A coupled-mode approach is used to analyze the interaction of the carrier wave in solid-state materials with the external slow electromagnetic wave. A general condition for an active coupling is derived. Gain characteristics is also examined as a function of operating frequency and thermal-to-drift veocity variations.
Large offshore structure are to be considered for oil storage facilities , marine terminals, power plants, offshore airports, industrial complexes and recreational facilities. Some of them have already been constructed. Some of the envisioned structures will be of the artificial-island type, in which the bulk of structures may act as significant barriers to normal waves and the prediction of the wave intensity will be of importance for design of structure. The present study deals wave scattering problem combining reflection and diffraction of waves due to the shape of the impermeable rigid upright structure, subject to the excitation of a plane simple harmonic wave coming from infinity. In this study, a finite difference technique for the numerical solution is applied to the boundary integral equation obtained for wave potential. The numerical solution is verified with the analytic solution. The model is applied to various structures, such as the detached breakwater (3L${\times}$0.1L), bird-type breakwater(318L${\times}$0.17L), cylinder-type and crescent -type structure (2.89L${\times}$0.6L, 0.8L${\times}$0.26L).The result are presented in wave height amplification factors and wave height diagram. Also, the amplification factors across the structure or 1 or 2 wavelengths away from the structure are compared with each given case. From the numerical simulation for the various boundary types of structure, we could figure out the transformation pattern of waves and predict the waves and predict the wave intensity in the vicinity of large artificial structures.
The effects of wave energy focusing by a submerged berm type of structure is examined. The fundamental idea is based on the phenomenon of refraction by a lens-shaped crescent structure which results in the focusing of wave energy on the center line of the structure. The shape of the submerged structure is a complex curve combining circular with elliptical elements. Based on the design procedure, a special configuration of structure(termed herein as a triple crescent structure) is introduced. Next, some hydraulic model tests are performed to confirm the wave focusing effect in laboratory. In addition, in order to interpret the wave focusing performance behind the structure, a numerical procedure by the hybrid element method is used on the basis of the conventional mild slope equation but modified and extended to allow for steeper bottom slopes and higher curvature. The modified refraction and diffraction provide additional mechanism for wave height amplification and the maximum amplification for triple crescent structure is presented. It also allows for the possibility of wave energy scattering with the change of the incident wave direction. Comparisons with previous theoretical results involving a submerged crescent shape structure are described.
Since design response spectrum does not reflect local soil characteristics, site specific response spectrum of observed ground motions appears relatively higher than design response spectrum at high frequency range. These problems have been pointed out from the domestic seismic design industry. Among various estimation methods, this study used the method H/V ratio of ground motion for estimating site amplification. This method has been extended to background noise, Coda waves and S waves recently for estimating site amplification. This study applied this method to the background noise and Coda wave energy. This study analysed more than 267 background noises from 15 macro earthquakes including main Fukuoka earthquake (2005/03/20, M=6.5) and then compared to results from S waves, at 8 main domestic seismic stations. The results showed that most of the domestic seismic stations gave similar results to those from S waves. Each station showed its own characteristics of site amplification property in low, high and specific resonance frequency ranges. Comparison of this study to other studies using different method can give us much information about dynamic amplification of domestic sites characteristics and site classification.
Analytical investigation of acoustic wave scattering from turbulent premixed flames was conducted to evaluate the acoustic energy amplification/damping. Such acoustic energy change is attributed to the acoustic velocity jump due to flame's heat release. Small perturbation method up to second order and stochastic analysis were utilized to formulate net acoustic energy and the energy transfer from coherent to incoherent energy. Randomly wrinkled flame surface is responsible for the energy transfer from coherent to incoherent field. Nondimensional parameters that govern net acoustic energy were determined: rms height and correlation length of flame front, incident wave frequency, incidence angle, and temperature ratio. The dependence of net acoustic energy upon these parameters is illustrated by numerical simulations in case of Gaussian statistics of flame front. Total net energy was amplified and the major factors that affect such energy amplification are incidence angle and temperature ratio. Coherent (incoherent) energy is damped (amplified) with rms height and correlation length of flame front.

Shock-wave focusing from a two-dimensional parabolic reflector was simulated using an explicit finite volume upwind TVD scheme. Computations were performed for three different incident shock speeds of $M_s$ = 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3, corresponding to the relatively weak, intermediate, and strong shock waves, respectively. Numerical solutions nicely resolved all the waves evolving through the focusing process. As the incident shock strength increase, a transition was observed in the shock-fronts geometry that was caused by the change in the reflection type of converging shock fronts on the axis of symmetry, from regular-type to Mach-type reflection. The computed maximum on-axis pressure amplification and the trajectories of three-wave intersections showed good agreement with experimental results. The strong nonlinear effect near the focal region which determines the shock-fronts geometries at and behind the focus and at the same time confines the pressure amplification at the focus was clearly revealed from the present numerical simulation.
We obtain a solution of optical parametric amplification using self-phase modulation within the Kerr media in a nonlinear interferometer with two arms. We show that it is equivalent to the solution driven by four-wave mixing and that the solution of parametric amplification is suitable to generate a parametric gain. We obtain a derivative of power gain with respect to the propagation distance and show that gain-saturation can occur as the beam propagates along the nonlinear arms. We also show a bandwidth characteristic of the parametric amplification driven by nondegenerate four-wave mixing. Numerical examples are given to illustrate that the solution of the parametric amplification can be applied to design and analysis of all-optical devices such as all-optical amplifiers.
The novel voltammetry using a semi-circular potential wave for quasi-reversible charge transfer system on electrode is theoretically investigated. Compared with conventional voltammetry based on linear sweep such as linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), semi-circular potential sweep voltammetry (SCV) may decrease the charging current outside the center of potential range and increase the faradaic current at the midpoint due to variable scan rate. In this paper, we investigate the system based on macroelectrode where simple 1 dimensional (1 D) diffusion system is valid with various charge transfer rate constant (k0). In order to observe the amplification at midpoint, voltammetric response with different midpoint ranging from -200 mV to 200 mV are studied. SCVs shows both the shift of peak potential and the amplification of peak current for quasi-reversible electrode reaction while only higher peak current is observed for reversible reaction. Moreover, the higher current at midpoint enable the amplification of current at low overpotential region which may assist the determination of onset potential as a figure-of-merit in electrocatalyst.
In this study, the characteristics of site amplification at seismic observation stations in Japan were estimated using the attenuation relationship of each station's response spectrum. Ground motion records observed after 32 earthquakes were employed to construct the attenuation relationship. The station correction factor at each KiK-net station was compared to the transfer functions between the base rock and the surface. For each station, the plot of the station correction factor versus the period was similar in shape to the graphs of the transfer function (amplitude ratio versus period). Therefore, the station correction factors are effective for evaluating site amplifications considering the period of ground shaking. In addition, the station correction factors were evaluated with respect to the average shear wave velocities using a geographic information system (GIS) dataset. Lastly, the site amplifications for specific periods were estimated throughout Japan.

Based on a weakly non-Gaussian theory the occurrence probability of freak waves is formulated in terms of the number of waves in a time series and the surface elevation kurtosis. Finite kurtosis gives rise to a significant enhancement of freak wave generation in comparison with the linear narrow banded wave theory. For fixed number of waves, the estimated amplification ratio of freak wave occurrence due to the deviation from the Gaussian theory is 50% - 300%. The results of the theory are compared with laboratory and field data.
