  • Optical resolution of a-amino acid (tryptophan and tyrosine) optical isomers was achieved by a pressure driven membrane separation process, using self-supporting crosslinked membranes base on polysaccharide with different swelling indices that ranged from 100 to 70%. The membranes prepared by casting and drying the polymer solution containing 5wt% acetic acid on an acryl plate followed by crosslinking with glutaraldehyde were characterized using such analytical methods as FTIR and swelling index measurements. On the way of separating the optical isomers, several experimental factors such as the concentration of the feed solutions, operating pressure and temperature, and degree of crosslinking of the membranes have been studied. When the chitosan membranes with 70% of swelling index were used , almost complete optical resolution was obtained; 97.92% of enantiomeric excess (ee %) and 2.26 g/$m^2$ㆍh of flux. The operating pressure and the concentration of feed solutions were respectively 1.0 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 0.49 mmol/L.

  • During the screening for anti-complementary activity from 10 kinds of edible mushrooms, an alkali extract of Agaricus bisporus showed the highest activity through the complement fixation test. The crude anti-complementary material(AB-0) from Agaricus bisporus was obtained by the alkali extraction using 1 N NaOH containing 5% urea$(65^{\circ}C)$, followed by methanol reflux, dialysis and lyophilization. The fraction AB-O showed potent anit-complementary and anti-tumor activity against sarcoma-180 injected mice. The fraction AB-0 was divided into 5 fractions(AB-20, AB-40, AB-60, AB-80, AB-A) by gradual acetone precipitation. Among them fraction AB-20 having the highest activity and yield was found to contain 39% carbohydrate and 46% protein. The anti-complementary protein-bound polysaccharide AB-20 consisted of glucose, arabinose, xylose, galactose and mannose in a molar ratio of 6.49 : 1.98 : 1.24 : 1.00 : 0.71, respectively and its main component amino acids were alanine(20.59%), isoleucine(16.85%), glutamine+glutamic acid(14.12%) and leucine (13.83%). The anti-complementary activity of AB-20 was decreased greatly by periodate oxidation, but decreased slightly by pronase digestion. This indicates that polysaccharide moiety is corelated with the anti-complementary activity and that protein is also involved in the activity.

  • Chitin is the most abundant natural amino polysaccharide and is estimated to be produced annually almost as much as cellulose. It has become of great interest not only as an under utilized resource, but also as a new functional material of high potential in various fields. In addition, chitin and chitosan are recommended as suitable functional materials, because these natural polymers have excellent properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity and adsorption properties, etc. (omitted)

  • Some trials to alter the structure of extracellular polysaccharides by means of biotransformation and microbial modification have been reported. Seaweed alginate was acetylated by intact and resting cells of Pseudomonas syringae ATCC 19304. Glucose analogs such as 3-O-methyl-D-glucose used as sole carbon sources was directly incorporated into curdlan by agrobacterium sp. ATCC 31749. The 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucose (glucosamine)and 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose (N-acetylglucosamine) were incorporated into microbial cellulose by Acetobacter xylinum ATCC 10245. The changed monomeric composition in pullulan by Aureobasidium pullulans ATCC 42023 as well as zooglan by Zoogoea ramigera ATCC 25935 was another effect of glucose analogs used a carbon source. There was no effect of glucose analogs found in polysacharide-7 (PS-7) produced by Beijerinckia indica. ATCC 21423.

  • The major classes of antimicrobial agents for textiles include organo-metallics, phenols, quaternary ammonium salts, and organo-silicones. These finishes should be durable, have selective activity towards undesirable organisms, be compatible with other finishes and dyes, and be nontoxic to man [1]. Chitosan, as a deacetylated derivative of chitin, is a natural, non-toxic and biodegradable polymer. Chitosan is also known as an antimicrobial polysaccharide due to antimicrobial action of the amino group at the C-2 position of the glucosamine residue.(omitted)

  • Chitosan, an unbranched (1-4)-linked-2-amino-2-deoxy-$\beta$-D-glucan, is prepared by chemical N-deacetylation of chitin, which is the main structure element of the cuticles of crab, shrimp, and insects, and is found in the cell walls of bacteria. It has the same main chain in its molecule like that of natural heparin. Heparin, an anionic polysaccharide, is the best of anticoagulants that have been found so far. In this study, to improve the blood compatibility of chitosan, 2-(methacrylovloxy)-ethyl-2-(trimethylammonium)ethyl phosphate(MTP) with phospholipid polar groups was grafted on the chitosan membranes and the biochemical properties the MTP-grafted chitosan membranes were investigated.
