Prediction on Performance of Cascade Refrigeration System using Alternative Freon and Natural Refrigerants (대체 프레온 및 자연 냉매를 이용하는 이원 냉동시스템의 성능 예측)

  • In this paper, cycle performance analysis of cascade refrigeration system using alternative FREON refrigerants and natural refrigerants are presented to offer the basic design data for the operating parameters of the system. The operating parameters considered in this study include subcooled and superheated degree, and condensing and evaporating temperature, temperature difference of cascade heat exchanger in cascade refrigeration system. The COP of cascade refrigeration system increases with the increasing subcooled degree, but there is no significant changes with the increasing superheated degree. The COP of cascade refrigeration system depends on evaporating and condensing temperatures of cascade heat exchanger. Therefore, subcooled degree, evaporating and condensing temperature of cascade heat exchanger using alternative FREON refrigerants and natural refrigerants have an effect on the COP of this system. In this paper, COP of cascade refrigeration system using (R23 / R290), (R23 / R600), (R23 / R600a), (R23 / R717), (R744 / R404A) are higher 20 ~ 36 % than (R23 / R22), using R23 for low temperature system and R22 for high temperature system.

Performance of R502 Alternative Refrigerants for Low Temperature Applications (저온용 R502 대체냉매의 성능 평가)

  • In this study, 2 pure hydrocarbon refrigerants of R1270 (Propylene) and R290 (Propane) and 3 binary mixtures composed of R1270, R29O and R152a were tested in a refrigerating bench tester with a scroll compressor in an attempt to substitute R502 used in most of the low temperature applications. The test bench provided 3\sim3.5$ kW capacity and water and water/glycol mixture were employed as the secondary heat transfer fluids. All tests were conducted under the same external conditions resulting in the average saturation temperatures of -28 and $45^{\circ}C$ in the evaporator and condenser, respectively. Test results showed that all refrigerants tested had $9.6\sim18.7\%$ higher capacity and $17.1\sim27.3\%$ higher COP than R502. The compressor discharge temperature of R1270 was similar to that of R502 while those of all other refrigerants were $23.7\sim27.9\%$ lower than that of R502. For all alternative refrigerants, the amount of charge was reduced up to $60\%$ as compared to R502. Overall, these alternative refrigerants offer better system performance and reliability than R502 and can be used as long term substitutes for R502 due to their excellent environmental properties.

  • A domestic refrigerator is composed of many components such as a compressor, evaporator, capillary tube, and the cabinet which plays a great role on the cycle performance, even if it is not the basic component part in the cycle. Recently, the restriction policy on the energy-saving and environmentally friendly refrigerator is reinforced in our nation as well as developed countries. Therefore, in this paper, cycle simulations and experiments were carried out ito understand the characteristics of the cycle performance using CFC 12, HFC 134a, and HC 600a and to know how changes in UA(overall heat transfer coefficients$\times$ heat transfer area) of evaporator, the position displacement of compressor, and the rpm of fan in the freezing room which has influence on the cycle performance. The result shows that the quantitative values of simulation and experiment are not coincident, but their trend is similar. When HFC 134a and HC 600a were used without the change of design in refrigerator used CFC 12, the performance of system in HC 600a is 30% lower, and the case of HFC 134a is 10% lower than that of CFC 12 on freezing temperature.

External Condensation Heat Transfer Coefficients of R22 Alternative Refrigerants and R134a According to the Saturated Vapor Temperature Change on a Smooth Tube (수평관에서 R22 대체냉매 및 R134a의 포화증기 온도변화에 따른 외부 응축 열전달계수에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, external condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) were measured on a horizontal smooth tube at the saturated vapor temperature of $30^{\circ}C,\;39{\circ}C,\;and\;50^{\circ}C$ for R22, R410A, R407C, and R134a with the wall subcooling of $3\~8^{\circ}C$. The HTCs of all refrigerants are the highest at $30^{\circ}C,\;39{\circ}C,\;and\;50^{\circ}C$ in order. This trend is due to its excellent thermodynamic properties of the liquid phase. The measured data of HTCs were compared with the calculated ones by Nusselt's equation for a smooth tube. Measured HTCs of R22, R134a, R410A are $4.2\~7.5\%$ higher than prediction respectively while those of R407C are $15.6\~28.9\%$ lower than the prediction.

  • This paper presents the vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data measured for carbon dioxide and propane mixtures. Their mixtures were considered as promising alternative refrigerants due to good thermophysical properties and negligible environmental impact. The isothermal VLE data were measured at eight temperatures ranging from 253.15 to 323.15 K in the circulation type equipment with a view cell. The binary system was found to be a zeotropic mixture in the tested temperature range and could be correlated with sufficient accuracy by using the Peng-Robinson equation of state (PR EoS) with the van der Waals one fluid mixing rule. A comparison with published experimental VLE data has been carried out by means of the PR equation of state. In addition, the phase behaviors of carbon dioxide and propane mixtures were analyzed based on the measured VLE data.

  • Experiments have been conducted in order to make comparisons of characteristics of a R410a cycle with a R22 cycle in terms of cooling capacity and coefficient of performance (COP). The parameters examined in the present work include air flow rate, indoor and outdoor air temperatures, and indoor relative humidity. These two refrigeration cycles constructed for this study share all components except compressor, accumulator, oil separator, and piping. The measurements were made using a psychrometric calorimeter. The experimental results show that the R410A cycle has several advantages for indoor units while the R22 cycle yields better performance for outdoor units.

  • The plate heat exchanger is characterized. by low pressure drop and high heat transfer coefficient. The experimental study has been performed on the condensation heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the plate heat exchangers in this study. In the present study, a brazed type plate heat exchanger was investigated at a chevron angle of $45^{\circ},\;55^{\circ},\;and\;70^{\circ}$ with R410A. Condensation temperatures were varied from $20^{\circ}C\;and\;30^{\circ}C$, and mass flux was ranged from $13{\sim}34\;kg/m^{2}s$ with constant heat flux ($=5\;kw/m^{2}$). The heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop increased with the chevron angle. Average condensation heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops are decreased with increasing condensation tempeature.

  • This research describes the application of hydrocarbon refrigerants for heat pump system which is needed for fish farm. Tested refrigerants are HCFC-22 and hydrocarbon refrigerants(CARE 50 and ASR-20). CARE 50 is mixture of R-290 and R-170, and ASR-20 is mixture of R-152a, R-290 and other additives. Heat pump consist of shell and tube heat exchanger, scroll compressor, expansion valve and accumulator. Manual expansion valve is used for testing of wide range evaporating temperature. Hydrocarbon refrigerants show a good performance as an alternative for HCFC-22 in the range of evaporating temperature from $-6^{\circ}C$ to $6^{\circ}C$.

  • This study presents heat pump system characteristics using hydrocarbon refrigerants as alternative refrigerant for R-22 with respect to the variation of indoor load. Pure R-22 and R-290. R-600a, R-1270 were considered as working fluids The experimental apparatus was constructed to investigate the performance of heat pump using the air as a heat source. The performance were calculated based on compression shaft work. refrigeration capacity. pressure ratio, discharge temperature and COP. The experimental results show that the COP and refrigeration capacity of hydrocarbon refrigerants were higher than that of R-22. Through the above. hydrocarbon refrigerants are good alternatives in the heat pump system for R-22.

Simulation of Refrigerator Characteristics (냉장고 특성 시뮬레이션)

  • A general steady-state model for simulation on domastic refrigerator has been developed. The system model consists of various standard components such as evaporator compressor condenser capillary tube and cabinet. Cabinet is not system component but influence characteristic on domastic refrigerator. The purpose of this paper is to compare between characteristics of HFC 134a with CFC 12 in the domastic refrigerator and to predict the steady state cycle performance which is various specifications of cycle components under the continuous running conditions. As the results of simulation the coefficient of performance of both condenser and evaporator increases with increasing UA the increasing rate for condenser is greater than for evaporator.
