plantation in the 9th compartment. Eight sample trees were selected and cut off. Stem, branches and leaves were weighed respectively with the stratified clipping method, and analyzed for productive structure. The allometric regression equations between dry weight of each component(stem, branches. and needles) and D$^2$H were obtained. The results obtained are summarized as follows; (1) Photosynthetic layer of Larix leptolepis was shown at about 13m in height, and maximum needle amount of crown at 15-l6m in height. (2) The total biomass of aboveground was 186.25tons/ha(86.3% from stem, 9.9% from branches and 3.8% from needles). (3) Annual net production of aboveground was 12.17tons/ ha/yr, and the ratios of stem, branches and needles to that of aboveground, 0.835, 0.12, and 0.045, respectively.

  • This study was to investigate the productivity of 30-year-old Quercus mongolica forest in the Experimental Forest of Seoul National University located in Mt. Taehwa, Kyonggi-do, Korea. Eight sample trees were selected and cut off. Stem, branches and leaves were weighed respectively with the stratified clipping method, and analyzed for productive struts lure. The allometric regression equations between dry weight of each component(stem, branches, and needles) and D$^2$H were obtained. The results obtained are summarized as follows; (1) Photosynthetic layer of Quercus mongolica was shown at about 4m in height, and maximum needle amount of crown at 10m in height. (2) The total biomass of aboveground was 67.886ton/ha(75.5% from stem, 19.4% from branches and 5.1% from needles). (3) Annual net production of aboveground was 12.76ton/ha/yr, and the ratios of stem, branches and needles to that of aboveground, 44.1%, 28.7% and 27.2%, respectively.

  • The productivity and growth pattern of Sargassum confusum (Phaeophyta, Sargassaceae) was investigated in Ohori, east coast of Korea, from March 1983 to April 1984. S. confusum shows an obvious seasonal variation of the growth by passing through the germinative, vegetative, reproductive and decaying phases for about an year. The mean length of tagged individuals shows a positive correlation with the water temperature during the growing period. The growth is depressed at less than 1$0^{\circ}C$ in February, and accelerated at above 15$^{\circ}C$ in May. The rapid growth (1.29 cm/dry) occurs at 15-l8$^{\circ}C$ during May-June and the maximum length is shown at 20-21$^{\circ}C$ in early August. Daily net production estimated by the oxygen light and dark bottle method is 11.2 g C/$m^2$/ day in June. The annual value calculated by the integration of the daily net production, growth rate and biomass is 745 gC/$m^2$/yr. Net production estimated from the biomass change only is 287 gC/$m^2$/yr. But this must be an underestimated value, because the loss of considerable biomass by shedding is not included.

  • The dynamic model was developed to simulate the photosynthetic rate of Phragmites communis stands in coastal ecosystem. The model was composed of the compartments of both climatic and biological variables. The former were photosynthetic photon flux density(PPFD), daily maximum- and minimum-temperature. The latter were combinations of the specific physiological responses of plant organs with the biomass of each organs. The PPFD and air temperature were calculated and using those values, gas exchange rate of each plant organ was calculated at every hour. The carbon budget was constructed using the modelled predictions. Analysis of annual productivity and fluxes showed that yearly gross population productivity, yearly population respiration and yearly net population productivity were 33.4, 21.3 and 12.1 $CO_2ton{\cdot}ha^{-2}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$, respectively. The final result was tested over two stands, produced promising predictions with regards to the levels of production attained. The model can be used to determine production potential under given climatic conditions and could even be applied to plant canopies with analogous biological characteristics.

  • To study tile comparison of aboveground biomass of Pinus rigida Mill. of 18-year-old, plantations located in Whaseong, Yuseong and Wanju district were selected. Ten sample trees in each district selected taking account of DBH distribution were felled carefully to minimize loss of branches and stem analysed by 1m lag segment sectioned from base . The tree height and DBH were measured for sample trees in total growing within $200m^2$ experimental plot. The diagram of oven-dry weight distribution of stem, branch and needle for each 1m segment was constructed. The logarithmic regression equations between dry weight of each component and the two variables, $DBH^2$ and tree height, combined term were presented. The standing crops in the sample stand was estimated to be as much as 23.88, 54.09 and 42.68 tons of dry matter, above ground , per ha in Whaseong, Yuseong anf Wanju district respectively. Annual net production was estimated at 253,657 and 3.65 tons per ha per year respectively. The net assimilation rate was 1.65,1.95 and 1.81 kg/kg/yr in Whaseong, Yuseong and Wanju district respectively. The efficency of leaf to produce stem was 0.99, 1.12 and 1.30 kg/kg/yr respectively.

Annual changes of fisheries production in the shore of Jeonbuk Province, Korea (전북연안 어업자원생산량의 경년변화)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine annual changes of coastal fisheries production in the shore of Jeonbuk Province in Korea. The catch data of an experimental vessel that used dredge nets were used to study fish species and catch per unit of fishing effort carried out from April 2002 to November 2004. The total number of fish species caught in 2002 was 23, and 15 in 2004. Total number of individuals were 6,008 and their total weight was 376.38 kg in 2002. In 2004, total number of fishes was 2,469, and their weight was 211.99 kg. The annual changes in fisheries production in the western coast of Korea were also analyzed from 1990 to 2007. The total near shore fisheries products in Korea has been relatively stable around 1,4000,000 metric tons to 1,8000,000 tons during this period. Similarly the Chungnam Province's annual fish catch had steadily risen from about 51,187 tons in 1990 to 85,637 tons in 2007. However, Jeonbuk Province's annual fish catch declined dramatically at around 133, 000 tons in 1990 to 45,000 tons in 2007. In summery, while the overall Korea's fisheries production has been stable over the past decade, that of Jeonbuk Province suffered drastic decline in the period. This decline was reflected in the decreased number of fish species, total individuals, and total catch in surverys performed with an experimental vessel.

A Study on the Managemental Rationalization of Set Net (정치망어업의 경영합리화에 관한 연구)

  • The set-net fishing is involved in the trap fishing method that intercepts the fishes migrating along the coast and induces them to be in the bag net stretched in advance. And this fishing also corresponds to the licensed fishing in fisheries law. Though its annual total production of around 50,000 to 70,000 M/T is less than in other fishery section, its price becomes higher because the fishes are sold in the live fish condition. Until recently, the set-net fishing is one of the preferred fisheries on account of its less operation expense and stably operating condition in a long term. In the meantime, the industrialization in Korea having been prospered along coastal area and the over fishing in terms of the powered and larger size fishing boat make the fishing ground environment worse yearly. In addition, its difficulty becomes more worse with issuing fishery product free import in July 1997; accordingly, the strategy for the set-net fishing through business rationalization should be considered. From the discussion of the sort of set-net, general present situation and operating actual state of set-net fishing, the improved methods for business rationalization in the present paper is proposed as follows: 1. to increase the fisheries resource through prevention of the marine contamination and purification of coastal area environment. 2. to save the labour cost through the improved the fishing gear. 3. to improve the fish quality through development of the process technology. 4. to increase the income of fishers through improvement of the distribution channels.
