  • Second-order rate constants ($k_N$) have been measured spectrophotometrically for reactions of 3,4-dintrophenyl 2-furoate (2) with a series of secondary alicyclic amines in 80 mol % $H_2O$/20 mol % dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at 25.0 ${^{\circ}C}$. The Bronsted-type plot exhibits a downward curvature for the aminolysis of 2, which is similar to that reported for the corresponding reactions of 2,4-dintrophenyl 2-furoate (1). Substrate 2 is less reactive than 1 toward all the amines studied but the reactivity difference becomes smaller as the amine basicity increases. Dissection of the second-order rate constants into the microscopic rate constants has revealed that the reaction of 2 results in a smaller $k_2/k_{-1}$ ratio but slightly larger $k_1$ value than that of 1. Steric hindrance has been suggested to be responsible for the smaller $k_1$ value found for the reactions of 1, since the ortho-substituent of 1 would inhibit the attack of amines (i.e., the $k_1$ process).

  • Novel multiblock copolymers, based on segmented sulfonated hydrophilic-hydrophobic blocks, were synthesized and investigated for their application as proton exchange membranes. A series of segmented sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)-b-polyimide multiblock copolymers, with various block lengths, were synthesized via the coupling reaction between the terminal amine moieties on the hydrophilic blocks and naphthalene anhydride functionalized hydrophobic blocks. Successful imidization reactions required a mixed solvent system, comprised of NMP and m-cresol, in the presence of catalysts. Proton conductivity measurements revealed that the proton conductivity improved with increasing hydrophilic and hydrophobic block lengths. The morphological structure of the multiblock copolymers was investigated using tapping mode atomic force microscopy (TM-AFM). The AFM images of the copolymers demonstrated well-defined nanophase separated morphologies, with the changes in the block length having a pronounced effect on the phase separated morphologies of the system. The self diffusion coefficient of water, as measured by $^1H$ NMR, provided a better understanding of the transport process. Thus, the block copolymers showed higher values than Nafion, and comparable proton conductivities in liquid water, as well as under partially hydrated conditions at $80^{\circ}C$. The new materials are strong candidates for use in PEM systems.

  • A new series of acyclic mononuclear gadolinium(III) complexes have been prepared by Schiff-base condensation derived from 5-methylsalicylaldehyde, diethylenetriamine, tris(2-aminoethyl) amine, triethylenetetramine, N,N-bis(3-aminopropyl)ethylene diamine, N,N-bis(aminopropyl) piperazine, and gadolinium nitrate. All the complexes were characterized by elemental and spectral analyses. Electronic spectra of the complexes show azomethine (CH=N) within the range of 410-420 nm. The fluorescence efficiency of Gd(III) ion in the cavity was completely quenched by the higher chain length ligands. Electrochemical studies of the complexes show irreversible one electron reduction process around -2.15 to -1.60 V The reduction potential of gadolinium(III) complexes shifts towards anodic directions respectively upon increasing the chain length. The catalytic activity of the gadolinium(III) complexes on the hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenylphosphate was determined. All gadolinium(III) complexes were screened for antibacterial activity.

  • Ultrafine NiO/YSZ (Yttria-Stabilized Zirconic) composite powders were prepared by using a glycine nitrate process (GNP) for anode material of solid oxide fuel cells. The specific surface areas of synthesized NiO/YSZ composite powders were examined with controlling pH of a precursor solution and the content of glycine. The binding of glycine with metal ions occurring in the precursor solution was analyzed by using FTIR. The characteristics of synthesized composite powders were examined with X-ray diffractometer, a BET method with $N_2$ absorption, scanning and transmission electron microscopies. Strongly acid precursor solution increased the specific surface area of the synthesized composite powders. This is suggested to be caused by the increased binding of metal ions and glycine under a strong acid solution of pH=0.5 that lets glycine consist of mainly the amine group of NH$_3$$^{+}$ After sintering and reducing treatment of NiO/YSZ composite powders synthesized by GNP, the Ni/YSZ pellet showed ideal microstructure very fine Ni Particles of 3-5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were distributed uniformly and fine pores around Ni metal particles were formed, thus, leading to an increase of the triple phase boundary among gas, Ni and YSZ.Z.

  • The ice storage system uses water for low temperature latent heat storage. However, a refrigerator capacity is increased and COP is decreased due to supercooling of water in the course of phase change from solid to liquid. This study investigates the cooling characteristics of the TMA-water clathrate compound including TMA (Tri-methyl-amine, $(CH_3)_3N$) of $20{\sim}25wt%$ as a low temperature latent heat storage material. The results showed that the phase change temperature and the specific heat is increased and the supercooling degree is decreased as the weight concentration of TMA increased. Especially, the clathrate compound containing TMA 25 wt% has the average phase change tempera ture of $5.8^{\circ}C$, the supercooling degree of $8.0^{\circ}C$ and the specific heat of 3.499 kJ/kgK in the cooling process. This can lead to reduction of operation time of refrigerator in low temperature latent heat storage system and efficiency improvement of refrigerator COP and overall system. Therefore, energy saving and improvement of utilization efficiency are expected.

  • The cure kinetics of a bisphenol A epoxy resin and polyoxypropylene diamine curing agent system are investigated in both dynamic and isothermal conditions by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In dynamic experiments, the shift of exothermic peaks obtained at different heating rates is used to obtain activation energy of overall cure reaction based on the methods of Ozawa and Kissinger. Isothermal DSC data at different temperatures are fitted to an autocatalytic Kamal kinetic model. The kinetic model is in a good agreement with the experimental data in the initial stage of cure. A diffusion effect is incorporated to describe the later stage of cure, predicting the cure kinetics over the whole range of curing process. Also, dynamic mechanical analysis is performed to evaluate the storage modulus and average molecular weight between crosslinkages.

  • [FeIII(BBA)DBC]ClO4 as a new functional model for catechol dioxygenases has been synthesized, where BBA is a bis(benzimidazolyl-2-methyl)amine and DBC is a 3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholate dianion. The BBA complex has a structuralfeature that iron cent er has a five-coordinate geometry similar to that of catechol dioxygenase-substrate complex. The BBA complex exhibits strong absorptionbands at 560 and 820 nm in CH3CN which are assigned to catecholate to Fe(III) charge transfer transitions. It also exhibits EPR signals at g = 9.3 and 4.3 which are typical values for the high-spin FeIII (S = 5/2) complex with rhombicsymmetry. Interestingly, the BBA complex reacts with O2 within an hour to afford intradiol cleavage (35%) and extradiol cleavage (60%) products. Surprisingly, a green color intermediate is observed during the oxygenation process of the BBA com-plex in CH3CN. This green intermediate shows a broad isotropic EPR signal at g = 2.0. Based on the variable temperature EPR study, this isotropic signalmight be originated from the [Fe(III)-peroxo-catecholate] species havinglow-spin FeIII center, not from the simple organic radical. Consequently,it allows O2 to bind to iron cen-ter forming the Fe(III)-superoxide species that converts to the Fe(III)-peroxide intermediate. These present data can lead us tosuggest that the oxygen activation mechanism take place for the oxidative cleavingcatechols of the five-coordinate model systems for catechol dioxygenases.

  • In Korea, traditional doenjang is manufactured using the conventional method at home and by small-scale enterprises. Because this age-old process depends on natural inoculation of various microorganisms, it is difficult to reproduce or maintain consistency in the final product quality across batches. Moreover, doenjang occasionally prepared by this method raises safety concerns related to aflatoxin, biogenic amine, and Bacillus cereus contamination. To develop starters that can be conveniently used at home or in small industry settings for the manufacturing of safe and flavor-improved doenjang, autochthonous microbe starters were developed in dried forms as ready-to-use starters. Each starter powder prepared by heat- or freeze-drying methods remained stable even after 24-week storage. These ready- to-use starter powders were successfully applied to lab-scale fermentation for the production of safe and flavor-improved doenjang. We believe that these ready-to-use starter powders will benefit small-scale enterprises in the manufacturing of doenjang of good reproducible quality.

  • This paper conducted mainly for forecasting the behavior of the shear connectors in steel-concrete composite beams based on the different factors. The main goal was to analyze the influence of variable parameters on the shear strength of C-shaped and L-shaped angle shear connectors. The method of ANFIS (adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system) was applied to the data in order to select the most influential factors for the mentioned shear strength forecasting. Five inputs are considered: height, length, thickness of shear connectors together with concrete strength and respective slip of the shear connectors after testing. The ANFIS process for variable selection was also implemented in order to detect the predominant factors affecting the forecasting of the shear strength of C-shaped and L-shaped angle shear connectors. The results show that the forecasting methodology developed in this research is useful for enhancing the multiple performances characterizing in the shear strength prediction of C and L shaped angle shear connectors analyzing.
