The Effect of Leisure Activities on Depression in Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (조손가정 내 조부모의 여가활동이 우울감에 미치는 영향)

  • Recently, an interest on parenting stress and depression of grandparents raising grandchildren is rising according to the increase of working couple and divorce. Discussing around developmental task of elderly, one of the influencing factors on increase of grandparents' parenting stress and depression is leisure restriction. However, this factor has received far less rigorous analysis. Thus, the purpose of this article is to offer an analysis of the effect of leisure activities on depression in grandparents raising grandchildren. The data was collected from 172 grandparents raising their grandchildren in 2011 national survey results on the elderly life conditions. Their analyses were composed of descriptive statistic and multiple regression analysis. The study generated several findings. First, grandparents participated in activities for exercise and religion at a high rate and their mean score of depression was 7.1 of 15 what suggests middle level of depression. second, multiple regression analysis showed that the factor of exercise, travel experience, leisure activities satisfaction and other special leisure activities were statistically significant predictors of depression. Implication for social welfare services and programs to improve the mental health of grandparents raising their grandchildren to have positive self-awareness and attitude about life in their position and living condition for help prevent depression were discussed.

A Preliminary Study on the Wellness-Enhancing Effect of an App for the Development of the Self-Life Coaching App (셀프 라이프코칭 앱(App) 개발을 위한 앱의 웰니스 증진 효과에 대한 예비 연구)

  • Considering the necessity for individuals to check and manage their wellness to promote happiness, this study conducted preliminary research on the effect of wellness enhancement of the self-life coaching app. Thirty-six participants were randomly assigned to experimental groups 1 and 2 and a control group, respectively. In particular, the experimental groups were asked to perform self-life coaching for 4 weeks using a research app. Weekly feedback was provided to experimental group 1, but not to experimental group 2. The wellness index for workers (WIW) and the Korean wellness scale (KWS) were used as dependent variables. The analysis results of interaction effects between pre-, post-, and follow-up time points and groups reveal no statistically significant effects in both dependent variables, but the tendency of the effects was confirmed. Moreover, no difference was determined in terms of the presence or absence of weekly feedback in the experimental treatment effect. As a result of repeated measures variance analysis on KWS measured at five times, the wellness enhancement effect over time was statistically significant. Meanwhile, the polynomial trend analysis result confirmed the linear effect of the experimental treatment on wellness. The participation opinion survey also revealed that 84.2% of the participants perceived the activity to be helpful, and 78.9% responded that they would use it once every 1 or 2 weeks if the app is commercially available. This study is meaningful in that it suggests a methodology for utilizing the self-life coaching app so that anyone can use it to promote their wellness and partially confirms the effectiveness of this method.

Case Study of Resource-Oriented Music Listening for Stress Management in Employees on International Deployment (해외 파견 근로자의 스트레스 관리를 위한 자원중심 음악감상 중재 연구)

  • The stress experienced by employees on international deployment has serious implications for their physical and mental health as well as their work performance. This study aimed to investigate the impact of resource-oriented music listening on work-related stress among employees on international deployment. The study recruited 10 participants of varying ages and occupations who had worked abroad for at least three years and conducted five personalized resource-oriented music listening sessions along with interviews. The Global Assessment of Recent Stress Scale (GARS) and Job Stress Scale (JSS) were used to measure stress levels before and after the intervention. Results showed that participants' work-related stress and perceived stress were significantly reduced following the music therapy intervention. The study also found that "awareness of own's life situation" and "self-acceptance of here and now emotional challenges" were factors that reduced regulatory stress among employees on international deployment. This study highlights the potential of resource-oriented music listening as a useful tool for managing workplace stress and promoting the well-being of expatriate employees.

Impact of Empathy Ability and Gratitude Disposition on Job Satisfaction in Psychiatric Nurses (정신간호사의 공감능력과 감사성향이 직무만족에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was designed to examine the degree of empathic ability, gratitude disposition, and job satisfaction, and identify that the impact on job satisfaction of psychiatric nurses. Participants were 196 psychiatric nurses from 8 psychiatric hospitals in Korea. Data were collected from October 8 to 20, 2016 and were analyzed using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression with the SPSS WIN 22.0 program. The mean score of job satisfaction was $3.3{\pm}0.34$, empathic ability was $3.5{\pm}0.28$, and gratitude disposition was $4.0{\pm}0.59$. The psychiatric nurses' empathic ability and gratitude disposition affected their job satisfaction, accounting for 18.5% of the total variance. Empathic ability influenced job satisfaction significantly (B=0.52, p<.001) for 17.0% of the variance. This study suggested that the development of training programs for improving job satisfaction needs to consider their empathic ability and gratitude disposition of psychiatric nurses.

An Analysis of the Effectiveness of Stroke between East-West Integrative Medicine Hospital and Western Medicine Hospital by the Data of Brain Rehabilitation Registry (뇌질환 재활 통합 등록체계 자료(Brain Rehabilitation Registry)를 통한 한양방 협진병원과 양방병원의 뇌졸중 환자 치료효과 분석)

  • Objectives The aims of this study was to observe the effectiveness of East-West Integrative Medicine (EWIM) by analysing between EWIM estimated group and Non-EWIM eastimated group with Brain Rehabilitation Registry. Methods We divided hospitals into two groups, one is EWIM estimated group hospital (Kyeonghee university, Wonkwang university, Dongguk university) and the other is non-EWIM estimated group (Jeonnam university, Gyeongbuk university, Catholic university). Then we analysed the effectiveness of treatments retrospectively using the database of Brain Rehabilitation Registry (http://www.kbrr.or.kr/, version 1.0). Totally 293 patients were included, EWIM estimated group was 175 and non-EWIM estimated group was 118. The main outcome measurements were National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Modified Barthel Index (MBI) and Mini Mental State Examination-Korea (MMSE-K). Results Changes of NIHSS was not significant in both total patient and patient who treated over 3 weeks. MMSE-K showed positively significant difference (p=0.044) in EWIM estimated group patients who treated over 3 weeks. In case of MBI, EWIM estimated group showed more effective result and also statistically significant in both total patients and patients who treated over 3 weeks. Conclusions We patially argued that EWIM estimated group was more effective than non-EWIM estimated group in stroke patients' functional recovery. We suggested base data of EWIM in stroke patiens through this study and this could be applied future researches of developing modified EWIM system.

Subclinical Hypothyroidism in Patients with Bipolar Disorders Managed by Lithium or Valproic Acid (리튬 또는 발프로산으로 치료받은 양극성장애 환자의 무증상 갑상선저하증)

  • Objectives To investigate the pattern of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) in patients with bipolar disorders managed by lithium or valproic acid. Methods The study participants were 106 patients with DSM-IV bipolar disorders receiving planned maintenance treatment at the Mood Disorders Clinic of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (aged between 17 and 64, mean duration of follow-up = 875.65 days). Using the bipolar disorder registry, thyroid function data were analyzed to assess the frequency of and the risk factors for SCH in patients managed by lithium (n = 64) or valproic acid (n = 42) for more than 5 months. Results Overall frequencies of SCH were 20.3% (13/64) in the lithium group, 14.3% (6/42) in the valproic acid group, and between the two groups there is no difference (p = 0.43). No differences were observed in the potential risk factors for SCH between the two groups including age, sex, subtype of bipolar disorder, baseline TSH, and concomitant antipsychotic use. In cases with SCH, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) showed a tendency to increase at 3 month after the initiation of lithium or valproic acid. A gradual increase in the number of patients showing SCH was found within the first 3 years of medication. Conclusions With regular monitoring and careful assessment, there was no difference in the risk of SCH between lithium and valproic acid maintenance. The risk of mood stabilizer-associated SCH may gradually increase within 3 years following the commencement of medication, thereby mandating close monitoring for the first 3 years of treatment. Further studies with large sample size would be needed to confirm these findings.

An Influence of Adolescent's Self-Esteem and Environmental Characteristics on Life Satisfaction : Moderating Effect of Positive Self-Evaluation and Negative Self-Evaluation (청소년의 자아존중감과 환경특성이 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향 : 긍정적 자아평가와 부정적 자아평가의 조절효과)

  • This study analyzes the moderating effects of the self-esteem on the life satisfaction of 2,040 middle school senior students using the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2012 Data (KCYPS 2012) provided by the National Youth Policy Institute. The path analysis of how environmental characteristics, such as parents, friends, and school, affect life satisfaction, is based on four groups of self-esteem, categorized by positive and negative self-evaluation levels. The analysis suggests that groups with higher levels of positive self-evaluation have closer relevance in more paths than other groups. Furthermore, in groups with higher levels of negative self-evaluation, negative effects on life satisfaction are offset by positive self-evaluation. These results suggest research associated with the mental health of adolescents and their self-esteem should be performed according to two separate levels of self-esteem: positive self-evaluation and negative self-evaluation. Since low levels of negative self-evaluation doesn't necessarily guarantee high levels of positive self-evaluation, counseling for adolescents needs to have different tracks, addressing positive and negative self-evaluation levels.

  • Speeding is a major cause of traffic accidents that affects the safety of pedestrians and harms drivers and their families, property and mental health. However, most researches on speeding behavior have been conducted by survey method, so the relationship between cause and effect is not clear. The reliability of the research cannot be carefully examined because most researches involve retrospective methods. It is clear that conducting experimental research is important for overcoming these limitations, but it is impossible to perform tests with real cars in real traffic situations due to the inability to control situational factors (e.g., other vehicles, traffic signal) which affect participants' behavior. A car simulator experiment was designed and the theory of planned behavior was applied to the experiment. Each participant was grouped and assigned to either high speeding intention group or low speeding intention group according to their levels of speeding intention and analyzed the difference of driving behavior indexes between two groups. The results revealed statistically significant differences between two groups on driving speed, speeding frequency, and accelerator pressure deviation. Finally, the limitations and the implications of this study were discussed.

Content analysis of the way university students appreciate the meaning of life (대학생이 인식하는 삶의 의미에 대한 내용분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the way university students appreciate the meaning of life. The subjects were 1, 2, 3, and 4 grade students from four universities located in Gyeonggido and Gangwondo Provinces; This study was a descriptive research project conducted from March to June 2015 for the purpose of understanding how university students appreciate the meaning of life. The data, gathered from interviews with a number of university students, who are at the last stage of adolescence, were classified into 102 statements and 30 categories through a series of content analyses of certain subjects, such as the definition and importance of the meaning of life, the endeavor to make life meaningful, the moments they feel the meaning of life, and the methods they adopt to feel the meaning of life. We analyzed the ways in which university students appreciate the meaning of life. We hope this study will provide a small guide for them so that the meaning of their lives can be enriched and their feeling of well-being enhanced. In addition, it is necessary to develop appropriate measures for college students to deal with crises in their life and, thus, the results of this study could be used as an important material for the systematic development of support programs for college students. Finally, this study will provide the basis for multifaceted interventions designed to improve the physical and mental health of college students and help them to adapt to college life.

The development of the teaching.learning process plan applying Keller's motive induction strategy to 'Nutrition and Meal' unit of the revised 7th middle school home economics curriculum (Keller의 동기유발 전략을 적용한 중학교 가정 '영양과 식사' 단원 교수.학습 과정안 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a teaching learning process plan applying Keller's motive induction strategy to 'Nutrition and Meal' unit of the middle school home economics(HE). Five different problems were developed based on the 7th revised HE curriculum: "What should I do for a physical and mental health?", "What should I do to intake a required nutrient of my body?", "What should I do to take a well balanced diet?", "What should I do to build a desirable eating habits?" and "What should I do to deal with a nutrition issues?". This study was performed as the following procedures: the 'Nutrition and Meal' unit of the revised 7th middle school HE curriculum and the present HE textbooks were analyzed. And then the teaching learning process plan was designed, developed, evaluated, and revised. The motive induction strategies were developed based on the Keller's Motivational Tactics Checklist.
