Anode electrode in a microbial fuel cell (MFC) should transfer the receiving electron as well as provide large surface area that can be immobilized microorganisms. Microorganisms' population is one of important factors to improve the current generation and to treat the livestock wastewater by biological treatment. These studies were attempted to investigate if stainless-steel wire skein (SSWS) could be used as anode electrode replacement a graphite felt electrode in microbial fuel cell. For these studies, pretreated livestock wastewater was used diluted to 500 mg/L as COD before use. At this time, the current showed a little difference of about 5% when using each of a SSW and graphite felt (control). There was no significant difference in the current value. The organic removal rate in the microbial fuel cells used graphite felt and SSWS was 82.4% and 88.3%, respectively. The COD removal in the MFC used the SSWS was higher than that of graphite felt. Ammonium nitrogen was showed similar trend in two case all. These results about current generation and organic matter reduction seem possible that SSWS was used to anode electrode. When SSWS is used, the initial investment for system construction is expected to be able to reduce by approximately 1/50.

The purpose of this study was to determine optimum value of aeration, acetate dosage, and $CO_2$ input for the cultivation of Scenedesmus acuminatus. Highest specific growth rate and maximum biomass productivity was obtained by the aeration of 0.72 vvm and lower specific growth rates and maximum biomass productivity were obtained for other aeration tests. When putting 0.3 M of ammonium acetate in JM medium, the highest specific growth rate and maximum biomass productivity were obtained. $CO_2$ input tests were performed during semi-continuous culturing tests. The highest specific growth rate ($0.460d^{-1}$) and maximum biomass productivity ($0.936gL^{-1}d^{-1}$) were obtained after replacing 50% of solution with 0.3 M of acetate solution for $CO_2$ input tests. However, more dilutions after the first dilution resulted in lower specific growth rate and maximum biomass productivity. In aeration tests, the highest specific growth rate ($0.381d^{-1}$) and maximum biomass productivity ($0.253gL^{-1}d^{-1}$) were obtained when cultivating it with JM medium, but the specific growth rate and maximum biomass producitivty were significantly decreased when 50% of solution was replaced by acetate containing solution.
This experiment was carried out to find the growth response and changes of nitrate and soluble sugar content in tomato leaves with salt stress. Tomato (Solanum lycopericum) seedlings were grown under different electrical conductivity (EC) levels adjusted with $CaCl_2$ as 1, 2, and $6dS\;m^{-1}$. The growth response and contents of nitrate and soluble sugar in tomato plants were examined at 7 and 14 days after salt treatment. Leaf area and dry weight ratio of shoot to root of tomato plants were decreased as EC level increased. Photosynthetic rate of leaves was reduced under high EC level due to the stomatal closure and the reduction of transpiration rate. The soluble sugar and starch content were lower in the tomato leaves grown under high EC level. Total nitrogen and nitrate contents were decreased in high EC level, whereas the ammonium content was increased. High-salt stress induced the accumulation of salt crystal in mesophyll cells of tomato leaf.
Urea in blood has been measured as an effective marker for diagnosis of renal function. Urea which is e end-product of nitrogen containing metabolites such as proteins is filtered through glomeruli of kidneys and then excreted as urine. If the renal function is deteriorated, the urea concentration in blood will be increased, from which the healthiness of renal function is judged. In order to improve the confidence of diagnosis results, the results must keep traceability chain to certified reference materials, which was certified by primary reference method. In this study, we proposed isotope dilution-liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (ID-LC/MS) as a candidate primary method, in which $15^N_2$-urea is used as an internal reference material. The developed method is highly accurate in principle and is convenient as it does not require cumbersome derivatization. 0.1 mmol/L ammonium chloride was selected as a mobile phase for HPLC because it provided low interference in MS analysis of relatively low molecular weighted urea. HPLC and MS were connected with an electrospray ionization (ESI) interface of positive mode, which provided high sensitivity and reproducibility. The developed method was validated with internationally recognized reference materials, and we have obtained satisfactory results in an international ring trial. The expanded uncertainty calculated according to ISO guide was 1.8% at 95% confidence interval. The developed method is being used as a primary reference measurement method such as for certification of serum certified reference materials (CRMs).

In order to know the electrochemical decomposition characteristics of ammonia to nitrogen, this work has studied several experimental variables on the electrolytic ammonia decomposition. The effects of pH and chloride ion at $IrO_2$, $RuO_2$, and Pt anodes on the electrolytic decomposition of ammonia were compared, and the existence of membrane equipped in the cell and the changes of the current density, the initial ammonia concentration and so on were investigated on the decomposition. The performances of the electrode were totally in order of $RuO_2{\approx}IrO_2>Pt$ in the both of acid and alkali conditions, and the ammonia decomposition was the highest at a current density of $80mA/cm^2$, over which it decreased, because the adsorption of ammonia on the electrode surface was hindered due to the evolution of oxygen. The ammonia decomposition increased with the concentration of chloride ion in the solution. However, the increase became much dull over 10 g/l of chloride ion. The $RuO_2$ electrode among the tested electrodes generated the most OH radicals which could oxidized the ammonium ion at pH 7.

Superconducting fiber of high Tc $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\sigma}}$ was successfully prepared by the sol-gel method. The stoichiometric mixture of Y, Ba and Cu nitrates was dissolved in water, to which citric acid solution was added. Then ammonium hydroxide was added to the mixture in order to increase the pH to a value between 5.8 and 6.2. The mixture was heated carefully to form a homogeneous colloid sol at 358 K. The solution was viscous enough to draw a long gel fiber, which was then heated at 1223K for 8 hrs. under oxygen partial pressure of $Po_2$ = 1 atm., cooled slowly and annealed at 723K for 13 hrs.. The reacted superconducting sample maintained a fiber form with some shrinkage of its volume. The superconducting transition temperatures (Tc, onset and Tc, offset) of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\sigma}}$ have been determined to be approximately 95K and 82K, respectively. The superconducting phase was also confirmed by Meissner effect at liquid nitrogen boiling temperature.
Asparagine biosynthesis by soybean sprouts grown under the dark conditions has been demonstrated. The amount of free asparagine synthesized in ten day-old soybean sprouts increases to 22.7% on the dry weight base. The effects of nitrogen compounds such as $NH_4Cl,\;(NH_4)_2SO_4$ and urea on asparagine synthesis during the sprouting were examined and the results showed that urea was more effective than other two compounds. Glutamine-dependent asparagine synthetase was partially purified (8.6 folds) through ammonium sulfate fractionation, followed by Sephadex G-150 gel filtration. The enzyme was very labile and required protection by thiol groups or high level of glycerol. The mixture of ATP and $Mg^{++}$ ion also stabilized the enzyme activity. The enzyme utilized glutamine more effectively than ${NH_4}^+$ as an amide donor for the formation of asparagine. The enzyme required L-aspartate (Km=3.1 mM), L-glutamine, ATP and $Mg^{++}$. It showed pH optimum of 7.5 and catalyzed the formation of ${\beta}-aspartyl$ hydroxamate in the presence of L-aspartate, ATP, $Mg^{++}$ and $NH_2OH$ in the reaction mixture.

Field test on PGPRM was on going. Varictus methods formality improvement through cultivation were developed. Management research of ginseng production was rare Extension was active throuch official and private organizations and through workshop for the extension specialists, and direct lectures to grower's. Extension services made the researcher to understand the existing problems at grower's fields. Research environment for ginseng production was in prime time only for three years when Korea Ginseng Research Institute was established then gradually aggravated.

Garbage composting was studied in a controlled batch reactor with the addition of cooked rice as a biodegradable carbon source to find the effect of C/N ratio control on composting. And composting of bulking agents such as sawdust and wheat straw were tested with the addition of ammonium sulfate as a nitrogen source. As expected, biodegradation of the garbage having low C/N ratio was improved to some extent when foreign carbon was added. But bulking agents used in this study exerted slightly biodegradable carbon potential, indicating that the estimation of the dose of additional carbon considering desirable C/N ratio was not reasonable when lignocellulosic bulking material was added to garbage. It was found that the optimum moisture content increased with sawdust addition meaning the C/N ratio increment. Considering the above results, it was suggested that 78g sawdust per 100g garbage should be mixed to make C/N ratio to 25 and moisture content to 56% for effective composting of the garbage studied in this paper.

This study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of anaerobic pretreatment for the leachate solubilized from thermal hydrolysis of sewage sludge cake. Overall process for the treatment of sludge cake consists of thermal hydrolysis, crystallization of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate (MAP) for the leachate and anaerobic digestion of supernatant from MAP crystallization. The experimental evidence showed that the optimum ratio of Mg : P for the struvite crystallization of leachate solubilized from thermal hydrolysis of sludge cake was 1.5 to 1.0 as weight basis at the pH of 9.5. With this operational condition, the removal efficiencies of ammonia nitrogen and phosphorous achieved 50% and 97%, respectively. The mesophilic batch test showed that the ultimate biodegradability of the supernatant from MAP crystallization reached 63% at S/I ratio of 0.5. The readily biodegradable fraction of 90% ($S_1$) of the MAP supernatant BVS (Biodegradable Volatile Solids, $S_0$) degraded with $k_1$ of $0.207day^{-1}$ for the initial 17 days where as the rest slowly biodegradable fraction ($S_2$) of 10% of BVS degraded with $k_2$ of $0.02day^{-1}$ for the rest of the operational period. Semi-Continuously Fed and Mixed Reactor (SCFMR) was chosen as one of the best candidates to treat the MAP supernatant because of its total solids content over 6%. Maximum average biogas production rates reached 0.45 v/v-d and TVS removal efficiency of 37~41% was achieved at an hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 20 days and its corresponding organic loading rate (OLR) of 1.43 g VS/L-d.
