  • The surface structure of epitaxial $\alpha$-Fe2O3(0001) grown on $\alpha$-Al2O3(0001) has been investigated using intermediate-energy x-ray photoelectron diffraction. Comparison of experiment with quantum mechanical scattering theory reveals that the surface is Fe-terminated, and that the first four layer spacings are -41%, +18%, -8%, and +47% of the associated bulk values, respectively. these results agree reasonably well with the predictions of molecular mechanics and spin-density functional theory previously reported in the literature for the Fe-terminated surface. however, we find no evidence for and O-terminated surface predicted to be stable by spin-density functional theory.

  • I have investigated the effects of annealing on a polymeric $\alpha-C_3N_{4.2}$ at high pressure and temperature in the presence of seeds of crystalline carbon nitride films prepared by a high voltage discharge plasma. The samples were evaluated by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), infrared spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction(XRD). Notably, XPS studies of the film composition before and after annealing demonstrate that the nitrogen composition in $\alpha-C_3N_{4.2}$ material initially containing more than 58% nitrogen decreases during the annealing process and reaches a common, stable composition of ~43%. XPS analysis also shows that the nitrogen composition in the annealed films without polymeric $\alpha-C_3N_{4.2}$ was reduced from 35% to 17%. Furthermore the concentration of the sp$^3$bonded phase increased with the increment of the annealing temperature.

  • ${\alpha}$-amylase was investigated as an antistaling agent for Backsulgie, a traditional rice cake. Rice powder was mixed with ${\alpha}$-amylase, fermented for 2 hr at 37$^{\circ}C$, and steamed for 20 min. Rice cake was stored at room temperature or freezer for 4 days, and analyzed to determined the changes of chemical and sensory properties. When ${\alpha}$-amylase was added to rice cake, the content of reducing sugars and the yellow color of the cake were increased, and the water activity was decreased. Soft and moist textural properties were apparent in ${\alpha}$-amylase-added rice cakes by sensory evaluation. X-ray diffraction showed a V pattern after 4 days of storage which indicated the starch of rice cake was not retrograded. However, there was no significant difference in moisture content between enzyme-treated and non-treated rice cakes. Above results suggest that ${\alpha}$-amylase treatment produced dextrins which consequently bound with water and inhibited the retrogradation of rice cake.

  • The mechanical alloying (MA) effect in $\sigma$-VFe intermetallic compound was studied by neutron and X-ray diffraction. The structure of MA $\sigma$-VFe powders were characterized by the X- ray diffraction with Cu- $K\alpha$ radiation and neutron diffraction with monochromatic neutrons of $1.835\AA$ using a high resolution powder diffractometer (HRPD). Mechanical alloying of $\sigma$-VFe compound gives rise to a dramatic structural change. After 60 hours of MA, the Fe-Fe distribution of the $\sigma$- phase VFe tetragonal structure with 30 atoms in a unit cell is found to change into that of the $\sigma$-(V,Fe) solid solution with bcc structure, which is a stable phase at elevated temperature above $1200^{\circ}C$. A comparison of X-ray diffraction data for the $\alpha$-phase has been also made with the corresponding neutron diffraction data. The (101) and (111) diffraction peaks of the $\sigma$-phase was clearly observed only in neutron diffraction pattern, which is believed to be a characteristic feature due to the chemical atomic ordering of $\sigma$- VFe phase.

  • A novel synthetic route has been developed to prepare $\alpha$-cobalt hydroxide with intercalated nitrate anions. It was successfully synthesized by $\gamma$-ray irradiation under simple conditions, i.e., air atmosphere, without base. Under $\gamma$-ray irradiation, it leads to the formation of layered cobalt hydroxynitrate compounds which have small crystalline size and have the role of a generator of hydroxyl anion. Structural and morphological characterizations were performed by using power X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The component and thermal stability of the sample were respectively measured by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and thermal analyses, including thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

  • The phase transformations and the shape memory effect in In-rich Pb alloys and In rich-Sn alloys have been studied by means of X-ray diffractometry supplemented by metallographic observations. The alloys containing 12~15 at.%Pb transform from the ${\alpha}_2$ (fct) phase to the ${\alpha}_1$ (fct) phase by way of an intermediate phase (m phase) on cooling. The results of X-ray diffraction show that the metastable intermediate phase is observed both on cooling and heating, and has a face-centered orthorhombic (fco) structure. It is concluded that the ${\alpha}_1{\rightleftarrows}{\alpha}_2$ transformation is expressed by the ${\alpha}_1{\rightleftarrows}m{\rightleftarrows}{\alpha}_2$ transformation both on usual cooling and heating with the rate more than $8{\times}10^{-3}$ K/s. The $m{\rightleftarrows}{\alpha}_2$ transformation takes place with a mechanism involving macroscopic shear and are of diffusionless (martensitic) type. The temperature hysteresis in the two transformations is 10~13 K between the heating and cooling transformations. The alloys containing 0~11 at.%Sn are -phase solid solutions with a face centered tetragonal structure (c/a > 1) at room temperature, the axial ratio increasing continuously with tin content. The In-(11~15) at.%Sn alloys are mixtures of ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phases, the ${\beta}$ phase having a f. c. tetragonal structure (c/a < 1). The alloys containing more than 15 at.%Sn are ${\beta}$-phase solid solutions. The In-(12.9~15.0) at.%Sn alloys show a shape memory effect only when quenched to the temperature of liquid nitrogen, although their effect becomes weak and finally disappears after keeping at room temperature for a long time. The ${\beta}{\rightarrow}{\alpha}^{\prime}$ phase transformation is of the diffusionless (martensitic) type, and takes place between 330 K at 12.9 at.%Sn and 150 K at 14.5 at.%Sn. The hysteresis of transformation temperatures on heating and cooling is considerably large (29~40 K), depending on the composition. Both In-Pb and In-Sn alloys showed distinct the shape memory effects.

  • The relationships involving acid-consuming capacity and X-ray powder diffraction patterns of aluminum hydroxide gel were studied. The aging of antacid efficacy of aluminum hydroxide gel has also been characterized by using X-ray powder diffraction. The acid-consuming capacity decreased with progress of crystallization from amorphous alumino gel, and it was found that aged product at 80.deg. C had crystal structure of bohmite (.alpha.-Al.sub 2/O$_{2}$(OH)$_{2}$). It was also noted that the rate of aging decreased with decreasing pH of aluminum hydroxide gel.

  • The Schiff base cobalt(II) complex, bis[4-chloro-2-((E)-(isopropylimino) methyl) phenol]cobalt(II), has been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The phenomenological, kinetic and mechanistic aspects of the cobalt (II) complex have been studied by TG/DTG techniques. On the basis of the experimental data, the kinetic parameters such as activation energy, pre-exponential factor and entropy of activation were computed, and then the most probable mechanism function was estimated as $g({\alpha})={\alpha}^2$ 2. Hence the rate controlling process at all stages of decomposition is onedimensional diffusion (Parabolic model).

  • In order to achieve optimal reproductive performance, reliable morphological and physiological basic data on the reproductive organs are desirable. Adult male Korean ring-necked pheasant in inactive(mid of January) and active state (end of April) were used in this study. In addition, five active state pheasants were received a single dose of 60Co-ray 500 rads each to damage the testes. The objective of this study was to investigate the distribution pattern of protein gene product (PGP) 9.5 and ${\alpha}$-tubulin in the pheasant testes of the active, inactive and ${\gamma}$-ray irradiated active states. The results obtained were summarized as follows 1. The seminiferous tubules collected in inactive states( mid of Jan) showed narrow lumen, and the spermatogonia and the Sertoli cell were well preserved. The PGP 9.5 immunoreactivity of these tubules showed a positive reaction in paranucleus area of the spermatogonia, and a positive reaction in a small number of the Leydig cells in the interstitium of the seminiferous tubules. 2. The seminiferous tubules were dilated in active state(end of April) as compared with the inactive state. The PGP 9.5 reactivity in these tubules showed a positive reaction in many Leydig cells in the interstitium of the seminiferous tubules, and the testes of ${\gamma}$-ray irradiated group showed partially weak reaction in the interstitium of the seminiferous tubules. 3. The ${\alpha}$-tubulin reactivity in the seminiferous tubules of the inactive testes was strongly positive in the cytoplasmic process of the Sertoli cell from the basal stem region to the apical ex-tension. From the broad part of the stem region to the luminal space, the active testes showed a strong positive reaction. The ${\gamma}$-ray irradiated groups showed diminished reaction in the basal region.
