  • We performed a monitoring campaign of a Jupiter-Family comet 17P/Holmes, which underwent the dramatic outburst on 23.3 October 2007 at $r_h=2.44AU$, to investigate the secular change in activity and subsequent physical properties of the inner dust coma before and after the 2014 perihelion passage. The monitoring observation was carried out over two years: from May to July 2013, from July to November 2014, and January 2015 with ~weekly cadence. We conducted photometry monitoring in Rc band using four ground-based telescopes, which are the Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory 105cm telescope, the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory 50cm telescope, the Nishi-Harima Astronomical Observatory 2m telescope, and the T30 51cm i-telescope, respectively. In order to examine the dust production rate, we put a constraint upon the physical distance from the center of the nucleus as rho=2500km and conducted aperture photometry. We found that the average absolute Rc magnitude over the period between July to November 2014 was mR(1,1,0)~12.29, which was approximately 1.5 magnitudes fainter than those of 2013 data. Accordingly, comet 17P/Holmes seemed to become dormant, although a minor eruption was detected on January 26, 2015. In this presentation, we will introduce our ongoing project for 17P/Holmes and discuss why the nucleus becomes dormant within one orbital period.

  • Results of 7 nights of CCD VR photometry of the intermediate polar 1RXS J062518.2+733433 obtained at the Korean 1.8m telescope are reported. The corrected ephemeris for the orbital minimum is BJD (Orb.min) = 2453023.6159(42)+0.1966431(33) (E-1735). The corrected ephemeris for the spin maximum is BJD (spin max) = 2452893 78477 (10)+0.01374116815 (17) (E-15382) (cycle numbering corresponds to that of Staude et al.2003). The variations of the shape of the individual spin variations are highly correlated in V and R. The phase of the spin maximum is found to be dependent on the orbital phase. The corresponding semi-amplitude of sinusoidal variations of phase is $0.11{\pm}0.03.$ This new phenomenon is explained by the changing viewing conditions of the accreting magnetic white dwarf, and should be checked in further observations this star and for other intermediate polars. To avoid influence of this effect on the analysis of the long-term spin period variations, the runs of at least one orbital period are recommended. Results of time series analysis are presented in tables.

  • Although the era of very large telescopes has come, small telescopes still have advantages for fast follow-up and long-term monitoring observation. Intensive monitoring survey of nearby galaxies (IMSNG) aims to understand the nature of the supernovae (SNe) by catching the early light curve from them with the network of small telescopes from 0.4-m to 1.0-m all around the world. To achieve the scientific goals with heterogeneous facilities, three factors are important. First, automatic processes as soon as data is uploaded will increase efficiency and shorten the time. Second, searching for transients is necessary to deal with newly emerged transients for fast follow-up observation. Finally, the Integrated process for different telescopes gives a homogeneous output, which will eventually make connections with the database easy. Here, we introduce the integrated pipeline, 'gppy' based on Python, for more than 10 facilities having various configurations and its performance. Processes consist of image pre-process, photometry, image align, image combine, photometry, and transient search. In the connected database, homogeneous output is summarized and analyzed additionally to filter transient candidates with light curves. This talk will suggest the future work to improve the performance and usability on the other projects, gravitational wave electromagnetic wave counterpart in Korea Observatory (GECKO), and small telescope network of Korea (SOMANGNET).

  • The electrical, mechanical and optical capabilities have been tested of the microdensitometer PDS 1010GMS at the Korea Astronomy Observatory. The highest stage of scan speed 255 csu (conventional speed unit) is measured to be 47 mm/s. At this speed the position is displaced by $4{\mu}m$ to the direction of scanning and the density is underestimated by $0.4{\sim}0.7D$. Standard deviation in the measured density is proportional to $A^{-0.46}$, where A is the area of scan aperture. The accuracy of position repeatability is ${\pm}1{\mu}m$, and that of density repeatability is ${\pm}(0.003{\sim}0.03)D$. Callier coefficient is determined to be 1.37; the semispecular density is directly proportional to the diffuse density up to 3.5D. Because the logarithmic amplifier has a finite response time, the densities measured at high scan speeds are underestimated to the degree that speeds higher than 200 csu are inadequate for making an accurate astronomical photometry. After power is on, an about 5 hour period of warming is required to stabilize the system electrically and mechanically as well. On the basis of this performance test, we have determined the followings as the optimum scan parameters for the astronomical photometry: For the scan aperture $10\;\sim\;20{\mu}m$ is optimal, and for the scan speed. $20\;{\sim}\;50$ csu is appropriate. These parameter values are chosen in such a way that they may keep the density repeatability within ${\pm}0.01D$, the position displacement under $1{\mu}m$, and the density underestimation below 0.1D even in high density regions.

  • Differential time-series observations of BL Camelopardalis classified as a double mode SX Phoenicis type variable were secured with a charge coupled device. The observed photometric data was reduced using the IRAF Package and the differential magnitudes were obtained through aperture photometry. The periods of BL Cam were analyzed with the Generalized Least-Square Method by Vanicek (1971) and the Fourier Decomposition Method. It was found that the first and second period of BL Cam were 0.0391 day respectively which lead the period ratio of P1/P0=0.81. This period ratio is much different from 0.78 determined by other investigators and also much more larger than that of other double-mode SX Phe type variables. In addition, this period ratio is much different from the value expected from the relation between the metallicity and period ratio. From these results, it can be confirmed that BL Cam is the most extreme case among all double-mode SX Phe type variables.

  • This study classified outer-ring galaxies using 25,308 galaxies within z=0.05 from the SDSS DR7, which are larger than Rpet>6 arcsec and whose minor-to-major axis ratio (b/a)<0.6. We selected 531 galaxies that have ring-like structures by visual inspection of the color images of 25,308 galaxies; these galaxies with ring-like structures served as a primary sample from which we selected 90 outer-ring galaxies. The final sample of 69 outer-ring galaxies was selected by examining the photometric properties of the candidate galaxies. Their properties were determined by conducting surface photometry on their u, g, r, i, and z images. The frequency of the outer-ring galaxies was found to be 0.3% of the local galaxies. We examined the environment of the outer-ring galaxies using two measures of environment, namely, the projected distance to the nearest-neighbor galaxy and the local background density. We did not observe any notable difference between outer-ring and other galactic environments.

  • We present B, V, I time series CCD photometry for the variable star TU UMi to classify its variable type. The observations were performed using 61cm telescope equipped with 2K CCD camera at Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory (SOAO). Judging from the amplitude ratio $({\Delta}i/{\Delta}v)$ and color variation $({\Delta}(b-v),\;{\Delta}(v-i))$. TU UMi should be a W UMa type eclipsing binary. We obtained two primary times of minimum lights (HJD 2453848.0446, HJD 2453848.2309) from our observations and determined new orbital elements (Min I=HJD 2452500.1344+0.37708907${\times}$E) for TU UMi.

  • We performed R band time-series CCD photometric observations of the 55 Pandora for 2 nights using the 0.6 m telescope equipped with 2K CCD camera at SOAO (Sobaeksan Optical Astronomical Observatory). From the observation we determined its rotation period $P=0.^d2007=4.^h8168$, and maximum amplitude $0.281\;{\pm}\;0.001$. We also derived the pole position ${\lambda}_p(^o)=342$, ${\beta}_p(^o)=64$, and the shape parameter a/b = 1.27, b/c = 1.31 by applying Amplitude-Magnitude method.

IS THE PEGASUS DWARF GALAXY A MEMBER OF THE LOCAL GROUP?

  • Deep V I CCD photometry of the Pegasus dwarf irregular galaxy shows that the tip of the red giant branch (RGB) is located at I = $21.15{\pm}0.10$ mag and (V - I) = $1.58{\pm}0.03$. Using the I magnitude of the tip of the RGB (TRGB), the distance modulus of the Pegasus galaxy is estimated to be $(m\;-\;M)_o\;=\;25.13{\pm}0.11$ mag (corresponding to a distance of d = $1060{\pm}50$ kpc). This result is in a good agreement with the recent distance estimate based on the TRGB method by Aparicio [1994, ApJ, 437, L27],$ (m\;-\;M)_o$ = 24.9 (d = 950 kpc). However, our distance estimate is much smaller than that based on the Cepheid variable candidates by Hoessel et al.[1990, AJ, 100, 1151], $(m\;-\;M)_o\;=\;26.22{\pm}0.20$ (d = $1750{\pm}160$ kpc) mag. The color-magnitude diagram illustrates that the Cepheid candidates used by Hoessel et al.are not located in the Cepheid instability strip, but in the upper part of the giant branch. This result shows that the Cepheid candidates studied by Hoessel et al.are probably not Cepheids, but other types of variable stars. Taking the average of our distance estimate and Aparicio's, the distance to the Pegasus galaxy is d= $1000{\pm}80$ kpc. Considering the distance and velocity of the Pegasus galaxy with respect to the center of the Local Group, we conclude that the Pegasus galaxy is probably a member of the Local Group.

  • The purpose of this study was to classify the somatotype based on the side view and to analyze the characteristics of each somatotype. In order to reduce the burden of stocks and increase clothing fitness, systematic information on typical body sizes and somatotypes is essential. The subjects were 206 unmarried women aged from 19-29. Data were collected through anthropometry and photometry and analyzed by factor analysis, cluster analysis and analysis of variance. As the result of factor analysis for the classification of somatotypes, 8 factors which explain 74.7% of variance were extracted from 35 photometric and 17 anthrometric data. Using factor scores cluster analysis was carried out and the subjects were classified into 4 cluster. Each cluster was classified as bending type, swayback, turning over type and straight type accordding to its position to the relativeplumb line and their side view contour.
