We reported on characteristics of the fluorescent OLED fabricated on commercial ITO/glass and BCS grown IZO/glass substrate, respectively. The amorphous IZO anode film grown by box cathode sputtering(BCS) exhibited similar electrical and optical characteristics to commercial ITO anode even though it was deposited at room temperature. In addition, the amorphous IZO anode showed higher workfunction (5.2 eV) than that of the commercial ITO anode (5.0 eV) after ozone treatment for 10 min. Furthermore, fluorescent OLED fabricated on amorphous IZO anode film showed improved current-voltage-luminance characteristics, external quantum efficiency and power efficiency en contrast with fluorescent OLED fabricated on commercial ITO anode film. It was thought that smooth surface and high workfunction of amorphous IZO anode lead to more efficient hole injection by reduction of interface barrier height between anode and organic layers.
We report on the fabrication of organic-based flexible displays using an amorphous IZO anode grown at room temperature. The IZO anode films were grown by a conventional DC reactive sputtering on the polycarbonate (PC) substrate at room temperature using a synthesized IZO target in a $Ar/O_2$ ambient. Both x-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution electron microscope (HREM) examination results show that the IZO anode film grown at room temperature Is complete amorphous structure due to low substrate temperature. A sheet resistance of $35.6\Omega/\Box$, average transmittance above 90 % in visible range, and root mean spare roughness of $6\sim10.5\AA$ were obtained even in the IZO anode film grown on PC substrate at room temperature. It is shown that the $Ir(ppy)_3$ doped flexible organic light emitting diode (OLED) fabricated on the IZO anode exhibit comparable current-voltage-luminance characteristics as well as external quantum efficiency and power efficiency to OLED fabricated on conventional ITO/Glass substrate. These findings indicate that the IZO anode film grown on PC substrate is a promising anode materials for the fabrication of organic based flexible displays.
Electrical, optical, surface, and structural properties of amorphous indium-zinc-oxide (a-IZO) grown by box cathode sputtering (BCS) were compared with crystalline indium-tin-oxide (c-ITO) anode films grown by conventional DC sputtering (DCS). Although x-ray diffraction plot of BCS-grown IZO film shows amorphous structure, the optical and electrical properties of a-IZO is comparable to those of c-ITO film. In particular, BCS-grown IZO films shows very smooth surface without defects such as pin hole and cracks because most of the energy of the sputtered atoms was confined in high density plasma region in box cathode gun. Furthermore polymer organic light emitting diodes (POLED) with the a-IZO anode film shows better electrical properties than that of POLED with the c-ITO anode film due to high work function and smooth surface of a-IZO. This suggested that BCS-grown a-IZO film is promising anode materials substituting conventional c-ITO anode in OLED and flexible displays.
We report on the fabrication of organic-based flexible display using an amorphous IZO anode grown at room temperature. The IZO anode films were grown by a conventional DC reactive sputtering on polycarbonate (PC) substrate at room temperature using a synthesized IZO target in a Ar/$O_2$ ambient. X-ray diffraction examination results show that the IZO anode film grown at room temperature is complete amorphous structure due to low substrate temperature. It is shown that the $Ir(ppy)_3$ doped flexible organic light emitting diode (OLED) fabricated on the IZO anode exhibit comparable current-voltage-luminance characteristics to OLED fabricated on conventional ITO/glass substrate. These findings indicate that the IZO anode film grown on PC substrate is a promising anode materials for the fabrication of organic based flexible displays.
We report on the rapid thermal annealing effect on the electrical, optical, and structural properties of IZO transparent conducting oxide films grown by box cathode sputtering (BCS). To investigate structural properties of rapid thermal annealed IZO films in $N_2$ atmosphere as a function of annealing temperature, syncrotron x-ray scattering experiment was carried out. It was shown that the amorphous structure of the IZO films was maintained until $400^{\circ}C$ because ZnO and $In_2O_3$ are immiscible and must undergo phase separation to allow crystallization. In addition, the IZO films grown at different Ar/$O_2$ ratio of 30/1.5 and 30/0 showed different preferred (222) and (440) orientation, respectively, with increase of rapid thermal annealing temperature. The electrical properties of the OLED with rapid thermal annealed IZO anode was degraded as rapid thermal annealing temperature of IZO increased. This indicates the amorphous IZO anode is more beneficial to make high-quality OLEDs.
In this study, we have investigated the effect of the substrate temperature on the structural and the electrical characteristics of IZO thin films for the OLED (organic light emitting diodes) devices. For this purpose, IZO thin films were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering under various substrate temperature. The substrate temperature has been changed from room temperature to $400^{\circ}C$. Samples which were deposited under $250^{\circ}C$ show amorphous structure. The electrical resistivity of crystalline-IZO (c-IZO) film was higher than that of amorphous-IZO (a-IZO) film. And the electrical resistivity showed minimum value near $150^{\circ}C$ of deposition temperature. The OLED device was fabricated with different IZO substrates made by configuration of IZO/$\acute{a}$-NPD/DPVB/$Alq_3$/LiF/Al to elucidate the performance of IZO substrate. OLED devices with the amorphous-IZO (a-IZO) anode film show better current density-voltage-luminance characteristics than that of OLED devices with the commercial crystalline-ITO (c-ITO) anode film. It can be explained that very flat surface roughness and high work function of a-IZO anode film lead to more efficient hole injection by reduction of interface barrier height between anode and organic layers. This suggests that a-IZO film is a promising anode materials substituting conventional c-ITO anode in OLED devices.
In this study, we have investigated the structural and electrical characteristics of IZO thin films deposited under hydrogen atmosphere on flexible substrate for the OLED (organic light emitting diodes) devices. For this purpose, PES was used for flexible substrate and IZO thin films were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering under hydrogen ambient gases (Ar, $Ar+H^2$) at room temperature. In order to investigate the influences of the hydrogen, the flow rate of hydrogen in argon mixing gas has been changed from 0.1sccm to 0.5sccm. All the samples show amorphous structure regardless of flow rate. The electrical resistivity of IZO films increased with increasing flow rate of $H^2$ under $Ar+H^2$. All the films showed the average transmittance over 85% in the visible range. The OLED device was fabricated with different IZO electrodes made by configuration of IZO/$\acute{a}$-NPD/DPVB/$Alq_3$/LiF/Al to elucidate the performance of IZO substrate. OLED devices with the amorphous-IZO (a-IZO) anode film show good current density-voltage-luminance characteristics. This suggests that flat surface roughness and low electrical resistivity of a-IZO anode film lead to more efficient anode material in OLED devices.
Electrical, optical, and structural properties of indium zinc oxide (IZO) anode films grown by a RF magnetron sputtering were investigated as functions of RF power and working pressure in pure Ar ambient. To investigate electrical, optical and structural properties of IZO anode films, 4-point probe and UV/VIS spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were performed, respectively. A sheet resistance of $15.2{\Omega}/{\square}$, average transmittance above 80 % in visible range, expecially above 85 % in 550 nm, and root mean square roughness of 1.13 nm were obtained from optimized IZO anode films grown in oxygen free ambient. All samples show amorphous structure regardless of RF power and working pressure due to low substrate temperature. In addition, XPS depth profile obtained from IZO/PES exhibits that there is no obvious evidence of interfacial reaction between IZO and PES substrate. Furthermore, current-voltage-luminance of the flexible phosphorescent flexible OLEDs fabricated on IZO anode shows dependence on sheet resistance of the IZO anode. These results indicate that the IZO anode is a promising candidate to substitute conventional ITO anode for high-quality flexible displays.
The impurity doped ZnO has been extensively studied because of its optoelectric properties. GIZO (Ga-In-Zn-O) amorphous oxide semiconductors has been widely used as transparent flexible semiconductor material. Recently, various amorphous transparent semiconductors such as IZO (In-Zn-O), GIZO, and HIZO (Hf-In-Zn-O) were developed. In this work, we examined the local structures of IZO, GIZO, and HIZO. The local coordination structure was investigated by the extended X-ray absorption fine structure. The IZO, GIZO and HIZO thin films ware deposited on the glass substrate with thickness of 400nm by the radio frequency sputtering method. The targets were prepared by the mixture of $In_2O_3$, ZnO and $HfO_2$ powders. The percent ratio of In:Zn in IZO, Ga:In:Zn in GIZO and Hf:In:Zn in HIZO was 45:55, 33:33:33 and 10:35:55, respectively. In this work, we found that IZO, GIZO and HIZO are all amorphous and have a similar local structure. Also, we obtained the bond distances of $d_{Ga-O}=1.85\;{\AA}$, $d_{Zn-O}=1.98\;{\AA}$, $d_{Hf-O}=2.08\;{\AA}$, $d_{In-O}=2.13\;{\AA}$.
