  • W-12.8wt%Cu-7.2%Pb powders were milled at room temperature and $-100^{\circ}C$ to investigate the mechanical alloying behavior of immiscible W-Cu-Pb system and the effect of milling temperature on the extent of alloying and microstructural refinement. W-Cu-Pb powder reached steady state after further extended milling due to Pb addition, compared to the W-Cu system. The cryomilling at $-100^{\circ}C$ caused the more refinement of powder particle size, and enhanced the solubility of Cu or Pb in W, compared with milling at room temperature. In W-12.8wt%Cu-7.2%Pb powder cryomilled at $-100^{\circ}C$, the monotectic temperature of Cu-Pb as well as the melting temperature of Cu was decreased by refinement of Cu crystalline size, and the most amorphization was occurred after milling for 150 h.

  • The effects of Ce on the mechanical alloying behavior and the thermal stability of Al-8wt.%Fe were investigated. The steady states of Al-8wt.%Fe and Al-8wt.%Fe-4wt.%Ce powders with 1.5 wt.% stearic acid as a process control agent were reached after mechanical alloying for 1000 minuties and 1300 minuties respectively at the conditions of the impeller revolving velocity of 300 rpm and the ball to powder input ratio of 50 : 1. The hardness of Al-8wt.%Fe specimen hot extruded and isothermally aged at various temperatures for up to 1000 hours decreased rapidly at 50$0^{\circ}C$ and its high temperature ultimate tensile strength began to decrease at 40$0^{\circ}C$ with increasing aging time. The decrease in the hardness and ultimate tensile strength of the specimen were reduced substantially by addition of Ce. It was thought to be due to the formation of thermally stable A14Ce and All3Fe3Ce intermetallic compounds.

  • Al/AlN composites were synthesized by mechanical alloying using process control agents(PCAs). Three different PCAs which contain N element, were examined to see the effectiveness of ball-milling and the nitridation during sintering. Among examined PCAs, $C_8H_6N_4O_5$ was the most effective to facilitate ball-milling and to form nitrides during a subsequent sintering. By a proper control of ball-milling and sintering, we could obtained surface-hardened Al-based composites.

  • Ni-13%Cr and Ni-70%Cu alloy tapes were prepared by using high purity metal powders as starting materials. The Ni-13%Cr and the Ni-70%Cu mixtures were isostatically pressed, sintered, rolled and texture-annealed. SEM EDS analysis showed that copper and nickel atoms were completely mixed, while the alloying between the chromium powders and the nickel powders was incomplete. In spite of incomplete alloying between nickel and chromium powders, sharp cube-texture was developed for the Ni-13%Cr tape as well as the Ni-70%Cu tape.

  • 590MPa grade weldable steels were gas metal arc welded with flux cored wires. Welding parameters such as current, voltage, and speed were varied independently. Effects of each parameter on the strength and chemical composition of weld metal were investigated. Increase of voltage caused decrease of weld metal tensile strength due to the low recovery of alloying elements such as carbon and manganese. On the contrary, increase of current and speed resulted in increase of weld metal strength because of higher recovery of the alloying elements.

  • Nickel base brazes containing boron and silicon as melting point depressants are used extensively in the joining and repair of hot-section components in next generation nuclear reactor and aero-engine. Therefore, the present study has investigated the preliminary applicability of nickel based alloying nano powders. Nano Ni-based alloying powders synthesized by Pulsed Wire Evaporation (PWE) method. It's powder morphology and phase transformation temperature were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). The powder particle size was approximately 10${\sim}$100nm and exhibits a quite even equiaxed shape. The results of DSC measurement show that both the nano Inconel 625 nano powder and Inconel 718 nano powder presents similar liquidus temperatures approximately $1373^{\circ}C$ and $1380^{\circ}C$ respectively.

  • MoSi$_2$-TiC composite powders were fabricated by in-situ reaction through mechanical alloying. Also the monolithic MoSi$_2$ as well as TiC were synthesiced by mechanical alloying for comparison. An abrupt increase of vial surface temperature was detected due to a sudden reaction between elemental powders during milling. The reaction time for synthesis of composite powders decreased with increasing the content of (Ti+C) powder. It was found that a significant decrease of Ti grain size was observed with increasing the milling time. And the synthesis reaction of MoSi$_2$-TiC composite powders were largely dependent on the reaction between Ti and C powders.

  • In this study, the thermodynamic and magnetic properties of alloying element substituted B2 FeAl systems have been investigated using the all-electron FLAPW method based on the GGA. It was shown that the important changes take place in the structural properties as well as in the magnetism when alloying element is substituted by Fe or Al site in B2 FeAl. Detailed discussion on the thermodynamic and magnetic properties and electronic structure of these intermetallic compounds will be given.

  • To add alloying elements into a pure copper melt, the wire-feeding efficiency of cored (alloy containing) wire was evaluated using a commercial, computational fluid-dynamics program. The model design was based on an industrial-scale production line. The variables calculated included wire feed rate, melt temperature, wire diameter, melt flow rate and wire temperature. Efficiency was evaluated after a series of calculations based on the penetration depth of the alloy-wire into the molten copper bath. Of the five variables investigated, the wire feed rate and wire diameter were the most influential factors affecting the feeding efficiency of the cored-wire.

  • Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been rapidly expanding from IT based applications to uses in electric vehicles (EVs), smart grids, and energy storage systems (ESSs), all of which require low cost, high energy density and high power density. The increasing demand for LIBs has resulted in increasing price of the lithium source, which is a major obstacle to wider application. To date, the possible depletion of lithium resources has become relevant, giving rise to the interest in Na-ion batteries (NIBs) as promising alternatives to LIBs. A lot of transition metal compounds based on conversion-alloying reaction have been extensively investigated to meet the requirement for the anodes with high energy density and long life-time. In-depth understanding the electrochemical reaction mechanisms for the transition metal compounds makes it promising negative anode for NIBs and provides feasible strategy for low cost and large-scale energy storage system in the near future.
