Thermal Insulation Improvement by Laminated Adiabatic Structure Change in Holding Furnace with Molten Aluminum Alloy (알루미늄 용탕 보온용기의 단열재 적층구조 변경을 통한 보온성 향상)

  • Recently, aluminium usage in the automobile industry has been increased cause of its lightweight. The aluminium has a melting-solidification process in producing line and another melting process was needed in manufacturing process. Two times of melting process for making ingot and casting not only makes the loss of time and money but contaminates the air with Sox, Nox. For this reason, the holding furnace with laminated adiabatic material was developed. This holding furnace can deliver the molten aluminium directly to the industry needing molten aluminium. Recent holding furnace has above $15^{\circ}C/h$ of cooling rate and that causes solidification of molten aluminium. The ANSYS software was used to analysis the heat transfer. The adiabatic materials were laminated with optimized arrangement and holding furnace shape was changed with optimized modelling by ANSYS analysis for reducing the cooling rate of molten aluminium in holding furnace.

  • High strength PM aluminium alloys Al-Zn-Mg-Cu (7075 type) were studied by using commercially available powder blends and the sinter-forging technique for component production. Principal areas of focus include the response to PM processing, micro structural assessment and material properties of Aluminium sinter forged products. Green preforms are successfully sintered to near full density by solid-supersolidus liquid phase sintering. Sinter forging method can produce components with net shape and mechanical characteristics of the material have improved greatly. Properties of this new PM Al-alloy were found to be reproducible in an industrial production environment.

  • It was investigated that two rods of aluminium can be welded by hot extru-pressure welding method with stepped welding dies, and that the welding pressure on the welding surface were analyzed by computer simulation according to the stepped shapes of welding dies. It was known by computer simulation that welding pressure on the welding section of rods welded using stepped welding dies without eccentricity is lowerer than the welding pressure of rods welded using stepped welding dies with eccentricity of welding surface, and that the welding pressure on the welding section of rods using eccentric-inclined stepped welding dies is higher than the welding pressure of rods using stepped welding dies without eccentricity. And it was known by experiments that two rods of aluminium can be welded on the end sections by hot pressure welding method using eccentric-inclined stepped welding dies without relative rotational movement of contacted aluminium rods needed for the purpose of friction heating and pressure.

Atmospheric Corrosion of 7B04 Aluminum Alloy in Marine Environments

  • Outdoor exposure tests using of 7B04 aluminium alloy samples including plate, tensile and various SCC samples were carried out in Tuandao station, Shandong province (East of China) and Wanning station, Hainan province (South of China). Corrosion characteristics including weight loss, microstructure, tensile strength and SCC susceptibility were investigated. The corrosion rates in Tuandao and Wanning showed high to low and the corrosion rates changed to the following equation of $w=at^b$ (b<1). The corrosion of 7B04 aluminium alloy in Wanning was more serious than that in Tuandao. Pitting appeared at early stage of expose test, and it can be changed to general corrosion with test time extension. The 7B04 aluminium alloy of which specimen shapes are forging and thick plate also showed SCC (Stress corrosion cracking) in the marine atmosphere. The higher SCC sensitivity was observed in Wanning station than in Tuandao station. The 7B04 aluminium alloy with a high stress level was more sensitive to SCC. Intergranular and transgranular or a mixed mode of cracking can be observed in different marine exposure.

A study on friction welding of 2024 aluminium (2024 알루미늄의 마찰용접에 관한 연구)

  • 2024 Aluminium was welded by domestic manufactured continuous type friction welder. The problems and optimum condition were studied in 2024 Al-2024 Al cases. Mechanical tests and microstructure analysis were studeid. Interfacial temperature of welding was predicted by FDM. The obtained results are as follows: 1) In case of Al-Al, the optimum condition range was wide. 2) At the boundary zone, fine recrystallized zone was not harmful to the mechanical property and no growth of precipitation was observed. 3) In case of Al-Al, temperature gradient can be predictedby FDM and heat input can be taken as weld parameter.

  • Authors conducted a deduction of some parameters using the magnetic equivalent circuit method and a verification study of the thrust force control algorithm of a rotary-typed small-scaled linear induction motor for a railway transit. In a LIM, it is possible to express the parameters of the magnetic equivalent circuit into a function of the shape of the secondary aluminium plate and the airgap between the LIM primary core and the secondary aluminium plate. It means that the LIM properties can be changed considerably by the shape of the secondary aluminium plate and the airgap between the LIM primary core and the secondary aluminium plate. So, authors analyzed a tendency of changes of the magnetic equivalent circuit parameters and the LIM characteristics by changing of the airgap of the secondary aluminium plate of a rotary-typed small-scaled LIM. And authors conducted a verification study of the indirect vector control algorithm with constant slip frequency by using the rotary-typed small-scaled LIM tester set on the basis of the calculated LIM parameters. Finally authors accomplished a research on applicability for LIM railway transit.

The Properties of Aluminium Alloy Powder for Aluminothermy Process with $Mn_3O_4$ Waste Dust ($Mn_3O_4$ 분진의 Al 테르밋 반응용 Al 합금분말의 특성)

  • Aluminium powder as reductant in aluminothermy process needs a fine particle size under 200 mesh, but it is not easy economically to make that because of its high ductility and powder production cost. In order to reduce the production cost of fine aluminum powder as reductant of $Mn_3O_4$ waste dust, therefore, the properties of aluminium alloy powder were investigated. Aluminium alloy ingot containing large amount of manganese can be crushed easily because of its intermetallic compounds having brittle properties. The manganese is also main element in ferro-manganese. We can obtain economically Al-15%Mn alloy powder by mechanical comminution process. And the result of thermite reaction using Al-15% Mn alloy powder instead of pure Al powder showed the fact that can be obtained the ferro-manganese which have a high purity in case of using pure aluminium powder as reductant. The recovery of manganese from $Mn_3O_4$ waste dust with Al-15%Mn alloy powder was higher level of about 70% than about 65% in case of using aluminium powder, that is due to lower spatter loss.

A Study on the Optimum Design and Structural Behaviors of Aluminium Extrusions (알루미늄 압출재의 구조적 거동 특성 및 최적설계에 관한 연구)

  • Large aluminium extrusions can be used in rolling stocks and high speed vessels to reduce weight and labor cost. As sandwich plates with corrugated core have enough strength in transverse and longitudinal direction, welding lines to connect members are reduced and transverse members to strength longitudinal members are not required. However, for proper design of aluminium extrusion plates, understanding of structural behaviors of the exclusions are necessary. In this paper, at first, detailed finite element analysis is carried out to understand structural behavior. And then, simple theoretical formulas for design purpose are proposed using the orthotropic plate theory. Shear stresses resulting from end twisting which is characteristics of deep aluminium extrusion plates can also be calculated by the simple theoretical formula. Comparison with the results by detailed finite element analysis shows good accuracy of the proposed simple formulas. The simple formulas can be useful in repetitive analysis in the initial design stage.

Formation of Oxide Inclusions in the Molten Aluminium Alloys (알루미늄합금 용탕중의 산화개재물 형성)

  • Formation of oxide inclusions in the molten aluminium alloys during solidification is investigated. The oxidation tendency of both Al-4.5wt%Cu and Al-7wt%Si alloys is increased with melt temperature, particularly over $700^{\circ}C$. However, an Al-5wt%Mg alloy exhibits a decreasing mode over $800^{\circ}C$. The oxidation behavior with holding time shows the S curve shape for all of the alloys. It is shown that the mechanism of oxidation of Al-5wt%Mg alloy has a two step process different from that of Al-4.5wt%Cu and Al-7wt%Si alloys. The species and morphology of oxide inclusions in each alloy is also shown. The microstructure was more coarsened during solidification when the melt contains a large amount of oxide inclusion than when it doesn't. This result can be explained in terms of both the hindrance of heat extraction by oxide film formed on the aluminium melt and the difference of heat capacity between the aluminium melt and oxide inclusion during solidification.
