Micro-tensile testing system has been developed and micro-tensile tests for copper foil have been carried out. The system consisted of a micro tensile loading system and a micro-ESPI system for measuring strain. The loading system has a maximum loading capacity of 50N and a stroke resolution of 4.5nm. Stress-strain curves for the electro-deposited copper foil with the thickness of 18$\mu\textrm{m}$ were obtained, and tensile properties, including elastic modulus, yielding strength and tensile strength, were determined. The tensile properties obtained under three different conditions of testing speed showed a dependency on the speed.
Mechanical property evaluation of micrometer-sized structures is necessary to help design reliable microelectromechanical systems(MEMS) devices. Most material properties are known to exhibit dependence on specimen size and such properties of microscale structures are not well characterized. This paper describes techniques developed for tensile testing of materials used in MEMS. Epi-polycrystalline silicon is currently the most widely used material, and its tensile strength has been measured as 1.52GPa. We have developed an uniaxial testing machine for testing microscale specimen using electro-magnetic actuator. The field magnet and the moving coil taken from an audio-speaker were utilized as the components of the actuator. Structure of specimen was designed and manufactured for easy handling and alignment. In addition to the static tensile tests, new techniques and procedures for measuring strength are described.
It is well known that during tensile testing, a part of the mechanical work done on the specimen is transformed into heat energy. However, the ultimate temperature rise and the rate of temperature rise is related to the nature of the material, conditions of the test and also to the deformation behaviour of the material during loading. The recent advances in infrared sensors and image/data processing techniques enable observation and quantitative analysis of the heat energy dissipated during such tensile tests. In this study, infrared imaging technique has been used to characterise the tensile deformation in AISI type 316 nuclear grade stainless steel. Apart from identifying the different stages during tensile deformation, the technique provided an accurate full-field temperature image by which the point and time of strain localization could be identified. The technique makes it possible to visualise the region of deformation and failure and also predict the exact region of fracture in advance. The effect of thermal gradients on plastic flow in the case of interrupted straining revealed that the interruption of strain and restraining at a lower strain rate not only delays the growth of the temperature gradient, but the temperature rise per unit strain decreases. The technique is a potential NDE tool that can be used for on-line detection of thermal gradients developed during extrusion and metal forming process which can be used for ensuring uniform distribution of plastic strain.
This paper is concerned with manufacturing technology of thin foil tensile specimen using CIP(Cold Isostatic Press) and measurement of precision mechanical property. This thin foil tensile specimen manufacturing technology is a method that can make a metal thin foil specimen for micro tensile testing. We can get a burr free micro metallic thin foil specimen using this technology. For testing mechanical property of this micro thin foil, we use a nano scale material testing machine that was developed by KITECH. In this paper, micro tensile specimens of nickel and copper thin foil are fabricated with CIP and precision mechanical properties of these materials could be measured. We will expect that precision mechanical property of micro/nano material and component. Micro and Nano mechanical property can be measured using this technology and mechanical property data base of micro/nano material and component can be constructed.

PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to analyze and evaluate the behavior of orthotropic steel bridge deck pavement using three-dimensional finite element analysis and full-scale wheel load testing. METHODS: Since the layer thickness and material properties used in the bridge deck pavement are different from its condition, it is very difficult to measure and access the behavior of bridge deck pavement in the field. To solve this problem, the full-scale wheel load testing was conducted on the PSMA/Mastic bridge deck pavement and the deflection of bridge deck and horizontal tensile strain on top of pavement were measured under the loading condition. Three-dimensional finite element analysis was conducted to predict the behavior of bridge deck pavement and the predicted deflection and tensile strain values are compared with measured values from the wheel loading testing. RESULTS: Test results showed that the predicted deflections are 10% lower than measured ones and the error between predicted and measured horizontal tensile strain values is less than 2% in the critical location. CONCLUSIONS: The fact indicates that the proposed the analysis is found to be accurate for estimating the behavior of bridge deck pavements.
To evaluate the mechanical properties of in-service materials, tensile properties measurement using small-scaled specimen has been carried out. Tensile testing specimens with various dimensions, including standard and sub-size specimen specified in ASTM and ISO and small-scaled specimen, were prepared. Tensile strain in small-scaled specimen was measured using micro-ESPI system set up in this study. This system was used in the specimen with the parallel length of 2 mm and in subsequently measuring the strain under tensile loading. From each type of tensile specimen, stress-strain curves were determined. The dimension effect of the tensile properties was investigated comparing the tensile results obtained from standard specimens and small-scaled specimens. It was shown that the tensile strength for the small-scaled specimen is lower by 15% than those for the standard specimen.
This study examined the effects of the testing temperature on the mechanical properties of the stainless steels (STS301CSP-3/4H and STS301CSP-H) for flat spring. Hardness test and fatigue test were performed at room temperature (2$0^{\circ}C$ Tensile testandcreeptestwere performed attemperature range 2$0^{\circ}C$~10$0^{\circ}C$. The micro-victors hardness values of STS301CSP-3/4H and STS301CSP-H were HV=443 and HV=488. respectively. The Elastic modulus, tensile strength, yield strength and strain of these materials were decreased with increasing testing temperature. respectively. The maximum creep strain for 100hr atcreep temperature (10$0^{\circ}C$~20$0^{\circ}C$ and creep stress (Tensile strength$\times$50%) of these materials were 0.53%~0.58%. The fatigue limit of STS301CSP-3/4H and STS301CSP-H were 64.5Kgf/mm$^2$ and 67.4Kgf/mm$^2$, respectively.
The relationships between the microstructure changes, retained austenite volume and elevated temperature tensile properties of Mo-Ni-Cu ADI corresponding to various austempering temperatures and time were investigated, After the $250^{\circ}C$ tensile test for the test piece austempered at $270^{\circ}C$ the accicular bainite structure was observed blunted under room temperature microscope. In the case of $370^{\circ}C$ austempering, the feathery bainite lath spacing was observed broadened. But after the $450^{\circ}C$ tensile test, bainitic features could not be observed. As the testing temperature increased, retained austenite volume tested at room temperature decreased. Especially, after the $450^{\circ}C$ tensile test retained austenite volume approached nearly to zero. A little higher tensile properties appeared at $250^{\circ}C$ testing than those at room temperature.
Several in-situ testing methods of adhesively bonded joints under static short-time tensile loading are critically analyzed in terms of experimental procedure and data evaluation. Due to its rather homogeneous stress state across the glue line, the tensile-shear test with thick single-lap specimens, according to ISO 11003-2, has become the most important test process for the determination of realistic materials parameters. This basic method, which was improved in both, the experimental part by stepped adherends and easily attachable extensometers and the evaluation procedure by numeric substrate deformation correction and test simulation based on the finite element method (FEM), is therefore demonstrated by application to several kinds of adhesives and metallic adherends. Multi-axial load decreases the strength of a joint. This effect, which is illustrated by an experimental comparison, impedes the derivation of realistic mechanical characteristics from measured force-displacement curves. It is shown by numeric modeling that tensile-shear tests with thin plate substrates according to ISO 4587, which are widely used for quick industrial quality assurance, reveal an inhomogeneous stress state, especially because of relatively large adherend deformation. Complete experimental determination of the elastic properties of bonded joints requires independent measurement of at least two characteristics. As the thick-adherend tensile-shear test directly yields the shear modulus, the tensile butt-joint test according to ISO 6922 represents the most obvious complement of the test programme. Thus, validity of analytical correction formulae proposed in literature for the derivation of realistic materials characteristics is verified by numeric simulation. Moreover, the influence of the substrate deformation is examined and a FEM correction method introduced.
