  • Using tetrameric ${\beta}$-galactosidase as a model protein, anchoring motives were screened in Bacillus subtilis spore display system. Eleven spore coat proteins were selected considering their expression levels and the location in the spore coat layer. After chromosomal single-copy homologous integration in the amyE site of Bacillus subtilis chromosome, cotE and cotG were chosen as possible spore surface anchoring motives with their higher whole cell ${\beta}$-galactosidase activity. PAGE and Wester blot of extracted fraction of outer layer of purified spore, which express CotE-LacZ or CotG-LacZ fusion verified the existence of exact size of fusion protein and its location in outer coat layer of purified spore. ${\beta}$-galactosidase activity of spore with CotE-LacZ or CotG-LacZ fusion reached its highest value around 16~20 h of culture time in terms of whole cell and purified spore. After intensive spore purification with lysozyme treatment and renografin treatment, spore of BJH135, which expresses CotE-LacZ, retained only 1~2% of its whole cell ${\beta}$-galactosidase activity. Whereas spore of BJH136, which has cotG-lacZ cassette in the chromosome, retained 10~15% of its whole cell ${\beta}$-galactosidase activity, proving minor perturbation of CotG-LacZ, when incorporated in the spore coat layer of Bacillus subtilis compared to CotE-LacZ. Usage of Bacillus subtilis WB700, of which 7 proteases are knocked-out and thereby resulting in 99.7% decrease in protease activity of the host, did not prevent the proteolytic degradation of spore surface expressed CotG-LacZ fusion protein.

  • Background Volar plate avulsion fracture of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint is one of the most common hand injuries. In this study, we divided patients into two groups: patients with pure volar plate avulsion fracture, and patients with volar plate avulsion fracture concomitant with collateral ligament rupture. The purpose of this study was to compare long-term surgical outcomes between the two groups. As a secondary measure, the Mitek bone anchoring and polydioxanone (PDS) bone suturing techniques were compared. Methods A single-institutional retrospective review of the surgical treatment of volar plate avulsion fracture was performed. The cases were divided into those with pure volar plate avulsion fracture (group A, n=15) and those with volar plate avulsion fracture concomitant with collateral ligament rupture (group B, n=15). Both groups underwent volar plate reattachment using Mitek bone anchoring or PDS bone suturing followed by 2 weeks of immobilization in a dorsal protective splint. Results The average range of motion of the PIP joint and extension lag were significantly more favorable in group A (P<0.05). Differences in age; follow-up period; flexion function; visual analog scale scores; disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand scores; and the grip strength ratio between the two groups were non-significant. No significant differences were found in the surgical outcomes of Mitek bone anchoring and PDS bone suturing in group A. Conclusions Overall, the surgical outcomes of volar plate reattachment were successful irrespective of whether the collateral ligaments were torn. However, greater extension lag was observed in cases of collateral ligament injury.

  • This article describes an enzyme stabilization method that allows the use of enzymes irrespective of environmental factors, especially heat, while maintaining their activity for a long time. We have designed enzyme microcapsules that consist of papain enzyme cores, poly(propylene glycol) interlayers, and poly(${\epsilon}-caprolactone$) walls. By confocal laser scanning microscopy measurements and the thermal stability of papain-loaded microcapsules, it is demonstrated that the papain is surrounded by a hydrophobic polyol layer and stabilized by the exclusive volume effect. In our study, improved thermal stability can be obtained by using more hydrophobic long-chained polyols, which is understood to be attributed to the effective formation of a hydrophobic polyol layer between the papain and the polymer wall by means of conformational anchoring in the interface.

  • How the characteristics and stability of the rubbing-induced alignment of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) relate to the interfacial characteristics of LC-polyimide has been studied. The characteristics of the LC alignment (such as the LC texture, the pretilt angle, and the anchoring energy) and their thermal stability have been investigated for 5 polyimides synthesized for this work. The work showed that the rubbed polyimide alignment layer induces the strong LC anchoring and that the characteristics and stability of LC alignment are determined by the short-ranged interactions between LC and polyimide molecules at the alignment layer surface. The increased flexibility of the polyimide accelerates thermal imidization, increases the pretilt angle, and improves the alignment stability. It also turned out that fluorination of the polyimide tends to deteriorate the alignment uniformity and stability. No distinct differences in the alignment characteristics were shown for the aromatic- and alicyclic-dianhydride polyimides.

  • One of the most important factors that determine the quality of a stated preference study is questionnaire design. This study introduces strategies for enhancing the rationality and testing for the validity of choice experiments(CE) using "example" choice questions that mimic the main choice questions. From the case study of WTP for reduced radon radiation exposures in the home, the study found that screening out irrational responses, 12% of the effective responses, resulted in a meaningful increase in model fit. Meanwhile the study tested for anchoring effects, as a way of confirming the divergent validity of the study, by looking at equality of models estimated for two subsamples. The overall test results were mixed. The pros and cons of the questionnaire design strategy employed are also reported.

  • The process of charge transfer at the interface between two semiconductors or between a metal and a semiconductor plays an important role in many areas of technology. The optimization of such devices requires a good theoretical description of the interfaces involved. This, in turn, has motivated detailed mechanistic studies of interfacial charge-transfer reactions at metal/organic, organic/organic, and organic/inorganic semiconductor heterojunctions. Charge recombination of photo-induced electron with redox species such as oxidized dyes or triiodide or cationic HTM (hole transporting materials) at the heterogeneous interface of $TiO_2$ is one of main loss factors in liquid junction DSSCs or solid-state DSSCs, respectively. Among the attempts to prevent recombination reactions such as insulating thin layer and lithium ions-doped hole transport materials and introduction of co-adsorbents, although co-adsorbents retard the recombination reactions as hydrophobic energy barriers, little attention has been focused on the anchoring processes. Molecular engineering of heterogeneous interfaces by employing several co-adsorbents with different properties altered the surface properties of $TiO_2$ electrodes, resulting to the improved power conversion efficiency and long-term stability of the DSSCs. In this talk, advantages of the coadsorbent-assisted sensitization of N719 in preparation of DSSCs will be discussed.

  • The dispersion of pigment particles is important because it is capable of increasing the color strength, contrast, and transmittance of color-LCD products. Pigment dispersion properties are very important factors for the quality of LCD color filters. The chemical structure of polymeric dispersants for pigment is important to improve dispersion stability and prevent aggregation or flocculation of pigment in organic or aqueous systems. Polymeric dispersants should contain both anchoring group that interacts with pigment surface and stabilizing group that provides steric stabilization. Moreover, the molecular weight and composition of block copolymer have the an effect on pigment dispersion. In this study, adequate dispersants, block copolymers containing (2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate as anchoring group and oligo(ethylene oxide)methyl ether methacrylate as a stabilizing group were designed and synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization in order to prepare well-defined structure, molecular weight and composition.

  • In this study, the anchoring performance of 57mm headed bars anchored at the external beam-column joint under cyclic loading was evaluated. A total of 6 external beam-column joint test specimens were planned, and anchorage performance was evaluated by setting concrete compressive strength, side covering thickness, lateral reinforcement ratio, and fracture type as major experimental variables. As result of cyclic loading test, it was found that the factors that had the greatest influence on the anchoring capacity of the large-diameter headed bar anchored at the joint were the side cover thickness and the transverse reinforcing bar. It was confirmed that the 57mm large-diameter headed bar anchored at the external beam-column joint showed sufficient anchoring capacity even under cyclic loading.

  • The anchorage among harbour facilities should ensure sufficient water surface area for safe anchoring. A general method is to consider the L.O.A of the target ship and the depth and bottom quality of anchorage to calculate the water surface area of anchorage. However, the gross tonnage is used as a unit of the ship capacity standard of anchorage based on the detailed rules for harbour facilities operation in Korea. In this study, the gross tonnage is converted to L.O.A to calculate the actual anchoring radius of the target ship. This actual anchoring radius exceeds at 25 anchorages (among 90 anchorages) compared with the designated water surface area. Therefore, as an improvement plan of the ship capacity standard for anchorage, L.O.A should be used as a unit for anchorage based on the detailed rules for harbour facilities operation and related Korean maritime laws.
