  • This research was conducted to examine the effect of bonding on the bending and shear strength of COMPLY-board when used with meranti face veneer and fire retardant treated particle-board core. For ammonium sulfate, modulus of rupture (MOR) of COMPLY-board increased with increasing chemical concentration up to 10 percent and then decreased after that concentration. However, Minalith showed reverse effect to the result for ammonium sulfate. Modulus of elasticity (MOE) of COMPLY-hoard decreased with increasing chemical concentration and its differences were not significant between concentration. Shear strength was shown better when treated with ammonium sulfate than with Minalith. Wood failure of COMPLY increased with increasing chemical concentration up to 15 percent and then decreased after that concentration. The products of parallel and cross veneer laminated were better than those of COMPLY composed of fire retardant treated particle-board core. Non-treated particle-board was the least in strength. MOE of fire retardant treated COMPLY increased by 136 percent and its MOE by 170 percent as compared with non treated particle-board.

  • 1) In order to obtain a microbial strain having a strong yeast cell wall lytic activity, about 156 isolates capable of forming clear zones on baker's yeast-peptone-bouillon agar plate were obtained from soil, mud and water samples and a strain K-42 with the highest lytic activity was identified as Bacillus circulans. 2) Effect of carbon sources on the lytic enzyme production by the K-42 strain was in the decreasing order of maltose>glucan>xylose>control in 2-day culture and of lactose>galactose>glucan>control in 3-day culture. Effect of inorganic nitrogen sources was in the decreasing order of ammonium acetate>sodium nitrate>control in 2-day culture and of ammonium chloride>ammonium oxalate>control in 3-day culture, whereas organic nitrogen sources except milk casein showed an increase in 2-day culture and a decrease in 3-day culture. Synergistic effect of carbon sources and nitrogen sources was not observed. 3) The enzyme production by the K-42 strain was greatly affected by pH change of the culture medium, thus a high lytic activity could be maintained by keeping the pH range of $7{\sim}8$ and adding carbon or nitrogen sources. 4) Optimum conditions for the lytic activity of the K-42 strain were obtained at $pH\;7{\sim}8$ and $60^{\circ}C$ and the extent of hydrolysis toward heated yeast cell wall was 65%.

  • The mycelial morphology during submerged cultivation of Ganoderma ludium using by air-lift fermenter system were analyzed by image processing system and the characterization of mycelial morphology were investigated. In submerged culture using medium with different ammonium phosphate concentrations, the various morphological forms of G. lucidum mycelium were observed. The filamentous forms such as non-branched long filamentous mycelium, non-branched short mycelium, branched long filamentous mycelium, branched short mycelium, entangled mycelium and clump were observed, and also, and also, the pelleted forms such as smooth pellet, rough pellet and hollow rough pellet were observed. The mycelial morphology was changed from the filamentous to the pelleted forms by addition of ammonium phosphate. The fractal dimensions of pelleted and filamentous forms were 1.05 and 1.3, respectively, while the fractal dimension of mixtures of pelleted and filamentous forms was 1.16. Therefore, the fractal dimension was found to be more effective index for the detection of the mycelial morphology and morphological change during batch cultivation. The circularity was also found to be useful for evaluating the surface growth of pelleted mycelium.

  • The present study aimed to investigate the diurnal variations in air concentrations and exchange fluxes of ammoniacal nitrogen ($NH_x$: ammonia ($NH_3$) and particulate ammonium) in a subalpine deciduous forest in central Japan during a week in summer. The $NH_3$ concentrations ($0.50\;{\mu}g\;N\;m^{-3}$ on average) showed a clear circadian variation, i.e., high and low in the daytime and nighttime, respectively. The concentration of particulate ammonium in the coarse fractions was extremely low, whereas that for the PM2.5 fraction was relatively high $0.55\;{\mu}g\;N\;m^{-3}$ on average). The main inorganic ion components of PM2.5 at the study site were ammonium and sulfate. The exchange fluxes of $NH_x$ were bidirectional. Both the maximum and minimum values occurred in the daytime, i.e., $0.39\;mg\;N\;m^{-2}\;hr^{-1}$ of downward flux and $0.11\;mg\;N\;m^{-2}\;hr^{-1}$ of upward flux for $NH_3$ and $0.25\;mg\;N\;m^{-2}\;hr^{-1}$ of downward flux and $0.13\;mg\;N\;m^{-2}\;hr^{-1}$ of upward flux for PM2.5 ammonium. The exchange fluxes of $NH_x$ at night could be considered as zero. The mean deposition velocity during the research period was almost zero for both $NH_3$ and PM2.5 ammonium. The atmosphere-forest exchange of $NH_x$ in the forest during the study period was balanced. The remarkably large deposition of $NH_x$ was attributable to meteorological events such as showers the night before that thoroughly washed the forest canopy and subsequent clear skies in the morning, which enhanced convection. The cleaning effect of rainfall and the rapid change in convection in the early morning should be monitored to evaluate and generalize the gas and particle exchange in a forest.

  • $V_{2}O_{5}$/$TiO_{2}$ catalyst can be deactivated by ammonium salts formed by $SO_{2}$ oxidation and unreacted ammonium in presence of $SO_{2}$ in flue gas. The deactivation of catalyst by $SO_{2}$ depends on the $SO_{2}$ oxidation to $SO_{3}$. The oxidation of $SO_{2}$ is weakly affected by oxygen concentration, and strongly by the amount of vanadium loaded onto titania supports. Because unreacted ammonia is one of elements to form the ammonium salts, it is important to control the mole ratio of $NH_{3}/NOx$ in SCR. Thus the experiments about $NH_{3}/NOx$ were carried out. The reason of low activity of catalyst deactivated by ammonium salts is the change of pore volume. And TPD (Temperature Programmed Decomposition) was performed to find the decomposition of ammonium bisulfate on deactivated catalyst.

  • This paper was investigated the research regarding the effects of several factors such as initial ammonium nitrogen concentration, aeration rate. biomass amount and C/N ratio on nitrification process using synthetic wastewater and activated sludge obtained from wastewater treatment facility. As a result, in high ammonium nitrogen concentration above 100 mg/L, the pH of wastewater was dropped to pH 6.8. The increases of initial ammonium nitrogen concentration, aeration rate and initial biomass amount were linearly enhanced the removal rate of ammonium nitrogen. In the condition of C/N ratio of 0 to 3, high ammonium nitrogen removal rate was obtained.

  • Livestock wastewater containing high concentrations of ammonium and nitrate ions was pretreated with microbubbles and an Fe/MgO catalyst prior to its application in microbial fuel cells because high ion concentrations can interfere with current generation. Therefore, tests were designed to ascertain the effect of pretreatment on current generation. In initial tests, the optimal amount of catalyst was found to be 300 g/l. When 1,000 ml/min $O_2$ was used as the oxidant, the removal of ammonium- and nitrate-nitrogen was highest. After the operating parameters were optimized, the removal of ammonium and nitrate ions was quantified. The maximum ammonium removal was 32.8%, and nitrate was removed by up to 75.8% at a 500 g/l catalyst concentration over the course of the 2 h reaction time. The current was about 0.5 mA when livestock wastewater was used without pretreatment, whereas the current increased to $2.14{\pm}0.08mA$ when livestock wastewater was pretreated with the method described above. This finding demonstrates that a 4-fold increase in the current can be achieved when using pretreated livestock wastewater. The maximum power density and current density performance were $10.3W/m^3$ and $67.5W/m^3$, respectively, during the evaluation of the microbial fuel cells driven by pretreated livestock wastewater.

[1]. • In this study, basic physical properties were measured for ASCO EQ85 cationic surfactant of triethanolamine-ester quaternary ammonium salt and effect of pH on softening performance on fabrics was investigated using zeta potential measurement and adsorption experiment by quartz crystal microbalance. The CMC of the surfactant was near $3{\times}10^{-3}mol/L$ and the surface tension at CMC was about 40 mN/m. The interfacial tension measurement between 1 wt% aqueous solution and n-dodecane measured by spinning drop tensiometer showed that interfacial tension slightly increased with an increase in pH but the equilibration time was not affected by pH. The surfactant adsorption was found to increase with an increase in surfactant concentration and was also affected by pH of surfactant solution. The friction factor for fabrics treated with ASCO EQ85 surfactant was shown to increase with pH and better softening effect was found under acidic conditions. Half-life for foams generated with ASCO EQ85 surfactant solution increased with pH, which indicated an increase in foam stability with pH.

  • Ion-selective electrode responsive to the thiocynate ion prepared by using the quaternary ammonium salts as a active material and PVC as a membrane matrix. The effect of chemical structure and composition of active material, and the membrane thickness on the linear response. the detection limit, and Nernstian slope of the electrode studied. Under the above optimum conditions of membrane, the effect of pH and the selectivity coefficients to various interfering anions were compared and investigated. It was concluded that the functions of thiocynate ion-selective electrode(ISE) were closely related to the chemical structure of the quaternary ammonium salts. The linear response, and the detection limit of the electrode potential increased with the increase of the carbon chain length of the alkyl group in the quaternary ammonium salts in the ascending order of Aliquat 336T, TOAT, TDAT, and TDDAT. The optimum membrane thickness was 0.3mm. The electrode characteristics was better with the decrease of the concentration of active material, and the best concentration was 3 weight percent. The membrane potential was independent of the pH variation in the region from pH 2 to 12. The order of the selectivity coefficients is as follows:Cl $O_4$$^{[-10]}$$I^{[-10]}$ >N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ >B $r^{[-10]}$$F^{[-10]}$ >C $l^{[-10]}$ >O $A_{c}$ $^{[-10]}$ 〓S $O_4$$^{2-}$.
