  • SN 2011fe is the closest and brightest Type Ia supernova in the digital imaging era and thus provides the richest data. We present UBVRI photometry of SN 2011fe for a span of ~180 days after the optical maximum. This paper contains measurements made at SOAO, LOAO, and SNUO and also includes data from a small telescope in Mongolia. We compare the results with the ones obtained by Richmond & Smith (2012) and Vinko et al. (2012).

  • We used BV CCD images to study the dynamical substructures of three globular clusters - M5, NGC6934, NGC7006 - analyzing the radial variations of ellipticity and position angle from the point spread function stellar photometry and the ellipse surface photometry. Several populations were classified by the brightness on color-magnitude diagrams of each globular cluster. Ellipse analyses to the images, removed stars of each population from the original images of the clusters, show radial variations in ellipticity and position angle, with the amount of $0.01\~0.25$ in ellipticity and $+90\~-90$ degrees in position angle up to roughly three times of half light radius $(r_h)$. It is also apparent that there are no significant discrepancies in the dynamical substructures beyond $r_h$ among the different populations. However, dynamical substructures on the central region (i.e., inner than $\~r_h$) reflect the contributions of populations of bright red giant stars and horizontal branch stars.

  • This poster introduces the ongoing "Narrow-band Ca Photometry for Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies" project and presents the latest results. The project aims to explain the formation and evolution of dwarf spheroidal galaxies by examining the structural properties of stellar populations as a function of metallicity. To overcome the lack of stars with known spectroscopic metallicities for dwarf spheroidal galaxies, we apply the hk index as a photometric metallicity indicator to three galaxies-Draco, Sextans, and Canes Venatici I. For all three galaxies, we found that metal-poor and metal-rich groups of red-giant-branch stars have distinct spatial distributions, in which metal-rich stars are centrally concentrated while metal-poor stars are relatively dispersed. In Sextans, we found an off-centered peak of metal-poor stars which is presumed to be a disrupting star cluster in this galaxy. We will discuss the implications of our results for the dwarf galaxy formation and possible directions on future work of this project.

  • CCD time series photometry was performed for two Oosterhoff type II field RR Lyrae stars, SV Eri and XX And, to construct light curves in B and V bands. The maximum light times from our observations were combined with those in the literature to construct phase shift diagrams, from which we determined the period change rates ${\beta}$. We obtained large positive period change rates for these stars, which are expected from current evolutionary models if these stars are evolving rapidly from blue to red toward the end of core helium burning phase.

  • Unlike the conventional wisdom, observations made during the past decade have revealed that many globular clusters possess more than one stellar population. Here, we have discovered evidence for multiple red giant branches (RGBs) in the globular cluster NGC 6388 from the narrow-band Calcium and Str$\ddot{o}$mgren b & y (Caby) photometry. In order to confirm the difference in Calcium abundance, we have acquired the low resolution spectroscopy for these RGB stars. In this paper, we will present results of our photometry and hand in the preliminary results of spectroscopic observations.

  • Using the JHK 2MASS near-infrared data, we present photometry results for the old open cluster (OC) Trumpler 5 (Tr 5). From the near-infrared color-magnitude diagrams of Tr 5, we have located the position of the red giant clump (RGC) stars, and used the mean magnitude of the RGC stars in K-band to estimate the distance to Tr 5. From the Padova isochrone fittings, we have estimated the reddening, metallicity, and age of Tr 5. These parameters generally agree well with those obtained from the previous studies on Tr 5 and confirms that this cluster is an old OC with metallicity being metal-poorer than solar abundance, located in the anti-Galactic center region.

  • We present VR CCD photometry and long-slit spectroscopy of a late type spiral galaxy NGC 7678. The grey scale images and isophotal maps illustrate the presence of a weak bar from which spiral arms emerge. There are many HII regions along the spiral arms, but bright giant HII regions are more concentrated in the massive southern arm. The bright compact nucleus of NGC 7678 is bluer than bulge and bar. The spectral features of the nucleus and HII regoins are very similar but the nuclear spectra shows higher $[NII]{\lambda}6583/H_\alpha$ than those of the HII regions. The nucleus of NGC 7678 seems to be intermediate type between HII region nulcei and LINERs by the ratio of $[NII]{\lambda}6583/H_\alpha$, but it is more likely to be HII region-like nucleus if we consider the $[NII]{\lambda}6716,6731/H_\alpha$ together. The star formation rate is estimated to be about $0.2 M_\bigodot\;yr^{-1}$ based on the $H_\alpha$ flux.

  • Near-IR observations of the central few parsecs of our Galaxy from the HST/NICMOS have been analyzed to produce H, K photometry. We have cross-identified our photometry with the Keck high-resolution spectrometry of the central 0.5 pc of our galaxy to distinguish evolved late-type stars from early-type stars, and use late-type stars as tracer population. We perform several statistical tests to find the best fitting parameters of stellar density distribution and velocity dispersion models, then derive volume number densities and velocity dispersions. The volume number density distribution has power law index $1.55\~1.7$. We then derive the mass distribution in the Central region of our Galaxy using the Jeans equation.

  • We have conducted near-infrared (J- and H-band) surface photometry for two early type barred galaxies, NGC 3412 and NGC 3941. The bulges of NGC 3412 and NGC 3941 show isophotal twists which indicate that they are triaxial. NGC 3412 has a very short bar and its bulge is more centrally concentrated than that of NGC 3941. The unusually short bar and the centrally concentrated triaxial bulge of NGC 3412 might be the result of bar dissolution. The colors of the nuclear region of NGC 3941 resemble those of the blue nuclei, implying the presence of young stellar populations.

  • UBV RI and H$\alpha$ photometry has been performed for the open cluster NGC 6531. A total of 56 bright main sequence (MS) members were selected from their positions in photometric diagrams. We also classified 7 pre-main sequence (PMS) stars and 6 PMS candidates with Ha: emission from H$\alpha$ photometry. We determined a reddening of < E(B - V) >= 0.29 $\pm$ 0.03 and a distance modulus of Vo - Mv = 10.5 for the cluster. From the comparison of our photometric results to theoretical evolution models, we derived a MS turnoff age of 7.5 Myr and a PMS age spread of $\~$4 Myr. The IMF slope $\Gamma$, calculated in the mass range of 0.45 $\le$ log m $\le$ 1.35 is a steep value of $\Gamma$ = -1.8 $\pm$ 0.6.
