  • The experimental results of fatigue crack propagation under constant amplitude loading show that intra-and inter-specimen variability exist. In this paper, a stochastic model for the estimation of mean and variance of crack propagation life is presented To take into account the intra-specimen variability, the material resistance against crack propagation is treated as an 1-dimensional spatial stochastic process, i. e. random field, varying along the propagation path. For the inter-specimen variability, C in paris equation is assumed to be a random variable. Compared with experimental results reported, the present method well estimate the variation in fatigue crack propagation life. And it is confirmed that the thicker the specimen thickness is, the less the variation of propagation life is.

  • AVO analysis was conducted on hydrocarbon-bearing structures by applying the crossplot and offset-coordinate amplitude polynomial techniques. To evaluate the applicability of the AVO analysis, it was conducted on synthetic data that were generated with an anticline model, and field data from the hydrocarbon-bearing Colony Sand bed in Canada. Analysis of synthetic data from the anticline model demonstrates that the crossplot method yields zero-offset reflection amplitude and amplitude variation with negative values for the upper interface of the hydrocarbon-bearing layer. The crossplot values are clustered in the third quadrant. The results of AVO analysis based on the coefficients of the amplitude polynomial are similar to those from the crossplots. These well correlated results of AVO analysis on field and synthetic data suggest that both methods successfully investigate the characteristics of the reflections from the upper interface of a hydrocarbon-bearing layer. Analysis based on the incident-angle equation facilitates the application of various interpretation methods. However, it requires the conversion of seismic data to an incident angle gather. By contrast, analysis using coefficients of the amplitude polynomial is cost-effective because it allows examining amplitude variation with offset without involving the conversion process. However, it warrants further investigation into versatile application. The two different techniques can be complement each other effectively as AVO-analysis tools for the detection of hydrocarbon reservoirs.

  • Being a torque free motion of the rotating Earth, Chandler wobble is the major component in the Earth's polar motion with amplitude about 0.05-0.2 arcsec and period about 430-435 days. Free core nutation, also called nearly diurnal free wobble, exists due to the elliptical core-mantle boundary in the Earth and takes almost the whole part of un-modelled variation of the Earth's pole in the celestial sphere beside precession and nutation. We hereby present a brief summary of their theories and report their recent features acquired from updated datasets (EOP C04 and ECMWF) by using Fourier transform, modelling, and wavelet analysis. Our new findings include (1) period-instability of free core nutation between 420 and 450 days as well as its large amplitude-variation, (2) re-determined Chandler period and its quality factor, (3) fast decrease in Chandler amplitude after 2010.

  • We analyzed evaporation data in the Japanese Ocean Flux Data Sets with Use of Remote Sensing Observations (J-OFURO) Ver.2. There exists huge evaporation in Gulf Stream, Kuroshio Extension, the ocean dessert and the southern part of the Indian Ocean. The temporal variation of evaporation is overwhelmingly large, of which the standard deviation is more than 120(mm), in the Kuroshio Extension region. Also, the result of harmonic analysis gives that this large variation is closely related to annual variation. In addition, the first EOF mode shows long-term variation showing the maximum amplitude between 1992 and 1994 and remarkable decrease after 1994, and large amplitude in the equatorial region and northeast of Australia. The second and third modes were strongly influenced by El Nino. Moreover, we compared J-OFURO2 evaporation product with other products. We used six kinds of data sets (HOAPS3 and GSSTF2 of satellite data, NRA1, NRA2, ERA40 and JRA25 of reanalysis data) for comparison. Most products show underestimation in the most regions, in particular, in the northern North Pacific, mid-latitudes of the eastern South Pacific, and high-latitudes of the South Pacific compared with J-OFUR02. On the other hand, JRA25 and NRA2 show large overestimation in the equatorial regions. RMS difference between NRA2 and J-OFURO2 in the Kuroshio Extension was significantly large, more than 120(mm).

  • The discrimination of flaw shape and sizing is very important subject in the material evaluation for semiconductor and new materials. The aim of this paper is to investigate the spectrum analysis of artificial defect signal captured from steel ball embedded in the resin. The results show that it can be evaluated quantitatively the size of artificial defect, from the amplitude variation of same frequency if the probe with same diameter and focal length is used. Comparing with the amplitude variation of the high frequency component and low frequency component obtained from the distance of defect center position, it can be estimated steel ball and flat bottm defect.

  • Optimal design parameters are estimated from the sensitivity function and performance index variation. Suspension design modification for performance improvement and basic materials for practical applications are presented. The linear quarter model of a vehicle suspension is analyzed in order to represent the utilities of sensitivity analysis, and sensitivity function is determined in the frequency domain. The change of frequency response function is predicted, which depends on the design parameter variation and the property is verified by computer simulation. As an investigation results of sensitivity function for the vibrational amplitude of sprung mass to road profile input, it is shown that the most sensitive parameters are the suspension damping and the suspension stiffness. In order to identify the effects of these two parameters to the performance of suspension system, the performance index variation according to the changes of parameters is considered and then optimal design parameters are determined. It is verified that the system response is improved noticeably in the both of frequency and time domain after the design modification with the optimal parameters.

  • Exhaust system is composed of several parts. Among, them , design of muffler system strongly influences on engine efficiency and noise reduction. So , through comprehension of flow characteristics inside muffler is necessary . In this study , three-dimensional steady and unsteady compressible flow analysis was performed to understand the flow characteristics, pressure loss and amplitude variation of pulsating pressure. The computational grid generation was carried out using commercial preprocessor ICEM CFD/CAE. And the three-dimensional fluid motion inside the muffler was analyzed by STAR-CD, the computational fluid dynamics code. RNG k-$\varepsilon$ tubulence model was applied to consider the complexity of the geometry and fluid motion. The steady and unsteady flow field inside muffler such as velocity distribution, pulsating pressure and pressure loss was examined. In case of unsteady state analysis, velocity of inlet region was converted from measured pulsating pressure. Experimental measurement of pressure and temperature was carried out to provide the boundary and initial condition for computational study under three engine operating conditions. As a result of this study, we could identify the flow characteristics inside the muffler and obtain the pressure loss, amplitude variation of pulsating exhaust gas.

  • Isometric muscle strength has become important as it is realized that a large variation in the human exists and is affected by many personal and environmental factors. Experiments have been performed for estimating the individual capabilities of the quadriceps femoris muscle in man. The surface EMG has been recorded on the belly of the rectus femoris muscle during voluntary isometric continuous exertion at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% MVC. As a muscle force (% MVC) increases, the rectified mean EMG amplitude increases in a non-linear form. The rectified mean EMG amplitude also increases in a non-linear with respect to fatigue progression. As the muscle force (% MVC) increases, an endurance time of isometric exertion decreases linearly. Analysis shows that rectified mean EMG amplitude is a consistent and sensitive measure of motor unit recruitments and can be useful in estimating an individual capability of a local muscle. Further, the result satisfies the sufficient condition that type S motor units are recruited first, while large motor units are recruited progressively as the fatigue develops.

  • In this paper, the theoretical tool displacement and surface roughness are analyzed based on the tool locus of a 2-dimensional tool vibrator. At first, the effects assuming no structural deformation of such variables as frequency, amplitude and phase difference that determine tool loci are simulated. The results show that larger amplitude and/or higher frequency makes better surface. However, a real tool vibrator has the structural deformation, much or less, depending on the excitation frequency. Applying FEM analysis to the deformation of a designed 2D tool vibrator according to the excitation, it has been proved that in this case the displacement is 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ at 1KHz and almost 0 at 20KHz even under the same excitation amplitude.

  • Van der Pol's oscillators is non-conservative oscillator that having nonlinear damping phenomena. The energy of its system is dissipative at a high amplitude whereas its system creates the energy at low amplitude. In order to identify another behaviors in the Van der Pol oscillator, the periodic external force applied in the Van der Pol oscillator. This paper confirms the pattern of variation for the limit cycle according to parameter variation in order to identify another behaviors in the Van der Pol oscillator.
