Nitrifier consortium immobilized in Ca and Ba-alginate beads were packed into two bioreactors and the performances of bioreactors were evaluated for the removal of ammonia nitrogen from synthetic aquaculture water. The total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) concentration of the influent was continually kept about 2g TAN/㎥. At the HRT of 0.6hr, ammonia nitrogen removal rate of two bioreactors were about 52.6 and 51.0g TAN/$\textrm{m}^3$/day, respectively. At the respect of ammonia nitrogen removal, two bioreactor showed the similar abilities. The second trial with nitrifier consortium immobilized in Ca-alginate bead was carried out to evaluate the ammonia nitrogen removal rate for 35 days. The highest ammonia nitrogen removal rate was 82g TAN/$\textrm{m}^3$ when HRT was about 0.3hr.
This study aimed to obtain equilibrium concentration on adsorption removal of ammonia nitrogen by activated carbon, to express the adsorption characteristics following Freundlich isotherm and also, based on the value obtained, to investigate the relationship between physical characteristics of activated carbon and dynamics of ammonia nitrogen removal by obtaining rate constant and effective pore diffusivity. The results summarized from this study are as follows. It was noted that powdered activated carbon showed better adsorption ability than granular activated carbon. The value of constant (f) of Freundlich isotherm of powered activated carbon was $4.6{\times}10^{-8}$ which is bigger than that of granular activated carbon. The adsorption rate constant on ammonia nitrogen of powered activated carbon with high porosity and low effective diameter was highest as 0.416 hr-1 and the effective pore diffusivity ($D_e$) was lowest as $1.17{\times}10^{-6}cm^2/hr$, and the value of ammonia nitrogen adsorption rate constant of granular activated carbon was $0.149{\sim}0.195hr^{-1}$. It was revealed that, with the same amount of dosage, the adsorptive power of activated carbon with lower effective diameter and bigger porosity was better and its rate constant was also high. With a little adsorbent dosage of 2 g, there was no difference removal ability of ammonia nitrogen as change of adsorption properties.
The reduction of nitrogen to produce ammonia has been attracting much attention as a renewable energy technology. Ammonia is the basis for many fertilizers and is also considered an energy carrier that can power internal combustion engines, diesel engines, gas turbines, and fuel cells. Traditionally, ammonia has been produced through the Haber-Bosch process, in which atmospheric nitrogen combines with hydrogen at high temperature ($350-550^{\circ}C$) and high pressure (150-300 bar). This process consumes 1-2% of current global energy production and relies on fossil fuels as an energy source. Reducing the energy input required for this process will reduce $CO_2$ emissions and the corresponding environmental impact. For this reason, developing electrochemical ammonia-production methods under ambient temperature and pressure conditions should significantly reduce the energy input required to produce ammonia. In this review, we introduce the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction at ambient condition. Numerical studies on the electrochemical nitrogen reduction mechanism have been carried out through the computation of density function theory. Electrodes such as nanowires and porous electrodes have been also actively studied for further participation in electrochemical reactions.
In order to detect the way of absorption and metaboism of the urea it is sprayed on the surface of the leaves of sunflower. The sunflowers used in this study are grown in different conditions such that the one in nittogen aboundant and the other in nitrogen deficient soil, respectively. The urea-N, ammonia-N, amide-N, and 80% alcohol soluble-N in the leaves were quantitatively determined. All of the nitrogenous components measured are generally tended to increased with rising the concentration of urea except only amide-N at 24 hours after sprayed, and these were highly significances. It seemed that hydrolizing of urea into ammonia and carbon dixide and the assimilation of ammonia into other organic nitrogenous constituents were rapid in the young leaves than in the mature. It is interest that the amide content, in the young leaves and nitrogen defieient one were enhanced with the increasing concentration of urea, although in the mature leaves it did not show any change in the urea treatment. It is presumed that the assimilation rate of ammonia and the urease activity were lower in the matture leaves than in the young and nitrogen deficient leaves. No significance at 5% level showed all of the nitrogenous components except total nitrogen between nitrogen abundant and deficent leaves. Urea content was a high peak at first 12 hours, ammonia at 48 hours, and amide and alcohol soluble nitrogen at 96 hours, whence decrease4d the content of these constituents gradually. The total nitrogen content is not incrased obviously by only one time of urea spray in this study. When the concentration of urea was relatively high there appeared the wilting spots on t도 edge of leaves. As a whole, it seemed that sprayed urea was rapidly absorbed and taken part in nitrogen metabolism within relatively short period.
This study investigates the changes in ammonia fluxes, pH and total nitrogen of liquid ferrous sulfate-treated litter over 5 weeks. A total of 200 broiler chicks (Arbor Acres, 1 d old) was separated into two treatment groups (0 g and 100 g liquid ferrous sulfate/kg litter) with four replications of 25 birds in each group. Liquid ferrous sulfate was sprayed on the litter by using a small sprayer. There was no difference (p>0.05) in the ammonia fluxes observed between the control and liquid ferrous sulfate treatment groups at 0, 1, and 5 weeks, except for 2, 3 and 4 weeks. At 5 weeks, the litter pH and total nitrogen content did not show any difference (p>0.05) between the control and liquid ferrous sulfate treatment groups. In conclusion, the use of liquid ferrous sulfate is not a suitable for use in poultry litter to reduce ammonia and pH or improve the total nitrogen content.
Industrial use of microwave heating as an alternative to conventional heating is becoming popular mainly due to dramatic reductions in reaction time. Therefore, this work experimentally determined the effect of microwave irradiation on ammonia nitrogen removal in wastewater. The effects of air flow rate (0.3~0.9 L/min), treatment temperature ($70{\sim}100^{\circ}C$), and initial pH (9~11) were characterized. As the air flow rate increased from 0.3 to 0.9 L/min, the ammonia removal rate constant (k) increased from -0.6642 to $-1.0755min^{-1}$. As the temperature increased from 70 to $100^{\circ}C$, k increased -0.0338 to $-1.0755min^{-1}$. As the pH increased from 9 to 11, k increased -0.2443 to $-1.0755min^{-1}$. Ammonia removal was strongly dependent on temperature and pH rather than air flow rate. The results show that microwave irradiation is effective in ammonia nitrogen removal in wastewater due to advantages of fast and effective processing.
Losses of nitrogenin the gaseous form were determined with closed systems in the filed under different vegetation types. Ammonia volatilization was greatest from the pine stand, and least from the sod stand, and was greatly reduced in all three sites in the rainy season due to the low temperature. There were only insignificant differences in the nitrogen dioxide volatilization from the soil of the three vegetation types. Losses of ammonia and nitrogen dioxide at various soil depth also showed little variation. Evidently the microbial activity responsible for the $NO_2$ loss was relatively unaffected by the changes in temperature and soil moisture content during the investigation.

Purpose: High concentrations of nitrogen exist in food wastewater, and when nitrogen is not properly treated and discharged, it can cause eutrophication in the aquatic ecosystem. Research design, data and methodology: In order to remove nitrogen using sodium hypochlorite, the BNCR tank was designed and installed in the step behind the biological treatment tank, and the data of pH, TOC, and T-N were collected after about a month of demonstration. Results: As a result of operating the BNCR tank, total nitrogen decreased by about 83% on average. The total nitrogen in the second sedimentation tank before going through the BNCR tank must be removed and finally discharged after nitrogen is removed above the legal standard of 60 mg/L. Conclusions: If BNCR tank is added to the process currently applied to nitrogen removal and operated, ammonia nitrogen can be removed more efficiently. However, the disadvantage is that nitric acid nitrogen and nitric acid nitrogen cannot be removed. If these disadvantages are supplemented and optimized in the future, it will be helpful for workplaces that are having difficulty removing nitrogen.

Among all the nitrogen species present in the atmosphere, ammonia forms a considerable portion along with the nitrogen oxides. The major sources of atmospheric ammonia are animal feedlot operations including emission from excreta of domestic animals and agricultural activities, followed by emission from synthetic fertilizers, biomass burning and to some lesser extent, fossil fuel combustion. Ammonia emission factor, expressed as the weight of ammonia per unit weight, volume, or duration of the activity emitting it, is generally used in developing emission estimates for emission inventories. The factors determining ammonia loss from soil or from manures are the temperature, pH, humidity, precipitation and the velocity of wind above it.
Two combined autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) and biofilter (BF) systems were operated to treat the piggery wastewater and the ammonia offgas. Experimental results indicated that the organic removal efficiency of ATAD-2, operated with oxygen, was higher than that of ATAD-1, operated with air. The concentration of ammonia in ATAD-2 offgas was higher compared to ATAD-1 offgas, but the total amount of ammonia produced from ATAD-2 was less than that from ATAD-1 due to the lower oxygen flowrate. The ammonia gas produced from both ATAD reactors was successfully removed by the BF. The BF-1, connected with ATAD-1, removed 93% of ammonia at the loading rate of $9.4g\;NH_3-N/m^3/hr$. The BF-2, connected with ATAD-2, removed 95% of ammonia gas at the loading rate of $8.1g\;NH_3-N/m^3/hr$. As the nitrification process continued, pH value of recirculating solution continuously decreased due to the accumulation of nitrate. When the ammonia loading rate was less than $22.7g\;NH_3-N/m^3/h$, the proper replacing cycle of recirculating solution was in the range of 10 to 11 days. Almost 90% of total mass of nitrogen fed into the each BF was confirmed from the mass balance on nitrogen.
