An 8-year-old, shih-tzu female dog was referred due to neurological signs including paraparesis and back pain. On the complete blood count, hematologic analysis showed elevated leukocytosis. Serum biochemical analysis revealed elevated serum alkaline phosphatase concentration and C-reactive protein concentration. On the neurologic exam, the dog was suspected to have thoracolumbar myelopathy. On magnetic resonance imaging, there were masses within the spinal canal at L1-3 intervertebral disc space that were located dorsal to spinal cord. It was hyperintense on T1-, T2-weighted magnetic resonance images, Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery, and fat suppression images. The contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images showed no enhancement. The lesions were well circumscribed. The spinal cord was compressed and displaced ventrally by the mass. After removal of the masses via L1-L3 dorsal laminectomy, pyogranulomatous inflammation was confirmed by histopathological examination. Six months after surgery, the dog recovered uneventfully and remained fully ambulatory with no neurological deficits. This case demonstrates the utility of magnetic resonance imaging for the diagnosis of spinal canal pyogranulomatous inflammation.

The space harmonics generated by a plane-wave incident upon a multi-layered dielectric grating can undergo strong resonance scattering variations known as GMR(guided-mode resonance). To clarify these effects, we examine the field propagation and dispersion curve inside the grating region by using a rigorous equivalent transmission-line theory(RETT). The results show that, at the peak of a scattering resonance, the reflected mode is almost identical to a leaky wave that can be supported by the grating structure. Thus, we confirm and generalize previous research that has occurred GMR effect associated with the free-resonant character of leaky waves at multi-layered dielectric gratings. Quantitative simulation results illustrating the behavior of typical gratings are given, and the special case of normal incidence is discussed for TM mode.

The vertical-axis tidal current turbine (VAT) consisting of blades, struts to support blades, shaft, generator and so forth requires anti-resonance design against fluid fluctuation forces generated on blades to ensure its stable operation. In this study, a free vibration analysis program based on the finite element method is developed for efficient anti-resonance design of VAT in the preliminary design stage. In the finite element modeling, the VAT structure components are regarded as beam elements. Added masses due to the fluid and structure interaction of VAT evaluated by empirical formulas are considered as lumped mass elements. In addition, input parameters required for the analysis can be automatically prepared from the principal dimensions of VAT to make anti-resonance design more convenient. The validity of applied methods is verified by the comparison of the numerical results obtained from MSC/Nastran and the developed program for two VAT models.

Ultrasonic atomic force microscopy(Ultrasonic-AFM) can be used to obtain images of the elastic properties of a subsurface and to evaluate the elastic properties by measuring the contact resonance frequency. When a tip is in contact with the sample, it is necessary to understand the cantilever behavior and the tip-sample interaction for the quantitative and reliable analysis. Therefore, precise analysis models that can accurately simulate the tip-sample contact are required; these can serve as good references for predicting the contact resonance frequency. In this study, modal analyses of the first four modes were performed to calculate the contact resonance frequency by using a spring model, and the deformed shapes of the cantilever were visualized at each mode. We presented the contact characteristics of the cantilever with a variety of contact conditions by applying the contact area, contact material thickness, and material properties as the parameters for the FEM analysis.
The flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) can apply the magnetic field into the high-$T_C$ superconducting(HTSC) element by adopting the magnetic field coil in its third winding. To apply the magnetic field into the HTSC element effectively, the capacitor for LC resonance is connected in series with the magnetic field coil. However, the current waveform of third winding for the application of the magnetic field is affected by the LC resonance condition for the frequency of the source voltage and can affect the waveform of the limited fault current. In this paper, the current waveform of the third winding in the flux-lock type SFCL according to LC resonance condition during a fault period was analyzed. From the differential equation for its electrical circuit, the current equation of the third winding was derived and described with the natural frequency and the damping ratio as design parameters. Through the analysis according to the design parameters of the third winding, the waveform of the limited fault current was confirmed to be influenced by the current waveform of the third winding and the design condition for the stable fault current limiting operation of this SFCL was obtained.
Fruits are subjected to complex dynamic stresses in the transportation environment. During a long journey form the production area to markets, there is always some degree of vibration present. Vibration inputs are transmitted from the vehicle through the packaging to the fruit. Inside, these cause sustained bouncing of fruits against each other and container wall. These steady state vibration input may cause serious fruit injury, and this damage is particularly severe whenever the fruit inside the package is free to bounce, and is vibrated at its resonance frequency. The determination of the resonant frequencies of the fruit may help the packaging designer to determine the proper packaging system providing adequate protection for the fruit, and to understand the complex interaction between the components of fruit when they relate to expected transportation vibration inputs. The first frequency of the pear in packaged freight be stacked in resonance frequency band of the pear packaged freight was increased from the bottom to the top of the stack but the second frequency of that in resonance frequency band of the pear was decreased. This indicated that the high damage score of the pear in bottom tier in vibration test was due to higher acceleration level in resonance frequency band of the pear.

The effect of inter-band transition on surface plasmon resonance in gold thin film was investigated. We induced localized inter-band transition in the film by using incident light on its surface from a green laser (532 nm) source, and the surface plasmon resonance for inter-band transition was investigated at different wavelengths. It was determined that the reflectivity of blue light (450 nm) was significantly reduced in the region where the green laser was incident. We demonstrated that this decrease is mainly due to the coupling between the blue light and the surface plasmon resonance of excited electrons in higher energy states, based on experimental results for the incident and polarization angle-dependent reflectivity of the blue light.

Objective : The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is an obstacle for molecules to pass through from blood to the brain. Focused ultrasound is a new method which temporarily opens the BBB, which makes pharmaceutical delivery or removal of neurodegenerative proteins possible. This study was demonstrated to review our BBB opening procedure with magnetic resonance guided images and find specific patterns in the BBB opening. Methods : In this study, we reviewed the procedures and results of two clinical studies on BBB opening using focused ultrasound regarding its safety and clinical efficacy. Magnetic resonance images were also reviewed to discover any specific findings. Results : Two clinical trials showed clinical benefits. All clinical trials demonstrated safe BBB opening, with no specific side effects. Magnetic resonance imaging showed temporary T1 contrast enhancement in the sonication area, verifying the BBB opening. Several low-signal intensity spots were observed in the T2 susceptibility-weighted angiography images, which were also reversible and temporary. Although these spots can be considered as microbleeding, evidence suggests these are not ordinary microbleeding but an indicator for adequate BBB opening. Conclusion : Magnetic resonance images proved safe and efficient BBB opening in humans, using focused ultrasound.

The bio-sensing properties of TE and TM guided modes in the coupled plasmon-waveguide resonance (PWR) configuration are investigated. The modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) is used for numerical analysis. The proposed PWR bio-sensor is composed of multi-layered configuration with N pairs of MgF2-Si3N4 layers to enhance the sensitivity of a conventional Ag-based surface plasmon resonance bio-sensor. The angular sensitivity of bio-sensor is numerically analyzed for a wide range of biological solutions (refractive index 1.33~1.37). Furthermore, the availability of sensor to detect cancer cells and blood plasma concentration is evaluated. Finally, the results indicate that the proposed bio-sensor is capable efficiently to detect various kinds of cancer cells and different glucose concentrations in urine.
Purpose: To develop a two-dimensional (2D) image-based respiratory motion correction technique for free-breathing coronary magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). Materials and Methods: The proposed respiratory navigator obtained aliased a 2D sagittal image from under-sampled k-space data and utilized motion correlation between the aliased images. The proposed navigator was incorporated into the conventional coronary MRA sequence including the diaphragm navigator and tested in three healthy subjects. Results: The delineation of major coronary arteries was significantly improved using the proposed 2D motion correction (S/I and A/P) compared to one-dimensional (S/I) correction using the conventional diaphragm navigator. Conclusion: The 2D image-based respiratory navigator was proposed for free-breathing coronary angiography and showed the potential for improving respiratory motion correction compared to the conventional 1D correction.
