  • The significant sedimentation at the estuary in the eastern coast of Korea frequently causes river mouth occlusion where disconnection between the river and sea is observed. River mouth occlusion causing watershed retention raises the environmental risk of the area as it impairs water quality and threatens the area's safety in the event of floods. This study proposes a plan to maintain stability of river channel and flow of flood discharge at the estuary with loss of its function for disaster prevention. To this end, the study tries to change the location and width of stream path, focusing on the center line of stream near the sand bar of river mouth. This allows to identify a shape of stream path that leads the most stable flow. To review the result, this study uses the SRH-2D, a model for two-dimensional hydraulic analysis, and conduct numeric simulation. The simulation result showed that the most effective plan for maintaining the stable flow of running water without having the area sensitive to changes in hydraulic characteristics is to lower the overall river bed height of the sand bar near the center line of stream to a equal level.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the polluted stream water quality by pilot-scale five different constructed wetlands (CWs). Cell 1 to 3 are newly designed 2SFCW (Surface-subsurface flow CW) with 1 to 3 flow shifters (FS) in the middle of the wetland system. Cell 4 and 5 are control CW (CCW), but Cell 5 is the same type as Cell 3. The FS, which converts the route of surface and subsurface flow between two wetlands connected in series, was able to enhance the treatability of TN via nitrification and denitrification and of SS due to filtration and sedimentation. The void fraction and dispersion number of Cell 1, 2 and 3 obtained from the RTD analysis were found to be 0.73 and 0.17, respectively. COD and TP removal efficiencies of Cell 1 to 3 were similar to that of Cell 4 and 5. SS removal efficiencies of Cell 1 to 3 and 5 with FS were 5-10% higher than that of Cell 4 without FS. TN removal efficiencies of Cell 1 to 3 were 3-14% higher than that of Cell 4 and 5. The average $R^2$ values of COD, SS, TN and TP obtained from nonlinear regression analysis were similar to the results of other researchers.

  • Samples from two boreholes of coastal dune field at Jangho-ri coast, Gochang was studied. These were analyzed by grain size analysis geochemical analysis, and the application of OSL dating method to understand the development during the Holocene. The boreholes SB8 and SB9 were classified into three different sedimentary layers by their mean grain size and geochemical characteristics. The results revealed that the upper sand layer is equivalent to the present coastal dune layer, which developed since 1,200 years ago; the silt layer in the middle to the dune slack or lagoon sedimentation layer, which developed between 1,200 and 6,000 years ago; and the sand layer at the bottom to the paleo coastal dune that developed between 6,000 and 7,000 years ago. It was proposed that the forming material of current coastal dune was supplied from the sandy flat in coastal area, while the middle silt layer was supplied from the weathered soil of a bed rock by the comparison with material of surrounding area. In the case of coastal dune, concentrated layer of sands were identified which were buried about 300 and 1,200 years ago, which is identified as the little ice age. This study confirmed the development of Jangho-ri coastal dunes after Holocene Climate Optimum period, and it is likely to assist in the understanding of coastal dunes development.

  • Objective: To investigate serum 25-hydroxyl vitamin D (25(OH)D) and vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP) concentrations in women with endometriosis according to the severity of disease. Methods: Women with mild endometriosis (n = 9) and advanced endometriosis (n = 7), as well as healthy controls (n = 16), were enrolled in this observational study. Serum total 25(OH)D concentrations were analyzed using the Elecsys vitamin D total kit with the Cobas e602 module. Concentrations of bioavailable and free 25(OH)D were calculated. Concentrations of VDBP were measured using the Human Vitamin D BP Quantikine ELISA kit. Variables were tested for normality and homoscedasticity using the Shapiro-Wilk test and Leven F test, respectively. Correlation analysis was used to identify the variables related to total 25(OH)D and VDBP levels. To assess the effects of total 25(OH)D and VDBP levels in the three groups, multivariate generalized additive modeling (GAM) was performed. Results: Gravidity and parity were significantly different across the three groups. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and CA-125 levels increased as a function of endometriosis severity, respectively (p= 0.051, p= 0.004). The correlation analysis showed that total 25(OH)D levels were positively correlated with gravidity (r = 0.59, p< 0.001) and parity (r = 0.51, p< 0.003). Multivariate GAM showed no significant relationship of total 25(OH)D levels with EMT severity after adjusting for gravidity and ESR. However, the coefficient of total 25(OH)D levels with gravidity was significant (1.87; 95% confidence interval, 0.12-3.63; p= 0.040). Conclusion: These results indicate that vitamin D and VDBP levels were not associated with the severity of endometriosis.

  • This study aims to analyze the sedimentary environment change in mid-channel bar of the lower Geum river basin after the construction of the estuary barrage using multi-temporal satellite data and GIS. The sedimentary environment changes were observed in mid-channel bar areas. The mid-channel bar F was found to have been newly formed for 10 years(1996-2006), whereas the mid-channel bar B located between mid-channel bar A and C has disappeared by erosion during the same periods. When examined by section, the areas of the mid-channel bar in the upper stream section from the Yipo's reference point generally increased due to the prevailing sedimentary environments, and those of the downstream section decreased where corrosive environments are dominant. In ternms of the centroid movement, the mid-channel bars grew up toward the downstream by switching erosion and accumulation, as sedimentation was prevailing in the downstream area of mid-channel bars and corrosion was dominant in the upper stream. Through grain size analysis, the study areas are divided into three sections according to the average grain size. In Section I, the mid-channel bars were formed as a result of sedimentary process of tides in the past. In Section II, the mid-channel bars were formed partly through the sedimentary process of rivers although the sedimentary process of tides is prevailing. In Section III, the mid-channel bars were formed mainly through the sedimentary process of rivers, even if it showed the sedimentary process of tides in the past.

  • Numerical analysis was performed to characterize the particle deposition behavior on a horizontal free-standing wafer with thermophoretic effect under the turbulent flow field. A low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. turbulence model was used to analyze the turbulent flow field around the wafer, and the temperature field for the calculation of the thermophoretic effect was predicted from the energy equation introducing the eddy diffusivity concept. The deposition mechanisms considered were convection, diffusion, sedimentation, turbulence and thermophoresis. For both the upper and lower surfaces of the wafer, the averaged particle deposition velocities and their radial distributions were calculated and compared with the laminar flow results and available experimental data. It was shown by the calculated averaged particle deposition velocities on the upper surface of the wafer that the deposition-free zone, where the deposition velocite is lower than 10$^{-5}$ cm/s, exists between 0.096 .mu.m and 1.6 .mu.m through the influence of thermophoresis with positive temperature difference of 10 K between the wafer and the ambient air. As for the calsulated local deposition velocities, for small particle sizes d$_{p}$<0.05 .mu.m, the deposition velocity is higher at the center of the wafer than at the wafer edge, whereas for particle size of d$_{p}$ = 2.0 .mu.m the deposition takes place mainly on the inside area of the wafer. Finally, an approximate model for calculating the deposition velocities was recommended and the calculated deposition velocity results were compared with the present numerical solutions, those of Schmidt et al.'s model and the experimental data of Opiolka et al.. It is shown by the comparison that the results of the recommended model agree better with the numerical solutions and Opiolka et al.'s data than those of Schmidt's simple model.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of pain release through the four weeks aquatic exercise among the female subjects aged above 50 and who suffered from arthritis. Methods : The assessment was validated by blood analysis which measured the fluctuations of Erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR), C-reactive protein(CRP) and Rheumatoid factor(RF). Among the 50 subjects of this experiment, the control group has only taken a regular treatment from the clinic and the other experimental group has done aquatic exercise. The experimental group has practiced the aquatic exercise 50 minutes a day for one month excluding the weekends. Results : Blood analysis revealed that ESR was decreased in both the control group and the experimental group and the major effect of CRP was diminished only in the experimental group. No significance of RF was found in both the control group and the experimental group. Conclusion : These results indicate that the aquatic exercise is an effective treatment for arthritis that is compatible with the similar results from the previous studies. In line with this, the aquatic exercise program can provide an effective treatment and control of the disease with the arthritis patient. Accordingly, the regular basis aquatic exercise proved to be quite satisfactory treatment in this regard and we contend that it is vital for the arthritis patients.

  • A flow and sedimentation field-flow fractionation method has been used to characterize colloidal particles in environmental samples. The opposed flow sample concentration (OFSC) method was employed. The OFSC procedure was optimized for the analysis of particles in ground water with respect to various experimental parameters including sample introduction time, flow rates, etc. The effectiveness in low concentration and characterization of the OFSC-FlFFF was demonstrated with GW-1 and GW-2 ground water samples. Ground water of upto 100 mL has been successfully loaded, concentrated, and characterized by OFSC-FlFFF. The OFSC technique allow the application of FlFFF possible for the separation and characterization of colloidal particles in very low concentrations. The results show FFF provides a simplified alternative to existing off-line concentration procedures, and shows a high potential for the applications to the analysis of dilute colloidal particles in the environmental samples.
