  • The objective of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the location and prospects of the bear shelves built by Asiatic black bears in the Jirisan National Park. Previous researchers have been analyzed bear shelves in terms of places for resting and eating, but we are going to analyze based on the prospect-and-refuge theory. Characteristics of the sites of bear shelves are measured through field survey and topographic analysis by using digital elevation model (DEM). The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is used to evaluate the optimum location of bear shelves in terms of crown density. Man-made objects are identified by viewshed analysis based on geographical information system (GIS). Findings of this paper can be summarized as follows. First, most bear trees are located deep inside of the mountainous national park, slopes of 30~40 degrees, altitude of 400~1,200m, and relatively low vegetation density with NDVI value of 0.4~0.6 compared to the average NDVI of the park. Second, the average height of bear shelves is 12.44m, or 74% of the average height of bear trees. They are located at suitable places to observe nearby trails and other park facilities. Third, man-made objects within the 100m radius of bear trees include lodge, bear training center, beekeeping camp, and hiking trails. Thus we may temporarily conclude that one of the main criteria of the bear tree selection in the park has been to identify optimum places for the monitoring of human activities in their habitat.

  • Since the U.S. government officially accepted North Korean(NK) as refugees starting in 2006, about 120 North Koreans have come to and been living in the United States. However, little is known in regard to what the North Korean refugees need for a qualify life. This study aims to explore the essential experiences of North Korean defectors who have settled in the United States after escaping North Korea. Research inquiries are why North Korean refugees have chosen the United States for their settlement, and how they are living in the United States. Data were collected from in-depth interviews with eight NK refugees. For data analysis, grounded theory approach by Strauss and Corbin(1998) was employed. The data analysis identified the central phenomenon, protective and risk factors, and core actions and consequences of NK refugees' adjustment in the U.S. The central phenomenon was "voluntary choose to come to the U.S." The core action and consequences in the process of their adjustment were 'searching for the meaning of life,' and 'achieving acculturation.' The findings may provide deeper understanding on the situation of North Korean refugees in the U.S. and implications for how to help them adjust well in the society.

  • Since the Syrian Civil War in 2011, the number of refugees has been on the rise in Korea as well as worldwide. In addition to recognition of legal status for refugees, employment and education support, and qualification recognition are emerging as social issues. In this context, this study aims to compare the cases of Netherlands and Norway in terms of evaluation and recognition of refugees' qualifications. The findings of the study show that although there were concerns about the lack of official documents to verify the qualifications of refugees, the two countries have developed a special process for the evaluation and recognition for refugees respectively according to the Lisbon Recognition Convention. In addition, both countries have developed a recognition of prior learning system which has made the qualification recognition process flexible from a point of refugees. These experiences could be used as benchmarks for the Korean government which has a responsibility to develop its own qualification recognition system for refugees in the near future.

  • Purpose: Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a major cause of morbidity and remains a major cause of hospitalization. Following the Syrian refugee crisis and insufficient clean water in the region, this study reviews the etiological and epidemiological data in Lebanon. Methods: We prospectively analyzed demographic, clinical and routine laboratory data of 198 children from the age of 1 month to 10 years old who were admitted with the diagnosis of AGE to a private tertiary care hospital located in the district of Nabatieh in south Lebanon. Results: Males had a higher incidence of AGE (57.1%). Pathogens were detected in 57.6% (n=114) of admitted patients, among them single pathogens were found in 51.0% (n=101) of cases that consisted of: Entamoeba histolytica 26.3% (n=52), rotavirus 18.7% (n=37), adenovirus 6.1% (n=12) and mixed co-pathogens found in 6.6% (n=13). Breast-fed children were significantly less prone to rotavirus (p=0.041). Moreover, children who had received the rotavirus vaccine were significantly less prone to rotavirus (p=0.032). Conclusion: Our findings highlight the high prevalence of E. histolytica infection as the major cause of pediatric gastroenteritis in hospitalized children, during the summer period likely reflecting the insanitary water supplies and lack of hygiene. Moreover the 42.4% of unidentified causative pathogens should prompt us to widen our diagnostic laboratory arsenal by adopting new diagnostic technologies.

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate the change of pressure differential and smoke propagation characteristics in the elevator lobby with the resident's evacuation scenarios using fire modelling technique. The results showed absolute pressures in the fire room and elevator lobby can significantly increase to cause fire door to the stairway unclosed once it is open. This is due to constant pressure differentials, the increasing reference pressure of fire lobby and pressure leak from elevator lobby to fire lobby. Smoke exhaust mechanism was needed to prevent the continuous pressure rise in the living room. Over 200 Pa was expected upon closing the door during pressurization, which provide difficulties in opening the door for next refugee. Opening both fire door and entrance door may induce smoke flow from fire room to elevator lobby and stairway.

  • This study aimed to develop an educational program on cervical cancer prevention and human papillomavirus (HPV) for female North Korean refugees and to assess the effect of the program. This study used a nonequivalent control group with a pretest-posttest design. The participants were 42 female North Korean refugees in their 20s residing in South Korea. Measurements included cervical cancer knowledge, HPV knowledge, attitude toward HPV vaccination, and intention for HPV vaccination. Statistically significant differences emerged in levels of cervical cancer knowledge (U = 40.00, p < .001), HPV knowledge (U = 4.50, p < .001), and attitude toward HPV vaccination (U = 128.00, p = .013) between the experimental and control group. The educational program is an effective nursing intervention to improve cervical cancer knowledge, HPV knowledge, and attitude toward HPV vaccination of female North Korean refugees. Stakeholders must work to establish health policies to reduce health disparities between South and North Korean women to prepare for unification.

  • Caused by the Cheonanham attack and the Yeonpyeongdo bombardment occurred a few years ago, and the recent North Korea's nuclear test, the war crisis between South and North Korea has been increasing. Accordingly, an interest in obtaining a temporary residential space, for the case of the outbreak of war, where people can reside safely over a period of time has been escalating. However, in the disaster relief planning guidelines of the National Emergency Management Agency, the standards on the temporary residential spaces in preparation for storm and flood or earthquake are included, but the standards on the ones in responding to war are not yet equipped. In particular, the standards on the underground temporary residential spaces that can accommodate massive victims should be developed in preparation. In this study, through a requirements analysis based on the survey of war victims and a comparative analysis between disaster-related laws and regulations, the direction of relevant system improvement for the utilization of temporary residential spaces in responding to war is established.

  • This study examined the resilience of North Korean defectors, resilience and the factors influencing resilience, and explored methods of improving their resilience. 129 North Korean defectors, who were trained in B city, participated in the survey from November, 2016 to February, 2017. The resilience, health promoting behavior, and self-esteem were measured. The mean scores were 3.46 for resilience. There were significant positive correlations between resilience and self-esteem. The influence of the independent variables on the on the resilience was examined using regression analysis. Models including the variables explained 11.7%(F=9.460, p<.001) of the variance for the resilience. These findings demonstrate that it is essential for nurses to continuously intervene and help North Korean defectors so as to promote their resilience and self-esteem.
