The ANSYS software and experimental method are used for the verification of the analytical equations with boundary conditions. Through the sensitivity analysis, the most dominant design parameter can be detected. The optimum design parameters for improving the given performances are selected by using the optimiza- tion algorithm. • Recently, high-speed centrifugal turbo-compressors have been under intensive research and development. Since, compared to conventional compressors, high-speed centrifugal compressors hive numerous qualities such as simple structure, light weight small size, and high efficiency, etc. In cope with such industrial demands, a high-speed brushless DC motor for a 50-kW, 70-krpm turbo-compressor was developed based on a 2-D analytical method, of which design was verified using the FE analysis. A prototype machine was also fabricated and tested to confirm the analytical design. Preliminarily obtained experimental data using the prototype mac]line shows the validity of the analytical approach.

  • Maintaining adequate sealing in engine cylinder head is a crucial factor in engine design. Failure of engine operations occurs mainly owing to the leaking by decreased sealing pressure. Reliability-robustness concept is applied to the engine cylinder head system. Deterministic way to obtain engineering solution in CAE industry may not consider the effects of noises and disturbances experienced during operation. However, analytical reliability-robustness concept may make possible to reduce the sensitivity of system with noise factors. Influences of design factors including noise factors would be predicted in analytical way. Optimized design may be obtained by shrinking variability and shifting to design target. Three-dimensional finite element analyses have been performed to apply analytical reliability-robustness concept.

  • Permanent magnet flux switching motor (PMFSM) is a novel double salient machine which employs PMs instead of field winding for excitation. PMFSM contains only one set of armature winding, thereby features simple control strategy, low cost power inverter and substantial high efficiency. Due to the unique double salient structure and operation principle, the generated cogging torque in PMFSM is critical and quite different compared to the traditional PM machines. This paper presents and investigates various design techniques for reducing cogging torque in PMFSM. Firstly, an analytical model is proposed to study the influence of different methods on cogging torque. Then the optimal design parameters for minimizing cogging torque are determined by the analytical model, which significantly reduces the computational efforts. At last, the cogging torque with different design approaches are simulated by FEA along with the average output electromagnetic torque, which validates the analysis above.

  • Optimization is an important subject which is widely used in engineering problems. In this paper, an analytical method is developed for optimum design of reinforced concrete beams considering both flexural and shear effects. A closed-form formulation is derived for optimal height and rebar of beams. The total material cost of steel and concrete is considered as the objective function which is minimized during the optimization process. The ultimate flexural and shear capacities of the beam are considered as the main constraints. The ultimate limit state is considered for deriving the relations for flexural capacity of the beam. The design requirements are considered according to the item 9 of the Iranian National Building. Analytical formulas and some curves are proposed to be used for optimum design of RC beams. The proposed method can be used to perform the optimization of RC beams without the need of any prior knowledge in optimization. Also, the results of the studied numerical example show that the proposed method results in a better design comparing with the other methods.

  • Analytical solutions have been derived to delineate the capture zone created by pumping wells for the remediation design of contaminated groundwater. These previous analytical solutions are often restricted to pumping wells only, specific well locations, a limited number of wells, and an isotropic aquifer. Analytical solution was developed to deal with arbitrarily located multi injection-pumping wells in an anisotropic homogeneous aquifer. The solution presented in this study provides a simple, easy method for determining tile complex flow field caused by multi injection-pumping wells at different rates, and will consequently be useful in pump-and-treat design.

  • Recently, many countries have attempted to protect their satellites from damage caused by space debris. To design these collision avoidance maneuvers, optimal algorithms based on numerical simulations are widely used due to their practicality. However, these algorithms often require a great expenditure of time in order to find solutions. Therefore, in this paper, a simple analytical strategy is suggested to find the initial prediction required to find these numerical solutions for collision avoidance maneuvers by using relative dynamics for the rendezvous and docking problems. For this analytical strategy, the simple dynamics on the CW (Clohessy-Wiltshire) frame is adopted as an attempt to introduce an analytical solution.

  • Ball bearings are a major component of mechanical parts for transmitting rotation. Compared to tapered roller bearings, ball bearings offer less rolling resistance, which leads to reduced heat generation during operation. Because of these characteristics, ball bearings are widely used in electric vehicles and machine tools. The design of ball bearing cages has recently emerged as a major issue in ball bearing design. Cage design requires pre-verification of performance using theoretical or experimental formula or computational fluid dynamics (CFD). However, CFD analysis is time-consuming, making it difficult to apply in case studies for design decisions and is mainly used in performance prediction following design confirmation. To use CFD in the early stages of design, main-taining analytical accuracy while reducing the time required for analysis are necessary. Accordingly, this study proposes a laminar steady-state segment CFD technique to solve the problem of long CFD analytical times and to enable the use of CFD analysis in the early stages of design. To verify the reliability of the CFD analysis, a bearing drag torque test is performed, and the results are compared with the analytical results. The proposed laminar steady-state segment CFD technique is expected to be useful for case studies in bearing design, including cage design.

  • The present study is focused on the behavior and design of perforated steel storage rack columns under axial compression. These columns may exhibit different types of behavior and levels of strength owing to their peculiar features including their complex cross-section forms and perforations along the member. In the present codes of practice, the design of these columns is carried out using analytical formulas which are supported by experimental tests described in the relevant code document. Recently proposed analytical approaches are used to estimate the load carrying capacity of axially compressed steel storage rack columns. Experimental and numerical studies were carried out to verify the proposed approaches. The experimental study includes compression tests done on members of different lengths, but of the same cross-section. A comparison between the analytical and the experimental results is presented to identify the accuracy of the recently proposed analytical approaches. The proposed approach includes modifications in the Direct Strength Method to include the effects of perforations (the so-called reduced thickness approach). CUFSM and CUTWP software programs are used to calculate the elastic buckling parameters of the studied members. Results from experimental and analytical studies compared very well. This indicates the validity of the recently proposed approaches for predicting the ultimate strength of steel storage rack columns.
