Allowable stress design(ASD) method has been widely used to design steel structures such as boiler and heat recovery steam generator(HRSG) of power plant. However, many researchers are recently intrested in road and resistance factor design(LRFD) method which may take the place of ASD. In this work, the weight calculation of steel structure was compared when ASD and LRFD were applied respectively. For the calculation of weight of steel structure, computer program was developed and applied to obtain beam weight. Using this program and GTSTRUDL, structural design program, weight of steel structure is calculated. As a result of weight calculation, maximum 5.4% of weight reduction is achieved among examples of this study by applying LRFD comparing with the result of ASD, and those results quite dependent on the applied load and member classification.

The widened Seoul-Bridge is the first continuous 8-span prestressed concrete(PSC) girder bridge in domain. The construction sequence of the bridge consists of S steps in a large way. The measuring in construction stage includes the determination of the allowable fluctuation value of beam stress in each step and the measurement beam stress during prestessing. The measured tendon prestress force was compared with the design value. When it was compared with the analytic result, the difference between the measured stress and the analytic stress was below allowable error. The friction loss and the anchorage slip loss of the tendon prestress force was lower than the design loss value.

This paper presents the consideration of design guideline for underground HCS system, composite spancrete slab, under axial and bending force. Serviceability design requirements for continuous composite spancrete slab subjected axial force, which are allowable stress and deflection, are compared. Flexural strengths are evaluated by design guideline using strain-compatibility method. The results showed that stresses of spancrete and topping concrete, especially at the ends of beam, have much effect on design loads. Maximum service loads for tested specimens are proposed by allowable stress.

Until now, there are different kinds of design and evaluation method criteria for ship hulls and ship strength based on allowable stress design using past experiences. But for many sinking accidents of large ships in operation, it has also a doubt about allowable stress design. It is recognized that structural plastic collapse caused by large external force is a main cause of that accidents. Therefore, there is the need for new design criteria based on ultimate limit state with a consideration about progressive collapse behavior as a safety assessment of ship hulls. Also many aluminum alloy ships is built for the purposes of lightweight of ship hulls, with that, a developing of criteria based on ultimate limit state should be made. In this study, the ultimate strength characteristics of aluminum ship hull are investigated by the ALPS/USAS program using already developed design formula for aluminum plate and stiffened panel.
Pipe means the connection of the tube in order to transfer fluid from one device to another device. The piping stress analysis is to analyze the structural stability considering the location and the features of piping support after completing the piping design, The allowable stresses comply with the requirements of the relevant standards by examining whether the support of the function and location of pipe or re-operation is confirmed. Allowable stresses are to make sure that the maximum stress should not exceed the allowable stress presented in the ASME B31.1 POWER PIPING code. ASME B31.1 POWER PIPING code ensures a smooth stress analysis can be performed during the initial pipe stress analysis as provided in the case of straight pipe to the horizontal distance between the supports. However, because there is no criteria set in the case of curved pipe, the optimum pipe supporting points were studied in this paper. As mentioned about the curved pipe, loads applied to the support of the position of 17% and 83% of the position relative to the elbow part have results similar to the load acting on the support of straight pipe.
Shrink-rings (Stress-rings) are used in the fabrication of powder compaction dies to increase the allowable compaction pressures for a given die material. Optimum Procedures are used to insure that the stress distributions in the die and stress-rings ultilize fully the strength available in each of the die elements. Two criteria for the optimum die design are used: Maximum shear stress limit for one-piece dies and zero tensile stress limit for combined dies. Examples for each case are presented in this paper.

Before making a prototype, we predicted the inlet/outlet differential pressure and flow coefficient, which are the most basic design data for the valve through the design and numerical analysis of the trim, which is the most important in the localization development of the 1500Ib high differential pressure control valve used for boiler feed water. As a result, the design value and the analysis value were found to be about 98% similar. The flow field within the fluid velocity of 23m/s to prevent cavitation was also found. The result of the numerical analysis on thermal stress due to the characteristics of valves exposed to high temperatures showed that it was found to be about 18% less than the allowable stress of the bolt fixing the trim. When all loads such as pressure, self-weight, and vibration are applied, however, it is judged to go beyond the currently calculated thermal stress, exceeding the allowable stress.

Optimum design of movable hydraulic crane's booms for weight reduction was performed in this study. Since the boom weight of the present used booms is very heavy, it is needed to make them lighter structure as possible as we can. Optimum design was performed for the booms by changing from the hexagonal cross section to triangular truss structure under the conditions, which are the allowable stress for the present cross section must be maintained, and the optimized weight must be minimized. CATIAV5 was used for stress analysis and design variables were established as the height and width of the triangular truss structure. As the results, it is found that the height of the truss structure is increased in proportion to the height of the booms and the maximum stress for optimal truss structure was obtained as 412MPa, which is lower than the allowable stress for the present hexagonal cross section. The optimized weight of the booms is reduced to about 19.88% comparing to the original weight.

When designing fixed jacket structures, overseas design standards are applied due to the absence of domestic design methods. Although the US API standards are mainly applied, API RP 2A suggests two design methods: the allowable stress design method (WSD) and the load resistance coefficient method (LRFD), and is applied according to the designer's judgment. In this study, the stress ratio of the two design methods was reviewed and compared using SACS, an analysis program dedicated to marine structures, for fixed marine structures actually installed on the domestic coast. As a result of the review, it was found that the LRFD design method showed a greater stress ratio for extreme load analysis and transportation analysis, and the WSD design method showed a greater stress ratio for loading and lifting. Therefore, when applying the design method, it is considered appropriate to select the final design method considering safety and economic feasibility after conducting an applicability review for the two design methods.

The optimal design for the shape of MIL-S-46119 ring obturator under the high pressure using parameter stud:』 on the stress analysis considering effects of design variable is presented, and it is compared to experimental results. The trends of parametric study are in good agreement with the experimental results. The more thickness the higher stress. The more taper the higher stress. And maximum stress of circumferential surface is larger than maximum stress of forward surface. The design variable!; are such as thickness, taper, radius of shape of the obturator. In order to optimize the shape of obturation ring, the weight is maximized subject to maximum stress of the obturator within allowable stress. The design constraints are geometric elements of design variables.
