Laboratory tests were performed to determine the efficiency of dye solution desalination by electrodialysis. The study involved anionic dye and mineral salt recovery by obtaining two streams from a salt and dye mixture - dye-rich solution and salt solution. A standard anion-exchange and cation-exchange membranes or monovalent selective anion-exchange membranes were used in the ED stack. It was found that the separation efficiency was strongly dependent on the dye molecular weight. The best results for standard ion-exchange membranes were achieved for the desalination of Direct Black solution. Furthermore, the obtained results implied that the application of monovalent selective anion-exchange membranes improved the recovery of dye and salt solutions - the dye concentration in the diluate remained constant irrespective of the molecular weight of anionic dyes, whereas the salt recovery remained very high (99.5%).

In this study, the anionic exchange membranes were prepared through the impregnation of polyethylenimine (PEI) into porous polyethylene (PE) separator and then crosslinking with isophrhaloyl dichloride (IPC). To characterize the resulting membranes, the contact angles, FT-IR, ion exchnage capacity and ion conductivity were measured. The amide group is produced the reaction between amines in PEI and -COCl in IPC. In case of ion exchange capacity, 1.96 meq./g dry membrane at the reaction time, 30 sec was decreased to 1.14 meq./g dry membrane at 600 sec reaction time. The ion conductivity, $9.15{\times}10^{-2}S/cm$ at 30 sec reaction time, was obtained.
The effect of anionic and cationic exchange polymer layer on the chronopotentiometry (CP) and current voltage curves (I-V) of charged composite membrane are investigated. Also, the ion transport near the interface between electrolyte and ionic exchange polymer membranes (anionic and cationic ones) and charged mosaic polymer composite membrane is studied. The results show that both anionic and cationic polymer exchange membranes exhibit lower voltage drop over range of applied current density and possess favorable industrial application potentials, especially at low KCl concentration. While the charged mosaic polymer composite membrane didn't show any current-voltage change, irrespective to the type and the concentration of used electrolyte. CP and I-V measurements are effectively used to give some fundamental understanding for ion transport behavior of ion exchange polymer membrane near the interlace.

Adsorption is a widely used technique for the removal of dyes from wastewaters by variety of adsorbents. In this work, the main focus is on the potential assessment of anion exchange membrane for the removal of different dyes using batch system and investigation of experimental data by applying various kinetic and thermodynamic models. The removal of anionic dyes i.e., Eosin-B, Eriochrome Black-T and Congo Red by anion exchange membrane BII from aqueous solution was carried out and effect of various parameters such as contact time, membrane dosage, temperature and ionic strength on the percentage removal of anionic dyes was studied. The experimental data was assessed by kinetic models namely pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich liquid film diffusion, Bangham and the modified Freundlich models equation have been used to analyze the experimental data. These results indicate that the adsorption of these anionic dyes on BII follows pseudo-second-order kinetics with maximum values of regression coefficient (0.992-0.998) for all the systems. The adsorption of dyes was more suitable to be controlled by a liquid film diffusion mechanism. The adsorptive removal of dye Eosin-B and Eriochrome Black-T were decreased with temperature and thermodynamic parameters such as free energy (${\Delta}G^o$), enthalpy (${\Delta}H^o$) and entropy (${\Delta}S^o$) for adsorption of dyes on membrane BII were calculated at 298 K, 308 K and 318 K. The values of enthalpy and entropy were negative for EB and EBT representing that the adsorption of these dyes on BII is physiosorptive and exothermic in nature. Whereas the positive values of enthalpy and entropy for CR adsorption on BII, indicating that its adsorption is endothermic and spontaneous in nature. It is evident from this study that anion exchange membrane has shown good potential for the removal of dyes from aqueous solution and it can be used as adsorbent for dues removal on commercial levels.
The incubation study was conducted under aerobic and anaerobic conditions to study the release of the kinetically labile forms (i. e. chelating ion or anion forms) of Cd, Cu and Zn in sludge-untreated soil ("Control"), sludge 50 and $100dry\;Mg\;ha^{-1}$ treated soils ("Soil-Sludge mixtures"), and sewage sludge ("Sludge"). The chelating ion and anion exchange membranes were embedded into the samples and incubated for 16 weeks under aerobic and anaerobic condition. The total amounts of chelating ion or anionic forms of Cd were too little to be measured during both aerobic and anaerobic incubation. On the other hand, the total amounts of chelating ion or anionic forms of Cu and Zn slightly increased throughout the incubation period under both incubation conditions. For "Control" and "Soil-Sludge mixtures" treatments, the total amounts of Cu and Zn in chelating ion and anion exchange membrane were little difference between aerobic and anaerobic condition, and the total amounts of chelating ion form of Cu and Zn were not different from the those of anionic form of Cu and Zn. However, for "Sludge" treatment, the total amounts of Cu and Zn in anion and chelating ion exchange membrane were greater under aerobic condition than under anaerobic condition, and the total amounts of chelating ion form of Cu and Zn were greater than those of anion form of Cu and Zn under both incubation conditions.

In this work, batch adsorption of anionic dye acid green-25 (AG-25) from aqueous solution has been carried out at room temperature using anion exchange membrane (DF-120B) as a noval adsorbent. The effect of various experimental parameters such as contact time, membrane dosage, ionic strength and temperature on the adsorption of dye were investigated. Kinetic models namely pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, liquid film diffusion, Bangham and modified freundlich models were employed to evaluate the experimental data. Parameters like adsorption capacities, rate constant and related correlation coefficients for every model are calculated and discussed. It showed that adsorption of AG-25 onto DF-120B followed pseudo-first-order rate expression. Thermodynamic study indicates that adsorption of AG-25 onto DF-120B is an exothermic and spontaneous process.
Heterogeneous ion exchange membranes were prepared by mixing polyethylene as matrix with bead and fibrous anionic ion exchangers at different mixing ratio. Generally, ion exchange capacities were increased with increasing the ratio of the fibrous ion exchanger content. The highest ion exchange capacity of the membrane was 1.86 meq/g at 30wt% IXF (ion exchange fiber) in the membrane. The water uptake, fixed ion concentration, and ion transport number of the membrane increased with increasing the content of the fibrous ion exchanger. However, the electrical resistivity of the membrane was decreased with increasing the content of the fibrous ion exchanger. The lowest electrical resistivity of 5$\Omega$/$\textrm{cm}^2$ was observed at 30 wt%of IXF.
The anionic exchange polymer, poly(vinyl amine)(PVAm), was coated onto polyamide (PA) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes by using 'salting-out' method. The effects of the fouling phenomena for these PVAm coated membranes were investigated using the model foulants, bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA), and sodium alginate (SA). The surface coating and the fouling phenomena were observed by the scanning electron microscopy. And the flux was measured for each 100 ppm of above foulant aqueous solution at the operating pressure, 2, 4, 8 bar. The PVAm-coated PA membranes showed somewhat fouling improvements and the fouling reduction was shown in the order of HA > SA > BSA, particularly HA case was distinct.
The purpose of this paper is whether or not the in-situ restoration of the reverse osmosis (RO) membranes which its membrane function is lost is possible. The damaged RO membranes are double coated through the salting-out method by the poly(styrene sulfonic acid) sodium salt as the cationic exchange polymer and the polyethyleneimine as the anionic exchange polymer and also conducted the opposite order of the coating materials. And according to the concentration, time and ionic strength, the flux and rejection are measured for the coated membranes. Then the best coating condition is to apply for the RO membrane module of the household water purifier to know the possibility of the in-situ restoration for the commercial module. When the condition of the PEI 30,000 ppm (IS = 0.1)/PSSA 20,000 ppm (IS = 0.7) is applied, the rejection was enhance from 69% for the damaged module to 86% (90% for the pristine module).

In this study, we employed anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants for the hydrophilization of porous substrates used in the fabrication of pore-filling membranes. We investigated the extent of hydrophilization based on the type of surfactant, its concentration, and immersion time. Furthermore, we used the hydrophilized substrates to produce pore-filling anion exchange membranes and compared their ion conductivity to determine the optimal hydrophilization conditions. For the ionic surfactants used in this study, we observed that hydrophilization progressed rapidly from the beginning of immersion when the applied concentration was 3.0 wt%, compared to lower concentrations (0.05, 0.5, and 1.0 wt%). In contrast, for the relatively larger molecular weight non-ionic surfactants, smooth hydrophilization was not observed. There was no apparent correlation between the degree of hydrophilization and the ion conductivity of the anion exchange membrane. This discrepancy suggests that an excessive hydrophilization process during the treatment of porous substrates leads to excessive adsorption of the surfactant on the sparse surfaces of the porous substrate, resulting in a significant reduction in porosity and subsequently decreasing the content of polymer electrolyte capable of ion exchange, thereby greatly increasing the electrical resistance of the membrane.
