Comparison of Some Anatomical Characteristics between Eunsasi Poplar and Konara Oak

  • This study was carried out to identify the differences of some macro and microanatomical features between Eunsasi poplar (Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee) and Konara oak (Quercus serrata Thunb.). Anatomical features such as vessel and fiber diameter, cross sectional area of ray parenchyma and endwall pit aperture diameter in ray parenchyma were compared. Differences of anatomical features between two species were found statistically significant. Earlywood vessel diameter in poplar and oak increased from pith to bark while it was found almost stable in latewood. Fiber diameter in poplar was higher than oak fiber. Ray area and the pit aperture diameter in endwall of ray parenchyma were found higher in oak than those in poplar.

세침흡인 검사로 진단된 갑상선 유두상 암종의 세포학적 소견 (Cytologic Feature of Papillary Carcinoma of the Thyroid)

  • Fine needle aspiration biopsy cytology (FNA) is an important diagnostic tool in the management of thyroid nodule. Especially, papillary carcinoma of the thyroid has distinct morphologic features that allow a definite cytologic diagnosis with high degree of accuracy. We examined the characteristic cytologic features of 57 cases of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid, and their frequency and diagnostic significance were evaluated. The results obtained are summerized as follows; 1. In pattern of cellular arrangement, papillary structure with or without stroma is predominant feature (96%). 2. In individual cell morphology, grooved nuclei (95%), intranuclear cytoplasmic invagination (89%) and nuclear lobulation (74%) are most frequent and important cytologic findings. 3. Chromatin pattern is usually fine. Coarse chromatin is infrequent finding (37%). Nucleoli are inconspicuous. Cytoplasm us plump and distinctly eosinophilic. 4. Psammoma bodies are identified only in 4 cases (7%), but they are considered as helpful diagnostic features. 5. There are other associated findings including multinucleated giant cells (51%), macrophages (37%) and cystic degeneration (16%).

간의 전이성 상피암 20예의 세침 천자 흡인시 배경 병변의 세포학적 소견 (Background Cytologic Features of Metastatic Carcinomas in the Liver in Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology - Analysis of 20 Cases -)

  • Liver is generally known as an organ which is most commonly involved by the metastic tumors. According to the tendency of using fine needle aspiration in the diagnosis of hepatic tumors, the differentital diagnosis between hepatocellular carcinoma and metastatic carcinoma frequently has been a main issue in the poorly differentitated cases, especially to the pathologists of Korea, an endemic area of hepatocellular carcinoma. Until now the problem has been usually solved by the comparison of cytologic characteristics of their tumor cells but not by background cytologic features which rarely have been studied. We observed the background cytologic features helpful for the differential diagnosis through the analysis of 20 cases who had confirmed primary cancer and were diagnosed as metastatic carcinomas in the liver by fine needle aspiration cytology. Twenty cases included 9 adenocarcinomas, 7 spuamous cell carcinomas, 1 small cell carcinoma, 1 carcinoid, 1 adenoid cystic carcinoma, and 1 renal cell cacinoma. Analysis of background cytologic features revealed that 77% of adenocacinoma cases showed benign mesenchymal components and hepatocytes and spuamous cell carcinoma cases disclosed benign mesenchymal tissue (71%) and necrosis (57%), Remaining cases showed variable combinations of benign mesenchymal component, necrosis, hepatocytes, and bile duct epithelial cells. No case revealed atypical hepatocytic naked nuclei, a useful cytologic finding of hepatocellular carcinoma. In summary, the background cytologic features more commonly observed in metastatic carcinomas than in the hepatocellular carcinoma were benign mesenchymal components, hepatocytes, necrosis, and bile duct epithelium. The endothelial cells and hepatocytic naked nuclei, two relatively specific findings of hepatocellular carcinoma were not observed except for renal ceil carcinoma. Above background cytologic features are thought to be helpful for the differential diagnosis between the hepatocellular carcinoma and various metastatic carcinomas in the poorly differentiated cases.

Comparative Wood Anatomy of Stem and Root in Lindera erythrocarpa Makino

  • Stem and root of Lindera erythrocarpa were described and compared in the wood anatomical aspects. Root wood appeared to differ from stem wood in the qualitative features of growth ring boundary, extraneous materials in vessel element and ray parenchyma cell, outline of ray, and sheath cell. In the quantitative features, there were differences between these two tissues in vessels per square millimeter, tangential diameter of vessel lumina, length of vessel element, and width of ray. These wood anatomical differences between stem above ground and root below ground were thought to be attributed to their different growth environments.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate characteristics of cell morphology of two different agar woods (Aquilaria agallocha Roxburgh (AAR) and imitative agar wood (IAW)) using microscopic techniques. Methods : Both light and scanning electron microscopes were used to observe morphological and histological features of the cell of agar woods collected from commercial products in the market. Results : The cell morphology and tissue arrangements of AAR depending on either the adsorption of resin into vessels or no adsorption of resin were observed to compare these features with those of both IAW and Aquilaria sinensis Gilb (ASG). Conclusions : As a result, the vessels of AAR with the resin adsorption was packed with lots of yellow-brownish materials, which were quite different from those of IAW and ASG. The cell walls were thick, and had well-developed traumatic parenchyma tissues with squared cells of the same height and width, which appeared as a clump of small grains packed.

고흡음성 목재의 흡음성능과 구조적 특징 (Sound Absorption Capability and Anatomical Features of Highly Sound Absorptive Wood)

  • 일본산 산공재 중 구조적 특징이 목재흡음에 적합하다고 사료되는 카기카즈라목재의 흡음성능과 구조적 특징을 관찰하고자 목재횡단방향으로 원반형시험편을 채취하여 구조적 특징을 관찰하고, 전달함수법으로 흡음율을 측정하였다. 측정주파수범위에서 카기카즈라 횡단면의 흡음율은 0.30에서 0.50의 수치를 나타내었다. 비교수종인 낙엽송시험편보다 2~3배 높은 흡음율을 나타내었으며, 특히 2~4 KHz의 주파수영역에서는 50% 전후로 높은 흡음율을 나타내었다. 카기카즈라목재의 횡단면에서는 다수의 커다란 도관이 존재하고 이들 도관요소들은 단일천공판으로 연결되어 다공질형흡음에 유용한 연속된 모세관이 다량 존재하는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다.

Comparative Wood Anatomy of Stem and Root in Korean-grown Yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipipfera L.)

  • This study was carried out to offer basic information on the wood anatomy of domestic yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.), a new plantation species selected by Korea Forest Service as one of the promising hardwood and bioenergy sources of the future, through comparison of stem wood with root wood in the qualitative and quantitative features. In the qualitative anatomical features, growth rings were distinct in stem wood but relatively less distinct in root wood. And stem wood appeared to have pores in radial multiples of 2 to 5, sometimes clusters but root wood to have pores in radial multiples of 2 to 3, rarely clusters. And numbers of bars in scalariform perforation plates were somewhat numerous in vessel elements of root wood than in those of stem wood. Interestingly, on the other hand, more extraneous materials in the wood rays of tap root than in those of lateral root and stem were confirmed in the chemical composition analyses. In the quantitative anatomical features, pore densities were significantly greater but vessel elements were considerably narrower in stem wood than in root wood. Vessel elements and wood fibers of root wood were considerably longer than those of stem wood. Rays were somewhat more numerous in stem wood than in root wood, and only ray heights of stem wood were more or less greater in cell numbers but both ray heights and widths of stem wood were lower in dimension than those of root wood. The anatomical differences between stem wood and root wood were thought to be associated with different growth environments between the stem above ground and the root below ground.

인삼 엽록체의 미세구조와 Photobleaching (Ultrastructural Feature and Photobleaching of ginseng Chloroplasts)

  • Ultrastructural and anatomical features of the leaf were studied in Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer(ginseng). The ginseng leaf poorly developed palisade tissue and the size of mesophyll cell was larger and the chloroplast density was lower than that of Glycine max (soyben). Ginseng chloroplast was filled with highly stacked grana and condensely-arrayed thylakoid, so the stroma space was hardly absorbed. However, ginseng mesophyll tissue and chloroplast array did not reduce light energy entering the mesophyll chloroplast, and the high LHCP/CP ratio of ginseng thylakoid resulted in the absorption of excess photon. It is reasonable to assume that 1O1-photogenearation by excess light energy partially resulted from the anatomical and ultrastructural characteristics of the ginseng leaf.

은행나무 유식물에 있어서 반응조직의 분화에 대한 해부학적 연구 (Anatomical Studies on the Differentiation of Reaction Tissues in Ginkgo biloba L. Seedling)

  • In order to elucidate the formation of reaction tissues during the transition from primary to secondary growth, the developmental anatomy was conducted in the first internode of Ginkgo biloba seedling in horizontal position. The righting of the horizontal first internode took place at the middle portion and gradually proceeded to the base during the primary growth. Reaction tissues were formed corresponding to the righting movement in the horizontal first internode. During the transition from primary to secondary growth, compression wood was gradually developed on the lower side only. The anatomical features of compression wood also extended longitudinally to the lower side of the vertical portion where it coincided with the lower side of the horizontal first internode occurs acropetally from basal to apical portion. Eventually, some of the anatomical features of compression wood occurred at the primary growth. And the typical compression wood is gradually established during the secondary growth. On the other hand, the lower side tracheid and ray were longer and higher than those of the upper side in the horizontal first internode. However, difference in the width of ray was not observed between the lower and upper sides.
