  • This paper presents analytical and numerical simulation approaches on charging characteristics of no-insulation (NI) REBCO pancake coil by using the equivalent circuit model to estimate magnetic performance response in the coil. The analytical methods provide closed form or definite solution in the form of complete mathematical expressions but they are hard to solve the complex problems. Numerical methods have become popular with the development of the computing capabilities to solve the problems which are impossible or very hard to solve analytically. First of all, the equivalent circuit model are proposed to develop the simulation code for both analytical and numerical method. The charging test was performed under critical current to obtain magnetic field induced and terminal voltage through the radial as well as spiral current paths within the coil. To verify the validity of both proposed methods, the simulation results were compared and discussed with the experimental results.

  • Three methods for design sensitivity such as numerical differentiation, analytical method and semi-analytical method have been developed for the last three decades. Although analytical design sensitivity analysis is exact, it is hard to implement for practical design problems. Therefore, numerical method such as finite difference method is widely used to simply obtain the design sensitivity in most cases. The numerical differentiation is sufficiently accurate and reliable for most linear problems. However, it turns out that the numerical differentiation is inefficient and inaccurate because its computational cost depends on the number of design variables and large numerical errors can be included especially in nonlinear design sensitivity analysis. Thus semi-analytical method is more suitable for complicated design problems. Moreover semi-analytical method is easy to be performed in design procedure, which can be coupled with an analysis solver such as commercial finite element package. In this paper, implementation procedure for the semi-analytical design sensitivity analysis outside of the commercial finite element package is studied and computational technique is proposed, which evaluates the pseudo-load for design sensitivity analysis easily by using the design variation of corresponding internal nodal forces. Errors in semi-analytical design sensitivity analysis are examined and numerical examples are illustrated to confirm the reduction of numerical error considerably.

Although analytical design sensitivity analysis can provide very exact result, it is difficult to implement into practical design problems. In this paper, implementation procedure fur the semi-analytical design sensitivity analysis outside of the commercial finite element package is studied and the computational technique is proposed for evaluating the partial differentiation of internal nodal force, so called pseudo-load. Numerical examples coupled with commercial finite element package are shown to verify usefulness of proposed semi-analytical sensitivity analysis procedure and computational technique for pseudo-load.

  • Estimation of groundwater inflow into underground opening is of critical importance for the design and construction of underground structures. Groundwater inflow into a pilot underground storage facility in China was estimated using analytical equations, numerical modeling and field measurement. The applicability of analytical and numerical methods was examined by comparing the estimated and measured results. Field geological investigation indicated that in local scale the high groundwater inflows are associated with the appearance of open joints, fractured zone or dykes induced by shear and/or tensile tectonic stresses. It was found that 8 groundwater inflow spots with high inflow rates account for about 82% of the total rate for the 9 caverns. On the prediction of the magnitude of groundwater inflow rate, it was found that could both (Finite Element Method) FEM and (Discrete Element Method) DEM perform better than analytical equations, due to the fact that in analytical equations simplified assumptions were adopted. However, on the prediction of the spatial distribution estimation of groundwater inflow, both analytical and numerical methods failed to predict at the present state. Nevertheless, numerical simulations would prevail over analytical methods to predict the distribution if more details in the simulations were taken into consideration.

  • In this paper the dynamic behavior of a viscoelastic Timoshenko beam subjected to a concentrated moving load are studied analytically and numerically. The viscoelastic properties of the beam obey the linear standard model in shear and incompressible in bulk. The governing equation for Timoshenko beam theory is obtained in viscoelastic form using the correspondence principle. The analytical solution is based on the Fourier series and the numerical solution is performed with finite element method. The effects of the material properties and the load velocity are investigated on the responses by numerical and analytical methods. In addition, the results are compared with the Euler beam results.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the frictionless double receding contact problem for two functionally graded (FG) layers pressed with a uniformly distributed load and resting on a homogeneous half plane (HP) using analytical and numerical methods. The FG layers are made of a non-homogeneous material with an isotropic stress-strain law with exponentially varying properties. It is assumed that the contact at the FG layers and FG layer-HP interface is frictionless. The body force of the FG layers and homogeneous HP are ignored in the study. Firstly, an analytical solution for the contact problem has been realized using the theory of elasticity and the Fourier integral transform techniques. Then, the problem modeled and two-dimensional analysis was carried out by using the ANSYS package program based on FEM. Numerical results for contact lengths and contact pressures between FG layers and FG layer-HP were provided for various dimensionless quantities including material inhomogeneity, distributed load width, the shear module ratio, and the heights of the FG layers for both methods. The results obtained using FEM were compared with the results found using the analytical formulation. It was found that the results obtained from analytical formulation were in perfect agreement with the FEM study.

  • Two $Chang-{\alpha}$ dissipative family methods and two $KR-{\alpha}$ family methods were developed for time integration recently. Although the four family methods are in the category of the dissipative structure-dependent integration methods, their performances may be drastically different due to the detrimental property of weak instability or overshoot for the two $KR-{\alpha}$ family methods. This weak instability or overshoot will result in an adverse overshooting behavior or even numerical instability. In general, the four family methods can possess very similar numerical properties, such as unconditional stability, second-order accuracy, explicit formulation and controllable numerical damping. However, the two $KR-{\alpha}$ family methods are found to possess a weak instability property or overshoot in the high frequency responses to any nonzero initial conditions and thus this property will hinder them from practical applications. Whereas, the two $Chang-{\alpha}$ dissipative family methods have no such an adverse property. As a result, the performances of the two $Chang-{\alpha}$ dissipative family methods are much better than for the two $KR-{\alpha}$ family methods. Analytical assessments of all the four family methods are conducted in this work and numerical examples are used to confirm the analytical predictions.

  • In this work, we compare the analytical solutions with the numerical solutions for photothermal interactions in semiconductor medium containing cylindrical cavity. This paper is devoted to a study of the photothermal interactions in semiconductor medium in the context of the coupled photo-thermal model. The basic equations are formulated in the domain of Laplace transform and the eigenvalue scheme are used to get the analytical solutions. The numerical solution is obtained by using the implicit finite difference method (IFDM). A comparison between the analytical solution and the numerical solutions are obtained. It is found that the implicit finite difference method (IFDM) is applicable, simple and efficient for such problems.

  • In the analysis of circular cylindrical shell's vibration and sound radiation, there are numerical and analytical methods. Numerical methods such as F.E.M and B.E.M, have the limit of frequency range. Analytical method can be applied to the circular cylindrical shell from low frequency to high frequency. In this paper, we use the analytical method for shell, and numerical method, F.D.M, for fluid. We also use the method using transfer matrix and eigenanalysis of transfer matrix which can therefore calculate the rotational d.o.f that is very imkportant in synthesis with inner structure. Inner structure has much effect on the submerged circular cylindrical shell vibration and sound rediation. Results for the immersed circular cylindrical shell vibration and sound radiation are compared with the analytic solutions.
