  • The compositional changes of wormwood (Artemisia princeps var. orientalis) essential oils were studied under 4 different storage conditions i.e., being exposed to air at 20 and $40^{\circ}C$. Sixty-four volatile compounds consisting of 24 terpene hydrocarbons, 18 alcohols, 11 ketones, 6 esters, 1 aldehyde, 2 hydrocarbons, and 2 oxides were identified on the basis of their mass spectra characteristics and retention indices in original wormwood essential oils. Identified compounds constituted 80.53% of the total peak area. Borneol (12.13%) was the most abundant compound, followed by $\alpha$-thujone (8.66%), T-cadinol (6.67%), and 1,8-cineole (6.21%) in original wormwood essential oils. Under the condition of $40^{\circ}C$ of temperature with the cap being opened for 3 min everyday respectively during 6 months of storage, the total amount of functional groups in essential oil determined by peak area percent were decreased by 79.45%, at most. The total level of monoterpene hydrocarbons decreased markedly in the aerobic condition and high temperatures. Whereas the total level of esters increased significantly. Wormwood essential oils were stored in experimental conditions, with the changes in the volatile compounds of essential oils being accelerated by high temperatures and contact with the atmosphere.

  • This paper considers analysis of the lubrication between the piston ring and the cylinder liner. Piston ring lubrication analysis considering oil transport is important because oil consumption is an essential factor to design the piston assembly. To develop the lubrication analysis program for the piston ring, oil continuity condition and open-end boundary assumption are used for computational boundaries. Results show that oil continuity can be almost satisfied at any crank angle in and out of the piston ring clearance. Therefore the amount of oil consumption and the dynamic behavior of ring pack can be estimated using this algorithm. And it can be known that the effective width may be smaller than the full width of the piston ring, so oil starvation condition should be considered for the lubrication analysis of the piston ring.

  • According to the regulation of IMO, oil discharge from ships is allowed under 15ppm only and an oil filtering equipment is essential. However, for large ships using heavy fuel oil of over S.G 0.98 and viscosity 380cSt and system oil, it has been in difficulty to process with existing filtering type of oily water separator. A parallel plate type oily water separator which is one of gravity type separators can be used as an assistant equipment for the oil filtering system to meet the present IMO standard of 15 ppm, because it is an efficient method in dealing with a large amount of rich oil with high specific gravity. This work is focused on the fundamental investigation of the performance of the plate type oily water separator by visualization method and PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) measurement to acquire multi-point velocity data simultaneously. The experimental results showed that the space of the plates acts a significant role in separating process and it was found that an important point to minimize a vortex flow is to flow a large amount of fluid in space of the plates in order to promote the efficiency of separation.

  • To investigate the production of monoterpenoids by Mentha pipperita cells in suspension culture, effects of media formulation, plant growth hormones, initial pH of the media, and cold stress on the production of essential oil and menthol were analyzed. Among the media employed, Lin-Staba medium resulted in the best essential oil production. Addition of 100 mg/l of yeast extract to the Lin-Staba medium induced the cells to produce large amount of essential oil and high content of menthol (0.39 g/l and 19.6%, respectively). In the effect of plant growth hormone, auxine were more effective than cytokinins. At initial pH of 4.7, oil production was good but menthol content was low. However at pH 5.7 the trend was reversed. When the culture temperature was lowered from $27^{\circ}$ to $10^{\circ}$ during 6 hour-dark period, growth was not changed much but essential oil production and menthol content was increased and reached to 528 mg/l and 21%, respectively.

  • This study was performed to investigate the influence of curing conditions on the composition of essential oil during curing process of burley tobacco leaves. The curing conditions were the primed curing in vinyl house (house-curing), air-curing barn (air-curing) and stalk-curing in conventional curing house (stalk-curing). Total 90 compounds are identified from the steam volatile oils of harvest and cured tobacco leaves by GC and GC-MS, respectively. The major components were neophytadiene, hexadecanoic acid, 3,8,13-duvatriene-1,5-diols, oxide-9-methylene-3,13-duvadienols, solanone, megastigma-4,6,8-trien-3-ones, phenylacetaldehyde, $\beta$-phenylethyl alcohol, indole, dihydroactinidiolide and phytol. The amount of alcoholic compounds was decreased more than approximately 50% in cured leaves without regard to the curing conditions. $\beta$-Phenylethyl alcohol and 3,8,13-duvatriene-1,5-diols were decreased more in air curing and stalk curing than in house curing. The amounts of phenylacetaldehyde, solanone, $\beta$-damascone, $\beta$ -damascenone, oxysolanone and megastigma-4,6,8-trien-3-ones as ketonic compounds, dihydroactinidiolide and indole as miscellaneous compounds in air-cured and stalk-cured tobacco leaves were 2 times higher than those in house-cured leaves, while esteric and acidic compounds were not changed largely in content by curing conditions.

  • Caryopteris incana (Verbenaceae) has been used to treat cough, arthritis, and eczema in Oriental medicine. The two fractions ($CHCl_3-$ and BuOH fractions) and the essential oil of the plant material were subjected to the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) assay. The $IC_{50}$ of the $CHCl_3$ fraction and the essential oil on LPS-induced macrophage RAW 264.7 cells were $16.4{\mu}g/mL$ and $23.08{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. On gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectroscopy (MS) analysis, twenty-five components representing 85.5% amount of total essential oil were identified. On the chromatogram, three main substances, trans-pinocarveol, cis-citral, and pinocarvone, occupied 18.8%, 13.5% and 18.37% of total peak area. Furthermore, by HPLC-UV analysis, six compounds including one iridoid (8-O-acetylharpagide)- and five phenylethanoid glycosides (caryopteroside, acteoside, phlinoside A, 6-O-caffeoylphlinoside, and leucosceptoside A) isolated from the BuOH fraction were quantified. The content of six compounds were shown as the following order: caryopteroside (162.35 mg/g) > 8-O-acetylharpagide (93.28 mg/g) > 6-O-caffeoylphlinoside (28.15 mg/g) > phlinoside (22.60 mg/g) > leucosceptoside A (16.87 mg) > acteoside (7.05 mg/g).

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare changes of salivary flow rate, salivary buffering capacity, and S. mutans after using a mouthwash containing essential oil or probiotics widely used as oral lactic acid bacteria in the oral environment. Methods : Fifty-three healthy adults aged 20 years or older voluntarily participated in this study after they were informed of the purpose of this study. Subjects were divided into a group treated with probiotics (L. reuteri) and a group treated with mouthwash containing essential oil. To evaluate changes in the oral environment, salivary flow rate, salivary buffering capacity, and S. mutans test were performed at baseline and 4 weeks later. Unstimulated and stimulated salivary flow samples were collected for 5 minutes and results were recorded in ml per minute. Salivary buffering capacity was divided into scores of 1 (low), 2 (moderate) and 3 (high) according to the color of the strip. The amount of S. mutans was classified as scores of 0, 1, 2, and 3 according to the decision table. Data collected in this study were analyzed at the 95 % significance level using the SPSS Version 23.0 program. Results : Both the unstimulated salivary flow rate and the stimulated salivary flow rate increased statistically after the intervention compared to those before intervention in the probiotics group. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the probiotics group and the mouthwash group. Salivary buffering capacity and S. mutans results showed no statistically significant differences between the probiotics group and the mouthwash group either. The salivary buffering capacity and the salivary flow rate showed a positive correlation. Conclusion : To improve the oral environment, such as salivary flow rate and salivary buffering capacity, an optimal product can be selected in consideration of individual preference and cost-effectiveness.

  • Essential fatty acids (EFA) are fatty acids that must be obtained from the diet because they can not be biosynthesized by human or animals. Gamma fatty acids contain gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, 18:3n-6) and dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DHGLA, 20:3n-6) as intermediate metabolites of linoleic acid (LA, 18:2n-6), which is an EFA found in vegetable oils. GLA is an important essential fatty acid that is required by human and animals to function normally. Recently, studies have indicated that GLA may be an essential component of the cell membrane, as well as an active component of dietary supplements and medicine. GLA must beadministered through the diet because it is converted into DHGLA in the body quickly and completely. DHGLA is a key material involved in the metabolism of LA. GLA is biosysthesized by the rate limiting step of ${\Deltac}^6$-desaturase, which is an enzyme that desaturates LA, there by allowing it to be converted into DHGLA via chain elongation. In addition, DHGLA exerts bioactive effects via action as a precursor of eicosanoid series 1. Breast milk contains an abundant amount of GLA; however, GLA is also available directly in evening primrose oil, black currant seed oil, borage oil and hemp seed oil. In addition, GLA enriched animal and plant can be produced using biotechnology, and highly pure GLA can be extracted using supercritical fluids, such as supercritical carbon dioxide, which will allow economically feasible production of GLA for use in medicines.

  • Oil seals are most essential parts in mechanical lubrication system to maintain the close gaps between stationary and high rotating components, and to help prevent oil leakages. Oil seals also can prevent harmful contaminants entering from outside to machinery, especially in severe environments. Therefore, the oil seals have an important performance in the machinery components. The performance of the oil seals are influenced by the design variables such as amount of interference gap between the main lip and shaft, the angle of main lip at air and oil sides and the distance between the garter spring and main lip. In the present study, a finite element analysis was performed to evaluate the oil seal performance with the considerations of number of oil seal dust lips and angle of the lip at oil side with the different design variables. As a result from the FEM analysis, the stress and contact pressure distributions was derived, based on this, performance of the sealing and durability were determined.
