  • Two dimensional steady and unsteady numerical models are applied to bend reaches of the Lower Han River and the superelevation at the Ichon-Banpo bend area of Han River was observed. The flow characteristics in the meandering river are complicated due to the effects of the centrifugal force. The centrifugal force makes the outside water surface level increase and the outside velocity decrease. To study this complex flow studying two dimensional flow is important and useful to design flood control countermeasures, the analysis of sedimentation and the site selection of intake structures. Especially, the superelevation between inside and outside of the bend should be considered to determine the height of embankment. In this study, the water surface elevations in both bank sides of the bend were measured in two reaches during floods in 2007 and 2008. And then the two-dimensional simulation using RMA-2 model was carried out. The upstream and downstream boundary conditions on bend reaches were determined by FLDWAV which is one-dimensional unsteady model. Finally, the observed data are compared with simulation results and the results of the several superelevation formulas, and the flow characteristics of the bend are discussed.

  • An analysis of the current water leak status of understand structure (underground parking lots, staircases, plumbing systems, water reservoirs, etc.) of multi-family housing in South Korea shows that water leaks are found from cracks in all areas of the underground structure caused by the degradation environment (water pressure by underground water, humidity, temperature, earth pressure, soil behaviour and vibration, etc.), which result in various problems, including mold, malodour, debonding of finishing materials, exfoliation, breakout, water leaks in electrical boxes, efflorescence, sedimentation of calcium hydroxide, decoloration, rusting, damages and pollution among others. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the current status of water leaks in underground structure and use the results as the basic data for developing a standard guideline for water leaks and maintenance by parts of the underground structure of multi-family housing.

  • Performance limiting factors (PLFs) derived from 161 drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs), assessed by International Technical Diagnosis & Assistance Center, were analyzed and evaluated in more detail in this study. In order to conduct study, 161 DWTPs were divided into five categories depending on their capacity, and into twelve groups according to processes and facilities. From the results of analysis, PLFs and their distribution ratio derived from each category were significantly different. Filtration was the most important performance limiting process in all DWTPs of five categories, and the PLFs in filtration were backwashing velocity, media configuration, bed depth, and formation of mud-ball. The PLFs in coagulation-flocculation process were found out to be coagulant dosage, mixing speed, mechanical problems, and others in the order of frequency of occurrence. Also, insufficient disinfection ability that is resulted from insufficient hydraulic detention time and improper chlorine dose and injection point, is the most significant among PLFs in a clear well. In the case of sedimentation, inappropriate baffle structure and excessive upward velocity were PLFs. In addition, the results showed that high turbid water and low alkalinity in a rainy season, ferric and manganese ions, and ammonia nitrogen have been contributed significantly on the performance of DWTPs.

  • The main reason for its instability is sediment scouring downstream of hydraulic structures. Both physical and numerical models have been used to investigate the influence of soil properties on scour hole geometry. Nevertheless, no research has been conducted on resistance parameters that affect sedimentation and erosion. In addition, auxiliary structures like wing walls, which are prevalent in many real-world applications, have rarely been studied for their impact on morphology. The hydraulic characteristics of steady flow through a boxed culvert are calibrated using a 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics model compared with experimental data in this study, which shows a good agreement between water depth, velocity, and pressure profiles. Test cases showed that 0.015 m grid cells had the lowest NRMSE and MAE values. It is also possible to quantify sediment scour numerically by testing roughness/d50 ratios (cs) and diversion walls at a meander flume outlet. According to the findings, cs = 2.5 indicates a close agreement between numerical and analytical results of maximum scour depth after the culvert; four types of wing walls influence geometrical deformation of the meander flume outlet, resulting in erosion at the concave bank and deposition at the convex bank; two short headwalls are the most appropriate solution for accounting for small changes in morphology. A numerical model can be used to estimate sediment scour at the meander exit channel of hydraulic structures based on the roughness parameter of soil material and headwall type.

  • Due to the development of Yongsan river estuary weir and Yongam-Kumho sea dike, Mokop coastal area is changed. Especially, Discharged water through Yongsan river estuary weir and Yongam-Kumho sea dike, may cause the environmental influences such as the changes of currents pattern and sedimentation in the vicinity of semi-closed Mokpo harbor. This study deals with the collection and analysis of discharge through estuary weir and sea dike, based on that, we analyzed a characteristics of a sea area from simulation. As the results of this study, it is known that discharge causes the changes of a tidal currents pattern and calculated depth variations showed close relation with tidal circulation.

  • The estimation of seawater intrusion into deep aquifers has been becoming an important subject in terms of site characterization for geological disposal of radioactive waste. Conventional direct-current resistivity methods have been used for ground water explorations and recently have been applied to environmental problems. However, electromagnetic methods are more practical and useful for such a deep investigation. We consider audio-frequency magnetotelluric (AMT) and surface-to-borehole electromagnetic (EM) tomography methods as promising tools for the investigation of deep aquifer. These methods were tested in the Hasunuma area, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Although the study area is in an urban area, high-quality AMT data were acquired, which was mainly accomplished by night-time data recording and remote-reference data processing. One-dimensional inversion results of the AMT data revealed two extremely conductive zones, which is consistent with the electrical conductivity profile of pore water in core samples. It can be interpreted as the seawater intrusions into both zones. However, the chemical analysis of the groundwater sampled in the deep zone suggests that this groundwater must be fossil seawater that had been confined during sedimentation processes. In addition, the permeability coefficient of the deep layer is very low. Thus the deep conductive zone corresponds to the fossil seawater regarded as being difficult to flow.

  • The environmental characteristics in shellfish farms were investigated in the western part of Jinhae Bay, 1996. During summer, anoxia and high nutrient concentrations were found in the bottom waters of shellfish farms. The concentrations of particulate organic species in seawaters were enriched, showing an average 57.44 uM for POC, an average 5.45 uM for PON, and an average 0.42uM for PP. The sediments environment in the farms was very polluted. The concentrations of COD and AVS were more than 20 mg/g.dry and 0.5 mg/g.dry, respectively. The total sedimentation rate was high as an average $7.81g/m^2/day$ with organic matter contents of $26\%$. Oxygen consumption rate was similar to polluted area as an average of $439mg/m^2/day$. Nutrient release rates were an average of $8.25mg/m^2/day$ for nitrogen and an average of $1.38mg/m^2/day$ for phosphorous. The cluster analysis through environmental data in summer indicated that DO, nutrient in the bottom water, and AVS in the sediment were important factors to characterize the polluted environmental site.

  • Oil spilled in seawater undergoes physical and chemical changes as well as biological degradation through various weathering processes, such as evaporation, diffusion, dispersion, emulsification, dissolution, oxidation, and sedimentation. Evaporation is one of the most immediate and prompt weathering processes, and it has the greatest influence on majority of pollutants. In this study, the evaporation characteristics of different oil samples were studied; the volatilization characteristics of gasoline, kerosene, and diesel were compared at average seawater (25 ℃) and near-equator (35 ℃) temperatures. The oil samples were pre-treated and then collected at regular intervals. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis was performed, and the changes in the amount of the hydrocarbons were calculated.

  • Treatment techniques of soft clay layers is needed sophisticated technology in civil engineering. Especially, dredged and reclaimed clay has high liquid limit and water content, so it is difficult to use. Now it comes to the applicability as good construction materials by predicting the behaviors. This paper is to evaluate the characteristics of sedimentation and self-weight consolidation of extremely soft clay, and is to find the way of applying model test result of reconstructing the in-situ condition to design. The consolidation properties of soft clay layers changing the size of the cell are investigated by large-scale consolidation test apparatus and the behaviors of self-weight consolidation are predicted by numerical analysis.

  • To reveal vegetation history and environmental changes in Mt. Jiri, sediment cores were collected from Wangdeungjae moor of Mt. Jiri. Overall dry matter accumulation rates and sedimentation rates by $^{14}C-dating$ were 0.027 $kg{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$ and 0.184 mm/yr since 1250 ($760{\pm}40$ yrs BP, 14 cm in depth). There are three pollen zones; the first zone is below 14 cm depth where Quercus dominated, the second zone is from 14 cm to 6 cm depth where Gramineae increased and Quercus and Salix dominated and the third zone is from 6 cm depth to the top where Pinus and Quercus dominated. Total pollen concentration gradually increased from bottom to the top of sediment core, which implies wet, anaerobic and cool condition during covered period by the core. Calcium and magnesium contents had increased since 14 cm depth, with peaks at 13 and 20 cm depths. This indicates that groundwater had recently become relatively more important than surface water as water source of Wangdeungjae moor Exotic plant or Chenopodiacea pollen was less than 1%. There was little variation in total N and P contents along the length of the core. These results support that Wangdeungjae moor has been little affected by anthropogenic activities. Also, nutrients and heavy metal contents indicate the baseline condition of Wangdeungjae moor.
