  • Display is an essence in human-machine communication interface. As mobile environment such as internet of things (IOT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) progress, importance of display increases. Here we review research trend in flexible organic light emitting displays (OLEDs). This review article covers all the components consisting of flexible OELDs and shows direction of the recent research. This paper would be helpful for readers and researchers working in this field and provide perspective for future displays.

  • We report simple techniques to manufacture low-powered, high-resolution, reflective cholesteric displays using flexible plastic substrates. We use wax transfer printing to replace photo-lithography and incorporate polymer walls to increase the mechanical strength and lifetime of the displays. These printing methods can easily be adapted to roll-to-roll production.

  • A plastic substrate for flexible display is developed. The gas barrier and optical properties of the substrate is improved through depositing silicon oxide/nitride layer and coating polymer layer on plastic film by sputtering process and wet coating process. Roll to roll processes will guarantee the productivity in the whole production process of the plastic substrate.

  • A new flexible TFT backplane structure with improved mechanical reliability is proposed. Amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (a-IGZO) thin film transistors based on this structure have been fabricated on a polyimide substrate, and the resultant mechanical durability has been evaluated in a cyclic bending test. The panel can withstand 10,000 bending cycles at a bending radius of 5 mm without any noticeable TFT degradation. After 10K bending cycles, the change of threshold voltage, mobility, sub-threshold slope, and gate leakage current were only -0.22V, -0.13$cm^2$/V-s, -0.05V/decade, and $-3.05{\times}10^{-13}A$, respectively.

  • A plastic substrate for flexible display is developed. The gas barrier property in the substrate is improved through depositing metal and metal oxide multi layer on plastic film by PVD process. The metal/metal-oxide multiplayer on plastic film shows excellent gas barrier property and optical property.

  • Electronic Paper Displays (EPDs) incorporating electrophoretic foils have made digital reading as pleasant as reading normal print. We will report on progress to replace glass-based displays with light and robust plastic EPDs using only a few extra process steps in a standard TFT-LCD factory.

  • We fabricated a flexible ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) device containing polymer walls and networks which fix plastic film substrates. The device using 100-${\mu}m$-thick substrates could be bent in a radius of 7mm without disordering the FLC alignment. When sandwiched between polarizers a roll-up display with high-speed grayscale capability for moving-image displays was created.

  • Various manufacturing methods are analyzed by using manufacturing metrics to validate which method would be applicable to flexible microelectronics. Among others, Roll-to-Roll method is revealed to inherently have an excessive WIP resulting in long cycle time and limited diversity as well as low equipment efficiency.

  • We present highly polarized light emissions from an OLED on a flexible photonic anisotropic substrate. It was found that the polarization direction of emitted electroluminescent light corresponded to the ordinaryaxis of the photonic anisotropic substrate. Furthermore, it was also found that luminous polarized electroluminescence over 4,500 cd/$m^2$ was produced with high peak efficiency of 6 cd/A and high polarization ratio over 25.
