  • Aluminum brazing normally requires a careful control of temperature due to the small interval between brazing and melting temperatures for base materials. Unsuitable processing conditions, including brazing temperature outside admissible range, gap between brazed materials or inadequate flux feeding, can lead to joining defects. In this study, A357 was used as a filler metal for the brazing of pure aluminum base materials and brazed at temperatures in the semi-solid state. Interface microstructures with base materials were observed using optical metallography(OM) and scanning electron microcopy(SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS), and compared to conventional aluminum brazing.

  • Aluminum alloys have been widely used in many fields such as electronic, structure, aero-space and vehicle industries due to their outstanding thermal and electrical conductivity as well as low cost. However, they have some difficulties for using in brazing process because of the strong oxide layer of $Al_2O_3$ on the surface of Al alloy. In addition, their melting point is similar to that of brazing filler metal resulting in thermal damage of Al alloys. Therefore, it is very important to understand the brazing principles, filler metal and its properties such as wetting, capillary flow and dissolution of base metal in the Al brazing process. This paper reviews the brazing principles, aluminum alloys, and brazing fillers. In the case of brazing principle, some formula was used for calculation of capillary force and the dissolution to obtain the best condition of Al brazing. In addition, the advanced research trends in Al brazing were introduced including thermal treatment, additive for improving property and decreasing melting point in Al brazing process.

  • Solid state diffusion brazing of aluminum castings (AC4C) and wrought alloys (Al6061) was conducted in order to improve thermal conductivity and temperature uniformity of the aluminum heater which was generally fabricated by casting method. Tensile strength and thermal conductivity are raised with increasing brazing temperature, obtaining 122.5 MPa and $206W/m{\cdot}K$ at $540^{\circ}C$ 5hrs brazing conditions, respectively. The diffusion brazed heater, shows maximum temperature difference of $4^{\circ}C$, exhibits a enhanced temperature uniformity compared with the cast heater having the maximum temperature difference of $11^{\circ}C$.

  • In aluminum brazing processes, corrosive flux, which is used in preventing oxidation, is currently raising environmental concerns because it generates many pollutants such as dioxin. The brazing process involving non-corrosive flux is known to encounter difficulties because the melting temperature of the flux is similar to that of the base material. In this study, a new brazing filler material is developed based on aluminum and non-corrosive flux composite powder. To minimize the interference of consolidation aluminum alloy powder by the flux, the flux is intentionally embedded in the aluminum alloy powder using a mechanical milling process. This study demonstrates that the morphology of the composite powder can be varied according to the mixing process, and this significantly affects the relative density and mechanical properties of the final filler samples.

  • This study investigates the melting point and brazing properties of the aluminum (Al)-copper (Cu)-silicon (Si)-tin (Sn) alloy fabricated for low-temperature brazing based on the alloy design. Specifically, the Al-20Cu-10Si-Sn alloy is examined and confirmed to possess a melting point of approximately 520℃. Analysis of the melting point of the alloy based on composition reveals that the melting temperature tends to decrease with increasing Cu and Si content, along with a corresponding decrease as the Sn content rises. This study verifies that the Al-20Cu-10Si-5Sn alloy exhibits high liquidity and favorable mechanical properties for brazing through the joint gap filling test and Vickers hardness measurements. Additionally, a powder fabricated using the Al-20Cu-10Si-5Sn alloy demonstrates a melting point of around 515℃ following melting point analysis. Consequently, it is deemed highly suitable for use as a low-temperature Al brazing material.

  • In this study, in order to obtain a useful guide line for design and production of automotive heat exchanger components made of 4343/3003/4343 aluminum clad sheets, it was aimed to improve the understanding about the grain refinement effect on brazing characteristic of the clad sheets. Al-10Ti master alloy was used for grain refinement of 3003 core alloy, and the Ti inoculation level was systematically changed up to 0.1 wt%. The three-layer aluminum clad sheets were fabricated by hot roll bonding process. The effect of grain refinement on brazing characteristic of the clad sheets was investigated by evaluating wettability, bonding strength and sagging resistance.

  • One of the most important considerations to braze Cu-Al dissimilar materials is control of brittle metallic compound which makes it difficult to obtain a sound brazed joint. Nowdays, several attempts were made to control the metallic compound. But effective method for controlling metallic compound was not established. In this point of view, commercially pure aluminum and copper were used as base metal and Al-Si-X and Zn-Al-X alloy systems were developed as filler metal. Brazing was carried out to find optimum conditions for Cu-Al dissimilar joint. The results obtained in this study were summarized as follows: 1) The joint brazed by Al-Si-X filler metal showed good brazeability and mechanical properties. The tensile strength of the joint brazed over solidus temperature was more than 90% of Al base metal. Especially, the joint brazed at liquidus temperature was fractured in the Al base metal. 2) Fluorides fluxes(a mixture of potassium fluoro-aluminates) were used to improve surface cleanliness of base metal and wettability of Al-Si-X filler metal. It was melted at the temperature about 1$0^{\circ}C$ lower than that of the filler metal, and made appropriate brazing environment. Therefore, it could be a proper selection as flux.

  • In order to ensure the signal could be transported cocrrectly, the microwave devices made of Aluminmn alloys must be assembled and brazed flaw-freely. In this paper, a new approach of using contact reactive brazing (CRB) process to realize the compact brazing of Aluminum alloys was put forward. The reason for this is that CRB, which realizes bonding depending on the liquid alloy produced by metallurgy reaction between the materials to be joined, overcomes the limitation of traditional brazing that the macroscopically disorganized filling flow of liquid filler metal would result in defects in brazed seam. Joint ofLF21 (AA3003) with the compactness of over 95% was brazed by the method of CRB using Si powder as an interlayer. At last, the influence of the physical parameter related to the Si powder interlayer on the compactness of the joints was investigated in detail.
