  • Wetlands often function as a nutrient sink. It is well known that increased input of nutrient increases the primary productivity but it is not well understood what is the fate of produced biomass in wetland ecosystem. Water and sediment quality, decomposition rate of cellulose, and sediment accumulation rate in 11 montane marshes in northern Sierra Nevada, California were analyzed to trace the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus content in water on nutrient dynamics. Concentrations of ammonium, nitrate, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in water were in the range of 27 to 607, 8 to 73, and 6 to 109 ppb, respectively. Concentrations of ammonium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium in water were the highest in Markleeville, which has been impacted by animal farming. Nitrate and SRP concentrations in water were the highest in Snow Creek, which has been impacted by human residence and a golf course. Cellulose decomposition rates ranged from 4 to 75 % per 90 days and the highest values were measured in Snow Creek. Concentrations of total carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in sediment ranged from 8.0 to 42.8, 0.5 to 3.0, and 0.076 to 0.162 %, respectively. Accumulation rates of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus fluctuated between 32.7 to 97.1, 2.4 to 9.0, and 0.08 to $1.14gm^{-2}yr{-1}$, respectively. Accumulation rates of carbon and nitrogen were highest in Markleeville and that of phosphorus was highest in Lake Van Norden. Correlation analysis showed that decay rate is correlated with ammonium, nitrate, and SRP in water. There was no correlation between element content in sediment and water quality. Nitrogen accumulation rate was correlated with ammonium in water. These results showed that element accumulation rates in montane wetland ecosystems are determined by decomposition rate rather than nutrient input. This study stresses a need for eco-physiological researches on the response of microbial community to increased nutrient input and environmental change because the microbial community is responsible for the decomposition process.

  • Recently, mountain disasters such as landslides and debris flows have flowed along mountain streams and hit residential areas and roads, increasing damage. In this study, in order to reduce damage and analyze causes of mountain disasters, field surveys and Terrestrial LiDAR terrain analysis were conducted targeting debris flow areas, and debris flow flow processes were simulated using FLO-2D and RAMM models, which are numerical models of debris flows. In addition, the debris flow deposition area was calculated and compared and analyzed with the actual occurrence section. The sedimentation area of the debris flow generation section of the LiDAR scan data was estimated to be approximately 21,336 ㎡, and was analyzed to be 20,425 ㎡ in the FLO-2D simulation and 19,275 ㎡ in the case of the RAMMS model. The constructed topographical data can be used as basic data to secure the safety of disaster risk areas.

  • Analysis of high-resolution seismic profiles acquired from the inner shelf off the southern coast of Korea reveals that the inner shelf sequence can be divided into three stratigraphic units formed after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Unit I is characterized by complex seismic facies including semi-transparent, stratified, and hummocky reflections on seismic records. It consists of sandy mud or muddy sand, deposited under estuarine environment during the post-glacial transgression. Unit II acoustically shows semi-transparent or hummocky reflections and consists of sand with gravels and shell debris, produced by shoreface erosion during the transgression. Unit III is characterized by transparent or semi-transparent seismic facies and consists of mud originated from the Nakdong and Seomjin rivers during recent highstand of sea level. Unit III is confined to the inner shelf with an extenal form of stratal wedge.

결국 한자어와 고유어는 기본적으로 외래어와 다른 처리를 보이면 한자어와 고유어 내에서도 한자어는 단어접근 전에 의미접근의 단계를 거쳐야 하지만 고유어는 각 음절이 형태소가 아니기 때문에 바로 어휘에 접근하는 것이라고 할 수 있겠다.ulic geometry and sediment transport has been applied to: (1) gravel-bed transport measurements in a cobble-bed stream at Little Granite Creek, Wyoming; (2) sand and gravel transport by size fraction in the sharp meander bends of Fall River, Colorado; (3) changes in sand dune geometry and resistance to flow during major floods of the Rhine River in the Netherlands; (4) changes in hydraulic geometry of the Rio Grande downstream of Cochiti Dam, New Mexico; and (5) analysis of the influence of water temperature and the Coriolis force on flow velocity and sediment transport of the Lower Mississippi River in Louisiana. • In order to improve dredged area, long time and high cost is needed because of bad engineering and physical conditions. And there is no suitable example of pipe mixing method at domestic site. Moreover, applicability and effectiveness of this method is uncertain and shows different results between site and laboratory test. In order to solve these problems, we determined proper grain size distribution and water content range using dredged soil and reformed material (standard sand & material controlling grain size distribution) in the laboratory test. As a result, we confirmed that coefficient of sediment consolidation is increased and there is an improvement about separation sedimentation. Undrained shear strength was derived by water content of reformed dredging soil through regression analysis of test results. We suggest the correlation equation for determining mixing ratio.

  • Purpose: We investigated whether serum levels of insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and insulin growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) are valuable in predicting clinical outcomes or are correlated with other laboratory findings in children with Henoch-$Sch{\ddot{o}}nlein$ purpura (HSP). Methods: We examined 27 children who were consecutively admitted to our hospital with HSP between January 2011 and February 2012. Blood tests (C-reactive protein, white blood cell count, platelet count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, albumin, immunoglobulin A, complement C3, antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody, IGF-1, IGFBP-3) and urine tests were performed upon admission. IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 were resampled in the recovery phase. Controls included 473 children whose IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 were sampled for evaluating their growth, at the outpatient department of pediatric endocrinology in our hospital. IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 were compared between the HSP children and controls, and between the acute and recovery phases in HSP children. The ability of these values to predict clinical outcomes including renal involvement was analyzed using bivariate logistic regression analysis (BLRA). Results: IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 were not different between the HSP children and controls ($148.7{\pm}117.6$ vs. $69.2{\pm}96.9$, P=0.290: $3465.9{\pm}1290.9$ vs. $3597.2{\pm}1,127.6$, P=0.560, respectively). There was no significant difference in IGF-1 or IGFBP-3 between acute and recovery phases. Based on the BLRA, no variable, including IGF-1 and IGFBP-3, could predict clinical outcomes including the presence of nephritis Conclusion: We concluded that IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 do not predict clinical outcomes of HSP, including renal involvement, in this study.

  • This paper was examined the physical characteristics of floc density of suspended fine particles with varying cohesiveness. The analysis of floc density was performed in a small annular flume with a free water surface under different bed shear stresses and ion addition. Fine-grained silica was used as model material, as it is the main mineral components of clay that affects sedimentation. It was concluded that floc density depended on increasing the bed shear stress, the salinity and pH value. Floc density decreased with increasing the salinity in still water and floc size, whereas the opposite was true when increasing the bed shear stress. Also, it increased at pH6.8 more than at pH4.2 when increasing the bed shear stress in the range from 0.0086 to $0.0132N/m^2$.

  • Polycrystalline mercuric iodide $HgI_2$) films are being developed as a new detector technology for digital x-ray imaging. The $HgI_2$ is generally vacuum deposited by physical vapor deposition (PVD) process. But the PVD thick deposition has been caused any instability in the biasing due to any defects or cracks. In this work we present a new particle-in-binder (PIB) methodologies used for the $HgI_2$ thick films. These growth techniques can be easily extended to produce much larger film areas. This paper, for the first time, presents results and comparison of polycrystalline $HgI_2$ films derived by various PIB methods. We investigated the structural and morphological properties of the films using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The films were characterized with respect to their electrical properties and in response to x-ray photons. Physical and electrical results were also compared between conventional polycrystalline PVD and our detectors. Leakage current as low as $350\;pA/cm^2$ at the bias voltage of ~ 200 V has been observed. And high sensitivity and good linearity in the response to x-rays was obtained in the film derived by PIB sedimentation method. Our future efforts will concentrate on optimization of film growth techniques for uniform large area deposition on image readout arrays.

  • This study aimed to understand the mineral characteristics of the sediment from the summit of Magellan Seamount KC-7. In December 2023, approximately 20 years after the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology conducted an initial field investigation of the sediment from the summit of seamount KC-7 in 2004, were obtained and subjected to mineralogical analysis to determine the essential sedimentary environmental characteristics of the seamount summit. For this purpose, smear slide analysis through a polarized microscope and X-ray diffraction analysis were conducted. The total length of the obtained sediments was 672.7 cm, and they were generally composed of calcareous ooze. In the lower part of the sediments (283.7-672.7 cm), Discoaster groups and coccoliths were predominantly observed. However, in the upper part above 283.7 cm, both coccoliths and foraminifera began to appear together, and in the uppermost sediments (0-151.7 cm), foraminifera became dominant, and the grain size of the sediments increased. This reflects a shift in the marine environment from high temperature and eutrophic conditions to low temperature and oligotrophic conditions as the seamount moved to its current position, aligning with the present oligotrophic environment of the western Pacific. The sediments comprised clay minerals, quartz, feldspar, and calcite. Examining the content changes of the four major mineral groups with depth, calcite was the most predominant, averaging 89.8 wt%. However, towards the upper layers, there was a trend of increasing clay content (up to 12.1 wt%) and decreasing calcite content (down to 85.1 wt%). This indicates that while the sedimentation mechanism remained unchanged, there has been a gradual influx of aeolian sediments.
