The influence of MgO addition on the densification and microstructure of alumina (Al2O3) was studied. Compacted alumina specimens were manufactured using ball-milling and one-directional pressing followed by sintering at temperatures below 1700℃. Relative density, shrinkage, hardness, and microstructure were investigated using analytical tools such as FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD. When the MgO was added up to 5.0 wt% and sintered at 1500℃ and 1600℃, the relative density exhibited an average value of 97% or more at both temperatures. The maximum density of 99.2% was with the addition of 0.5 wt% MgO at 1500℃. Meanwhile, the specimens showed significantly lower density values when sintered at 1400℃ than at 1500℃ and 1600℃ owing to the relatively low sintering temperature. The hardness and shrinkage data also showed a similar trend in the change in density, implying that the addition of approximately 0.5 wt% MgO can promote the densification of Al2O3. Studying the microstructure confirmed the uniformity of the sintered alumina. These results can be used as basic compositional data for the development of MgO-containing alumina as high-dielectric insulators.
Alumina added with Mn3O4 up to 7.5 cat% of Mn was prepared by conventional ceramic processing, and the sintering behavior and the optical properties of which were studied as functions of Mn content. Densification and grain growth of alumina were enhanced by Mn addition up to 0.75 cat% but was leveled off at higher concentrations. XRD revealed that $Al_2MnO_4$(galaxite) was formed as a second phase in the specimens with more than 0.75 cat% of Mn. Thus it is believed that either the solid solution effect of Mn or the Zener effect of $Al_2MnO_4$ becomes predominant in the sintering of Mn-added $Al_2O_3$ according to the additive concentration. UV-VIS reflectivity(SCI) spectra of Mn-added $Al_2O_3$ consisted of smooth bottoms in 300~550 nm wavelength range and plateaus at wavelengths longer than 650 nm. The reflectivity spectrum continuously moved downward, and the specimen color became darker and thicker with increasing Mn content. The CIELAB color change with respect to standard white was also dependent on the amount of Mn added: ${\Delta}L^*$(D65) negatively increased and ${\Delta}E_{ab}^*$(D65) positively increased with increasing Mn content, probably due to Mn substitution to Al and/or the mixing effect of black $Al_2MnO_4$ as a second phase.
In general, surface treatments of electroless Ni-P coating are extensively applied in the industry due to their excellent properties for considerable wear resistance, hardness, corrosion resistance. This study aims to determine the effect of ultrasonic conditions on the morphology, alumina content, roughness, hardness, and corrosion resistance of electroless Ni-P-Al2O3 composite coatings. The characteristics were analyzed by Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), x-ray diffractions (XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), etc. In this study, the effect of ultrasonic condition uniformly distributed alumina within Ni-P solution resulting in a smoother surface, lower surface roughness. Furthermore, the corrosion resistance behavior of the coating was analyzed using tafel polarization curves in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution at 25 ℃. Under ultrasonic, Al2O3 content in Ni-P composite solution increased from 0.5 to 5.0 g/L, Al2O3 content at 3.0 g/L was showed a significantly enhanced corrosion resistance. These results suggested that ultrasonic condition was an effective method to improve the properties of the composite coating.
Red mud is an inorganic by-product produced from the mineral processing of alumina from Bauxite ores. This study is to investigate characteristic with respect to curing conditions according to the red mud content. The results best of best showed that the water curing compressive strength better than atmospheric curing, steam curing.
$Al_{2}O_{3}/SiC$ nanocomposites were made by infiltrating partially sintered alumina bodies with polycarbosilane (PCS) solutions, which is a SiC polymer precursor, with pressureless sintering. The SiC content, densification, phases, strength, and microstructure were investigated with the processing parameters such as PCS solution concentration and heat treatment condition for PCS pyrolysis and sintering. The results were compared with those for pure alumina and nanocomposite samples made by the existing polymer precursor route (i.e. the PCS addition process). The SiC contents of up to 1.5 vol% were obtained by the PCS infiltration. PCS pyrolysis, followed by air heat treatment, was needed before sintering to avoid a cracking problem and to attain a densification as high as 98 % of theoretical. The nanocomposites exhibited significantly higher strength than pure alumina and those prepared by the PCS addition process despite larger grain size. Besides $\alpha-Al_{2}O_{3}/SiC$ and $\beta-SiC$ phases, mullite was present a little in the nanocomposites, which resulted from the reaction of $SiO_{2}$ in the pyrolysis product of PCS with the $Al_{2}O_{3}$ matrix during sintering. The nanocomposites had intagranular particles believed to be SiC, which is a typical feature of $Al_{2}O_{3}/SiC$ nanocomposites.
Effect of a flux composition on weld metal toughness in submerged arc welding with 60kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ grade C-Mo type wires was investigated and interpreted in terms of weld metal microstructure and hardenability. Flux workability was also studied by characterizing a weld bead profile. Compared to other weld metals, .weld metal used alumina basic flux with nickel showed lowest oxygen content, highest hardenability and the most acicular ferrite. The highest impact toughness of that weld metal, however, was attributed to the tough matrix due to the nickel rather than to the larger amount of acicular ferrite. Manganese silicate flux had better workability than alumina basic flux, showing broader welding conditions resulting in a depth-to-width ratio of 0.5. The composition of oxides in the weld metal was dependent on the flux composition, showing MnO-SiO$_2$-TiO in manganese silicate flux and MnO-SiO$_2$-Al$_2$O$_3$-TiO in alumina basic flux. MnO-SiO$_2$composition in both oxides was similar to a tephroite.
Porous thick film of alumina which is fabricated by freeze tape casting using a camphene-camphor-acrylate vehicle. Alumina slurry is mixed above the melting point of the camphene-camphor solvent. Upon cooling, the camphene-camphor crystallizes from the solution as particle-free dendrites, with the $Al_2O_3$ powder and acrylate liquid in the interdendritic spaces. Subsequently, the acrylate liquid is solidified by photopolymerization to offer mechanical properties for handling. The microstructure of the porous alumina film is characterized for systems with different cooling rate around the melting temperature of camphor-camphene. The structure of the dendritic porosity is compared as a function of ratio of camphene-camphor solvent and acrylate content, and $Al_2O_3$ powder volume fraction in acrylate in terms of the dendrite arm width.
