This research examined the effect of ammonia nitrogen loading rate(NVLR) on the anaerobic digestion of slurry-typed swine wastewater. The anaerobic reactor was used an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) process. This UASB reactor was operated at a NVLR of $0.02{\sim}0.96kg{NH_4}^+-N/m^3/day$. The methane content showed the range of 73.3~77.9% during the steady state period. Free ammonia(FA) concentration increased over inhibition level as pH increase from 7.3 to 8.2. However, in consideration of methane content, methane producing bacteria (MPB) inhibition by FA and total ammonia(TA) was not observed. A stepwise increase of the NVLR resulted in a deterioration in the COD removal rate in UASB reactor. The COD removal rate were 60% for NVLR up to $0.55kg{NH_4}^+-N/m^3/day$. As the NVLR increased from 0.09 to $0.96kg{NH_4}^+-N/m^3/day$, the biogas production rate varied from 3.71 to 9.14L/d and the methane conversion rate of the COD varied from 0.32 to $0.20m^3CH_4/kg$ COD removed. Consequently, in considerations of FA concentration, COD removal rate, and $CH_4$ production rate, the UASB reactor must be operated to lower than $0.40kg{NH_4}^+-N/m^3/day$ of NVLR.

Sewage sludge has been widely used as an organic fertilizer in agriculture. However, sewage sludge can cause serious malodor problems resulting from the decomposition of organic compounds in anaerobic conditions. The malodor of sewage sludge mainly occurs due to a low carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N), high moisture, and low temperature, which are ideal conditions for ammonia emissions. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the reduction of the odor-causing ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) in sewage sludge by co-application of microbes and methanol (MeOH). The physico-chemical properties of the municipal sewage sludge showed that the odor was mainly caused by a higher NH3-N content (2932.2 mg L-1). Supplementation with MeOH (20%) as a carbon source in the sewage sludge significantly reduced the NH3-N up to 34.2% by increasing C/N ratio. Furthermore, the sewage sludge was treated with the NH3-N reducing and plant growth promoting (PGP) bacteria Stenotrophomonas rhizophila SRCM 116907. The treatment with S. rhizophila SRCM 116907 significantly increased the seedling vigor index of Lolium perenne (10.3%) and Chrysanthemum burbankii (42.4%). The findings demonstrate that supplementing sewage sludge with methanol significantly reduces ammonia emissions, thereby mitigating malodor problems. Overall, the study highlights the potential of using a microbial and methanol approach to improve the quality of sewage sludge as an organic fertilizer and promote sustainable agriculture.

The selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia was carried out in the presence of natural manganese ore (NMO) and manganese as catalysts using a homemade 1/4" reactor at $10,000hr^{-1}$ of space velocity. The inlet ammonia concentration was maintained at 2,000 ppm, with an air balance. The manganese catalyst resulted in a substantial ammonia conversion, with adsorption activation energies of oxygen and ammonia of 10.5 and 22.7 kcal/mol, respectively. Both $T_{50}$ and $T_{90}$, defined as the temperatures where 50% and 90% of ammonia, respectively, are converted, decreased significantly when alumina-supported manganese catalyst was applied. Increasing the manganese weight percent by 15 wt% increased the lower temperature activity, but 20 wt% of manganese had an adverse effect on the reaction results. An important finding of the study was that the manganese catalyst benefits from a strong sulfur tolerance in the conversion of ammonia to nitrogen.
BACKGROUND: Concerns have been raised about the impact of recent high concentrations of fine dust on human health. Ammonia(NH3) reacts with sulfur oxides and nitrogen compounds in the atmosphere to form ultrafine ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate (PM2.5). There is a growing need for accurate estimates of the amount of ammonia emitted during agricultural production. Therefore, in this study, ammonia emissions generated from the cultivation of leafy perilla in plastic houses were determined. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cow manure compost, swine manure compost, and poultry manure compost each at 34.6 ton ha-1, the amount commonly used by farmers in the field, was sprayed on the soil surface. Just after spraying cow manure compost, swine manure compost, and poultry manure compost, the ammonia was periodically measured and analyzed to be 22.5 kg ha-1, 22.8 kg ha-1, and 85.2 kg ha-1, respectively. The emission factors were estimated at 70.0 kg-NH3 ton-N, 62.8 kg-NH3 ton-N, and 234.1 kg-NH3 ton-N, respectively. Most ammonia was released in the two weeks after application of the compost and then the amount released gradually decreased. CONCLUSION: Therefore, it is necessary to improve the emission factor through a study on the estimation of ammonia emission by type of livestock manure and major farming types such as rice fields and uplands, and to update data on the production, distribution, and sales of livestock manure.
The purpose of this study is to improve the system for biological nitrogen oxidizing process in sewage and wastewater. A bacterium having high abilities to oxidize of nitrogen was one of the possessed on Lab. The strain was identified to Bacillus sp. A8-8, based on the physiological and biochemical properties. And the strain has ability degradation crude oil. In comparison with oxidizing rates with changing initial pH and temperature, the strain Bacillus sp. A8-8 was nitrogen oxidizing ability and growth rate on the various of pH, temperature. oxidizing rates of the strain in sewage and wastewater were about 48% and 62%, respectively. The nitrogen oxidizing rate was increased in proportion to the initial concentration of glucose. The microorganism, Bacillus sp. A8-8, immobilized in ceramic carrier were evaluated for the oxidation of ammonia in culture media.
Abstract: In order to improve the system for biological nitrogen oxidizing process in sewage and wastewater, a bacterium having high abilities to oxidize of nitrogen was isolated from wastewater and polluted soils. The strain was identified to Bacillus sp. CH-N, based on the physiological and biochemical properties. Characteristics and oxidizing ability of both ammonia and nitrite were examined for the strain, Bacillus sp. CH-N. The strain showed the oxidizing rate about 80% to 90% on the sewage and wastewater after 48 h culture. The nitrogen oxidizing rate was increased in proportion to the initial concentration of glucose. The microorganism, Bacillus sp. CH-N cell immobilized on ceramic carrier were evaluated for the oxidation of ammonia in culture media.
To understand the efficient process of biological nitrogen removal (BNR) system, the structure of bacterial communities in nitrification reactors was analyzed using PCR and terminal restriction fragment length poly morphism (I-RFLP) methods. In this study, we used an advanced treatment system with plotting media, Nutrient Removal Laboratory system, or the rumination type sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system. The terminal restriction fragments of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and other $\beta-proteobacteria$ were observed in all of three BNR systems. The nucleotide sequence analysis of terminal restriction fragments showed that Nitrosomonas and Nitrosolobus were major populations of AOB in SBR system, whereas uncultured $\beta-proteobacteria$ and Cardococcus australiensis were the predominant groups in other two BNR systems. Also the SBR system may be more efficient to enrich AOB. These results indicate that the different structure of bacterial community may be developed depending on the wastewater treatment systems, although the same influent is used.
The ammonia volatilization from two different soils, an acidic normal soil and a neutral tidal soil applied with different nitrogen sources was investigated through a laboratory incubation experiment conducted at about $30^{\circ}C$ for 18 days. Results obtained were summerized as follows; 1. The ammonia volatilizat ion was increased by the urea application that increased soil pH. 2. Ammonium sulfate and ammonium chloride did not raise reduced soil pH over 7.30 and showed little ammonia volatilization keeping the $pK_b$ value of 4.72-3 3. An organic fertilizer (Miweon Co. made) raised pH of the tidal land soil little more than ammonium sulfate or ammonium chloride ; however, it did not increase the ammonia volatilization as much as from other fertilizer treatment plots of the same pH, which may mean that the organic fertilizer is effective in reducing ammonia volatilization. 4. It seemed that easier volatilization of ammonia from urea may occor in ordinary soil low in original pH than from tidal soil by the application of urea which may mean that if the pH of soils are the same, greater volatilization would result from the former than the latter. 5. Application of raw straw to tidal soil lowed pH and reduced ammonia volatilization.

Fermented skate has a unique ammonia-like flavor. The flavor is preferred by a few lovers of skate muscle, while women and young people may be sensitive to the odor. Organic acids were used to reduce the ammonia-like odor in fermented skate and to investigate the physicochemical properties. Fermented skate muscles were sprayed with 20 mL of acetic acid or citric acid (3, 5, and 7%) for 30 seconds and stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 15 days. The physicochemical properties of organic acid-treated fermented skate were investigated during storage. The control, which was treated with distilled water, showed a higher pH value than the samples treated with organic acids. The $L^*$ value increased with increasing organic acid concentration, while the $a^*$ and $b^*$ values were not significantly different among the samples. The trimethylamine (TMA) decreased with increasing in the organic acid concentration, but it was not significantly different after 9 days of storage. Ammonia-type nitrogen and ammonia-like flavoring, decreased with increasing in the organic acid concentration, whereas ammonia-type nitrogen increased with a storage period more than 6 days. In conclusion, fermented skate treated with 7% citric acid was the best treatment to reduce the ammonia-like odor.
The effect of nitrate, nitrite and ammonia as inorganic nitrogen sources on the modulation of nitrogen metabolism of Botryococcus braunii UTEX.-572 has been studied under aeration. The primary process in the regulation of nitrogen metabolism by this alga has the nitrate uptake system. This uptake of nitrate operation was immediately inhibited by the presence of 0.5 mM of ammonium and reversed by 0.2∼0.3 mM ammonium. When cell were exposed to 5 mM of ammonium for 24 hours the activity of nitrate reductase became inactive.
